KATIE TAYLOR AND AMANDA SERRANO TO MEET IN HISTORIC BOXING CLASH ON APRIL 30

Pound-for-pound stars are first ever female fighters to headline an MSG event in the iconic venue’s 140 years of boxing history

Taylor and Serrano will come face-to-face for the first time next Wednesday, February 2 live from NYC.

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are set to make history in an epic battle for Taylor’s undisputed Lightweight title at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday April 30, live worldwide on DAZN.

TO SIGN UP TO THE EXCLUSIVE PRESALE, VISIT MSG.COM/TAYLORSERRANO
Presale begins at 12noon ET on Thursday February 3, with tickets on general sale at 12noon ET on Friday February 4 – tickets start at $56 (plus fees)

Years in the making, the biggest fight ever in women’s boxing between the pound-for-pound #1 and #2 fighters of the world is one that will not only make boxing history, but women’s sports history. MSG has hosted thousands of fights through its illustrious years, beginning more than a century ago on July 17, 1882; now, 140 years later, this matchup finally marks the very first time two female fighters are headlining a combat sports event at “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”

Irish icon Taylor (20-0 6 KOs) puts all the Lightweight belts on the line for the sixth time since winning them in June 2019 in a war with Delfine Persoon and seeing off the Belgian in a rematch in England before repelling the challenges of Miriam Gutierrez, Natasha Jonas, Jennifer Han and Firuza Sharipova – and there’s added spice to the fight as Taylor holds a win over Amanda’s sister Cindy in Boston back in October 2018.

Puerto Rican sensation Serrano (42-1-1 30 KOs) already has an unrivalled legacy in the sport as a seven-weight World champion. The Brooklyn based champion enters the momentous bout in sparkling form after knocking out Daniela Bermudez last March, dominating Yamileth Mercado in August and overpowering Miriam Gutierrez in two separate cards co-starring Jake Paul. Amanda was the 2021 Female Fighter of the Year for DAZN, ESPN and WBC among others.

“This is a fight I've wanted for a long, long time and I'm just excited for it to finally take place because these are the kind of fights I'm in the sport for,” said Taylor. “People have been talking about this fight for years and there have been times I wondered if it was ever going to happen so I'm very grateful to Eddie Hearn, everyone at Matchroom, DAZN and Madison Square Garden for getting it over the line.

“When I turned professional my goal was to be involved in huge events like this so to headline at Madison Square Garden in a fight of this magnitude is really the pinnacle of the sport. It's such an iconic venue and has been home to so many of the historic moments in boxing and I truly believe this will be another one.”

“It is a dream come true to have the opportunity to headline Madison Square Garden and do so against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Katie Taylor,” said Serrano. “Since I was a young girl, my only boyfriend has been boxing. I have dedicated my life to him, and this event makes that commitment worth every minute. On April 30th I am going to make history for me, for my team, for my family, for Puerto Rico, for every Latina and Latino and for all women worldwide.”

From the moment Katie Taylor stepped into my office, this is the moment we always dreamed of,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “The moment the world would stop and watch and watch the two greatest female fighters on the planet headline at the Mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden.

“Taylor vs. Serrano is a fight for the history books. Yes, it’s the by far the biggest female fight of all time but it’s also one of the biggest fights of all time, the undisputed World and Olympic champion against the seven division World champion.

“Both fighters deserve credit for getting this fight made, as does Jake Paul and his team at Most Valuable Promotions, DAZN and Madison Square Garden - together we’re going to put on a special night in New York and create a fitting spectacle for these trailblazers to shine.”

“We are honored to be a part of this historic event, headlined by two historically dominant women. Bringing attention to women’s boxing has been a priority for us and Saturday April 30th is a major milestone for not just the sport but girls globally who deserve equal opportunity," said Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, Co-Founders of Most Valuable Promotions. “We expect a battle for the ages and have the utmost respect and admiration for Katie Taylor. But make no mistake, we are standing next to Amanda Serrano and know she will prove to the world that she is the pound-for-pound greatest female boxer to ever enter the ring. This is more than a fight, this is for forever.”

