Be weather aware.

After some non-severe showers and thunder this morning, a couple chances for some strong to severe storms follow. The first of which will be later tonight as storms move out of Nebraska and South Dakota. While storms are largely expected to be strongest west of the area, a few may still be capable of damaging winds and hail. Tuesday will see another, better, opportunity for strong to severe storms with much of the area either under a Slight or Enhanced risk. All modes of severe weather, damaging winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes, appear possible during the afternoon into evening hours. Please stay on top of forecasts the next couple of days as details may change.

More possible rain in our future.

In addition to severe weather chances early this week, storms are primed to be efficient rainfall producers. Pictured is the Excessive Rainfall Outlook for Monday (left) and Tuesday (right) where portions of the state could see primarily localized water impacts in urban areas, especially for portions of northern Iowa who have received the most rainfall. Some rises in river and streams are possible, but not at the magnitude recently experienced in northwest Iowa. Additional rainfall is Possible Thursday.

Be weather aware.

While morning showers and storms will be non-severe, there will be an opportunity for a few strong to severe storms later this afternoon and evening. The primary risks with the afternoon and evening storms will be for damaging winds and large hail. Heavy rainfall amounts up to around 2 inches may be experienced, and a tornado or two cannot be explicitly ruled out.

Weather Update June 25, 2024 2:52pm.

Initial scattered thunderstorm development is expected late this afternoon into early evening (~4-6p), with storm coverage increasing towards 7-8p through central Iowa. Storms persist into tonight, mainly over the southern two thirds of Iowa, with additional development possible overnight. The primary severe weather threats will be damaging wind gusts and large hail with initial storms, with damaging wind gusts also possible in the secondary round overnight. Locally heavy rainfall may also occur. Stay weather aware this afternoon and evening!

Information on flooding

Please help us with rumor control! We are hearing rumors that the dam issues in the Mankato MN area and the levee failure in western Iowa this morning will affect central Iowa rivers. That is NOT the case! In both cases the affected rivers drain away from central Iowa. This map shows the Minnesota River basin (to which the Blue Earth River and Rapidian Dam near Mankato belong). As you can see, the Blue Earth River basin starts in far northern Iowa and drains north towards Mankato, away from Iowa. It eventually drains in to the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities.