“This is without question the biggest fight ever in women’s boxing,” said Ed Breeze, DAZN EVP, Rights. “Katie Taylor is a trailblazer in the sport, with a perfect amateur record and pivotal in catapulting women’s boxing into the mainstream. Serrano is a true legend and will be Taylor’s toughest test to date. This fight will be spectacular and also one for the history books, and we’re thrilled to deliver this exciting moment in boxing and sports history to DAZN subscribers across the world.”

As the first ever women to headline at Madison Square Garden, Taylor and Serrano will come face-to-face in the Big Apple on the first leg of a global press tour next Wednesday, February 2 – timed in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a day of observance in the U.S. acknowledging the accomplishments of female athletes and recognizing the importance of equal opportunities in sport for girls and women. Billie Jean King - tennis icon, equality champion, and Women’s Sports Foundation founder - is delighted that the fight will take center stage at the legendary arena.

“The Taylor vs. Serrano fight at Madison Square Garden is historic and it is only fitting it is being held in the venue that has hosted so many important championships in sports,” said King. “These two women are breaking barriers and opening doors for others by being the main event and not the undercard, fighting for one of the biggest paydays in boxing and showing everyone that if you can see it, you can be it.”

“Saturday, April 30 will be another historic night of boxing at Madison Square Garden,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, MSG Marquee Events. “The Garden has been home to some of the most iconic events in the history of boxing, and Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor will usher in another legendary night, becoming the first women to headline a show at the ‘Mecca of Boxing’. We wish them both good luck and congratulate them on this groundbreaking achievement.”

Details around the London press conference early February will be released in due course. Additionally, there will be more information released soon around the fight not only being available worldwide on DAZN, but also through select cable & satellite pay-per-view providers in the U.S.

MARTINEZ: I HAVE TO MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME
WBC Flyweight king back in action on Saturday
Julio Cesar Martinez says he’s eager to make up for lost time as he prepares to defend his WBC World Flyweight title against Joel Cordova in the headline fight of the opening event of Matchroom and DAZN’s new series of fight nights in Mexico with Canelo Promotions and Clase y Talento on Saturday night at the Dome Alcalde – CODE Jalisco in Guadalajara, live worldwide on DAZN.

TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW FROM M$150

Martinez’s (17-1 13 KOs) reign as champion has been blighted by injury since landing the green and gold strap in December 2019, ruling him out of two defenses against McWilliams Arroyo in Tulsa, Oklahoma last summer and in Miami, Florida in February.

When the 26 year old does put his belt on the line, he does so in exciting fashion, with impressive wins over Cristofer Rosales, Jay Harris and Moises Calleros Garcia to date, but having been unable to face Arroyo and move onto the unification fights he desires, ‘El Rey’ feels that Saturday night’s all-Mexican clash is an important moment to show that he’s the top dog at 112lbs.

“I am happy and excited to be back in the ring and have the chance to make up for lost time,” said Martinez. “It’s already been more than four months without a fight. I am so disappointed that two fights fell through but here’s hoping to return as I’ve always said, with everything except fear, and to always leave everything on the ring.

“It was the hand thing. I was boxing with super tough guys and in one clash, all good clashes by the way, I hit a guy in the head and my metacarpal swelled. I was going to move forward, but Mr. Eddy Reynoso and Mr. Mauricio Sulaimán saw the lesion and thought it was too swollen, so they opted to take care of me and not let me fight.

“Now I am happy but at the same time sad as I had great opportunities and because there you can see the support and thank God, I was given all the support by Mr. Sulaimán, Mr. Eddie Hearn, and Mr. Reynoso.

“We know Cordova and he knows it. It’s going to be a very good fight. I have boxed with him before. At one time, we sparred with him. We did a collaboration for el Gallito, sparring as part of an exhibition. The guy has a lot of heart, he also likes to go forward and I feel that a fight with a lot of action is going to be very good. And as always, let the best man win.

“As always, to do what I know, what I have trained for with my coach Mauricio Aceves. Attack, not get too crazy, take care of myself and move forward, throw out my combinations. We are ready for the twelve rounds or, God willing, the fight reaches a knockout.”

Martinez’s clash with Cordova is is part of a stacked card in Guadalajara, with Cuba’s Daniel Matellon (11-0-2 6 KOs) making the first defends of his interim WBA World Light-Flyweight title against Jose Argumedo (24-4-1 15 KOs).

There is a 12th pro-outing for rising Mexican-American starlet Diego Pacheco (11-0 8 KOs), Gabriel Valenzuela (23-2-1 13 KOs) looks to build on his impressive win in London, England over Robbie Davies Jr in February against Juan Ocura (14-14-1 6 KOs), Christian Alan Gomez Duran (20-2-1 18 KOs) features on the card having recorded stoppage wins on two Canelo cards in December and May against unbeaten Jorge Sanchez (13-0 5 KOs).

Lightweight and Super-Lightweight
Undefeated Northampton star Chantelle Cameron has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

Cameron (12-0, 7 KOs) finds herself on the cusp of World Title action after winning WBC Final Eliminators in two separate divisions last year, securing her spot as Mandatory Challenger to Undisputed Lightweight Queen Katie Taylor and Super-Lightweight ruler Jessica McCaskill.

Trained by Jamie Moore at the VIP Gym in Asltey and managed by MTK Global, 29-year-old Cameron says a huge showdown with her idol Taylor is at the top of her wish list but she won’t put her career on hold waiting for it and is already targeting other opportunities.

“Matchroom and Sky are a huge platform,” said Cameron. “It’s always been in my sights and I’ve not had the chance until now to link-up, I can’t wait to get going. Day by day under Jamie and Nigel I’m improving but I’m still not the finished article. This time has allowed me to work in different areas I probably wouldn’t have focused on in proper training camp.

“I wasn’t expecting to become mandatory in two weights, it was a bit of a shock but I’m delighted with MTK and Jamie since we’ve all come together. The last two fights have been great matchmaking and now a World Title shot is not too far away either at Lightweight or Super-Lightweight.

“Before my first pro fight people were asking me to fight Katie. I’m a massive fan, she’s a legend and I look up to her but at the same time I’m her Mandatory and I want that fight. That being said, I don’t want to be hanging around waiting - it could be years away, she has a fight lined up and is also talking about other fights.

“I want to win World Titles myself and can’t be sitting around waiting for that fight. As it stands, I’m not sure what the next move is given what’s happened with COVID-19 but I’ll be ready to go when the call comes. I’m looking to put on a good show for my Matchroom debut, first impressions last.”

"I'm delighted to welcome Chantelle Cameron to the team," said Eddie Hearn. "I've been watching her closely over the last couple of years and she's a huge talent - exciting, relentless and punches very hard. I believe she is going to go on and become a multi-weight World Champion.

"Her next fight will be for a World Title and we'll announce it in the next couple of weeks. Women's boxing is on fire right now and I'm so excited to be a part of it and deliver huge nights on sky sports and DAZN."

Prelims will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT on FS1, ESPNEWS and in Spanish on FOX Deportes and ESPN3. ESPNEWS' coverage will switch to ESPN at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

These fights will be available on the FOX Sports App and ESPN App beginning at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday from the Media Center at MGM Grand:

CHARLES MARTIN

"I can't wait for this. I'm not letting anything get to me, I'm just here to work. I grew up and I am more mature. I am ready to take on the heavyweight division. My prediction is that I'm going to stop him in four."

"This is going to get me in another good spot and it'll put me on the way to get my heavyweight title back. This fight is coming at a great time in my career and I feel ready for Saturday."

"It's a blessing to be in this position. My whole family is going to show up and we're all excited. My cousin is even going to walk me out to the ring. We're excited to be a part of this big card."

"Me and Washington sparred a while back, but you have to remember that some people are gym fighters and some perform when the lights are bright. Personally, my sparring has nothing to do with how I perform when it's go time."

"I'm a heavyweight and we come to deliver knockouts. That's all I know how to do. Knockout in four. That's what's happening Saturday night."

GERALD WASHINGTON

"I'm very excited. We put together a great training camp, I went around the world. I went to London to work with Derek Chisora, and I went to Saudi Arabia and worked with Andy Ruiz. I brought a great team together and we are just ready to go to work."

"I was able to turn myself into Gerald Washington 2.0. I have always had the physical part down, I always work hard and train well, but it is the mental side that you need to put together to be a complete fighter and that is where I am at now. I have a great group of people around me.

"Those who know boxing, know that it's hard, and everyone goes through their own demons. I took a loss and it didn't go my way, but to be able to pick yourself up and keep going, you build that strength. You become a new person and I'm carrying all that with me. I know what that loss felt like and I'm on a personal mission for me to complete my goals."

"We are locked in mentally. I did everything to prepare myself for this fight, we are in great shape physically and mentally."

I know Martin well, and he's a hard-working fighter. We will be cool before the fight and we will be cool after, but we are fighting for a title eliminator and we both want the same thing."

"It is going to be a good, tough fight. He is going to be tough and it is going to be an exciting fight."

EMANUEL NAVARRETE

"I always say yes to a fight. Even though I've been fighting quickly fight after fight, I have always come out with good health. That makes me ready for the next fight that comes up."

"I think my next fight will depend on Saturday's results. I do think it is more convenient and realistic to move up in weight than to wait for a unification fight."

"Preparation for this fight has been excellent. This is another great opportunity that has been given to me and I will demonstrate once again that I'm the best at 122-pounds"

"I'm going for another knockout victory and after that I would like to unify. If that doesn't happen, I'll probably move up to challenge the champions at featherweight. I want to be a global superstar for the sport of boxing and I'm well on my way"

"i draw inspiration from the other iconic fights between Mexican and Filipino fighters that have taken place right here, especially Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. It's going to help me put on another good performance on Saturday."

JEO SANTISIMA

"I'm very excited and I had a really good camp. We're ready to put together a great performance and achieve my dream of winning a world title."

"I'm going to be like Manny Pacquiao and win a world title in my first fight in the U.S. Achieving that is a huge motivation for me. It's an opportunity I'm going to take advantage of."

SEBASTIAN FUNDORA

"I walk around at this weight. I came to Las Vegas at 157 pounds. I don't know exactly how it's so easy, but I make the weight easily and I'm going to be in this division for a while."

"We have different strategies for different fights. Whatever the fight presents and whatever my opponent brings, we'll be ready."

"I believe this fight is going to be very entertaining. I'm coming for the knockout. Expect a great fight with exciting action. We won't disappoint."

"I'm excited to be on a card like this. It's another great step for me, with a real challenge against a good undefeated fighter. I'm going to bring the fight to him."

DANIEL LEWIS

"We're just ready to fight. We will fight them all, and we will fight the best. We fought in Los Angeles in November, got the win there, and now we have another opportunity to get a good win. That's what we are going to do."

"Working with Terence Crawford was another great opportunity that we took on. Getting into camp with him was amazing. He has such high spirits and is so fast, he is hard to hit. It was a great experience early in my career."

"I'm very grateful for such a big opportunity. We're here to make this a great fight and put on a good show for everyone watching."

SUBRIEL MATIAS

"I'm very thankful for this opportunity. My team has gotten me in great condition and worked with me every day in camp so that I'm ready for Saturday night."

"I'm very excited to be in this position. I promise you that you will not regret watching this fight. We're going to bring action."

"To my opponent, thank you for taking this fight. I'm here to realize my dream with a win on Saturday and I'm not letting anyone stand in my way."

"I'm not worried about what's in store after this fight. I'm just focused on Saturday night. I'll leave the rest to my team, but I'm definitely putting the whole 140-pound division on notice."

PETROS ANANYAN

"I know my opponent has a powerful punch, but I've worked very hard to accomplish my dream. This is very important for me.

"I've had great sparring and I'm ready for anything that could happen in the ring. I thought I should have gotten the decision in my last fight, but Saturday I will be able to start a new winning streak."

AMIR IMAM

"This will put me high up in the rankings, so I am looking forward to putting on a great show and displaying my talents"

"The chemistry with my team is great. We have fun, but we work really hard. I want to thank my manager for putting me in a great position, and I am ready to put on a show."

"Molina is just as tall as me, he's just as quick as me, but I think I have more experience than him due to the title fight. Skill-wise I believe I am just better than him as well."

"I know I have power, but I'm not depending on that. I am going out to perform my best and win any way I can, whether that be a decision or a knockout."

"It's a blessing to be in this position, and I plan to take advantage of every opportunity that's put in front of me."

JAVIER MOLINA

"I feel like I have to make a statement in this fight. Just a little over a year ago I was struggling to even get a fight. I've been active since then, so I think this fight is happening at the perfect time for me."

"Imam is a tough fighter and a win gets me that much closer to a title. We're prepared and ready for anything he brings to the ring."

"I'm glad to be in this position. I didn't think it would take this long, but we're here now. I'm going to take full advantage of this opportunity in front of a lot of eyeballs."

ROLANDO ROMERO

"I'm going to get another first round knockout Saturday night. If you know me, you know that when I say I'm going to do something, it's going to happen."

"One punch is all it takes for me. I believe I'm one of the hardest punchers in boxing and the hardest puncher under 147-pounds. There's no doubt about it, I'm getting a first round knockout Saturday."

GABRIEL FLORES JR.

"I try to get better and better each performance. That's how I learn from my mistakes. I want to put on a great performance Saturday night."

"Back in 2013 I lost my mom, and that was tough. It was someone I was used to seeing every day. Once I heard about Kobe Bryant, I could only think about the rest of his family. I know part of that pain. For me, this fight is for everyone who's ever felt that pain."

VITO MIELNICKI JR.

"I'm balancing training and school, but I want to graduate to six-round fights and show I'm more than just a 17- year old prospect. I'm here to stay."

"Being on this stage motivates me, because one day I want my face to be on all the posters and art all over MGM Grand. I'm really motivated to keep working hard and get the job done each and every time out."

ISAAC LOWE

"I have a good opponent who's only been beaten by the best. He's fought world champions and quality fighters, so this is a big step up for me. If I win and put on a good display, it's going to put me right in the mix with the top fighters.

"You're going to see on Saturday night that 2020 is my year. I've got a worthy opponent who's going to come to win. So I'm ready and I can't wait to show the world that I'm a world level fighter."

So, what exactly does it mean to be “in shape” or “fit”? Well, that largely depends on who you ask. Fitness is an abstract concept. There is no universally accepted classification or set of criteria for what it means to be fit. There are many different ways fitness can be interpreted and approached. One individual might believe that a fit person should be able to run a mile without stopping. Yet another person might think that being fit is simply a matter of not being overweight.

In reality, fitness is more like a spectrum. A person who has just enough endurance to walk out to the mailbox is on the far left side of the spectrum. Professional and Olympic athletes are on the far right side. For most people, the goal is to be somewhere in between these two extremes. In order to set and achieve goals, you’ll have to gauge where on this spectrum you currently are and where you want to be.

There are multiple ways to assess physical fitness. Some of the most common criteria include cardiovascular endurance, stamina, mobility, agility, strength and balance. Other physical factors like body mass index (BMI) also come into play. However, BMI alone is not necessarily a good indicator of personal fitness. One person could have an average BMI, but also have poor cardiovascular health. Another person might have a higher than average BMI, but also be very strong and robust. With all this in mind, where should you even begin?

“Ever since the last event, people have been sliding into my DMs from all around the world to make this fight so hopefully now I will get some rest at Christmas!
