11 things I've learned over the last 10 years in the Network Marketing Industry:
1. Everything you need to know to grow a business here is a skill & all skills can be learned. Can prior skills and experience give you a leg up? Sure. But can the average person enter this business and win? ABSOLUTELY. Those willing to learn will have what it takes to be leaders.
2. You can read every book, listen to every podcast, and know a lot about the products, but if you don't put it into actionable, income producing activities, your knowledge will never convert to commissions. This is where the learners turn into leaders both in sales and in recruiting.
3. Cold messaging isn't necessary. People will probably come out of the woodwork at me for this one, but there is zero reason to message someone you know nothing about. The chances of that message converting are slim to none. If the first message/the first day of interaction with someone on the internet is to invite them to your business, that's spammy-pammy and you're giving us all the ick. Imagine if CVS just got your email or in your DMs and just started sending unsolicited marketing. Weird.
4. People leave network marketing businesses to join other ones just like people leave any place of employment or contracted agreement for another. There is no tea. People leave jobs they like for jobs they love often. Businesses change and some businesses downsize or close. Judging someone for switching a business or company makes no sense.
5. Network Marketing businesses will foster some of the greatest friendships and network connections of your life. Period.
6. Self Respect > Brand Loyalty is one of the toughest lines for folks to toe. When you are building a business, you want to love the products, what the company stands for, but this is business. You need to prioritize what it can do for you and/or your family. As soon as you prioritize the brand or company over your or your teams ability to promote or succeed in that business, that is disrespectful.
7. Numbers and ratings in network marketing are a lot like standardized testings in public schools...they aren't good measures of success. If you see folks throwing around numbers of what people ACTUALLY make in network marketing and they throw out national averages, this is why they're wrong. A HUGE percentage of network marketing links are operated for personal discounts only - think of it like the Costco membership of whatever product that company sells. They aren't growing a sales team and they likely will never share that link...ever. Also, as one of the most accessible online employment opportunities, you'll get folks that sign up, dabble (maybe), and then decide the business isn't for them. No harm no foul, but those numbers (or lack there of) are included in the metric. If you are researching a company, look carefully at the commissions paid out immediately and look at the top income earners list, maybe even a top leader in your area. Look for someone who is currently leading a sales operation about the size you envision leading and ask them the real questions.
8. We all start somewhere. You will never be great at something if you aren't okay with sucking at it in the beginning. Do you see the difference in those two videos? WHOA...and that's not even from the very beginning of my time in the industry, but believe it or not videos were just getting introduced to the platform and limited in quality and length and lives were certainly not a thing. Do what you can how you can.
9. Find your tribe before you find your team. Lock arms with people who have similar goals, drive, and perspective. When you have created those network and collaborative groups, create a shared space where you can all add your new sales organization adds. No one is ever alone, and your new teammates will feel like they are jumping into an existing collaboration (which they are).
10. This business might not be the right fit for everyone, but it was the right fit or me as a young wife navigating infertility, as a new mom on maternity leave, as a full-time teacher looking for extra money without extra time, during an out of state move, as a realtor & budding entrepreneur, during a cross country move, now while I'm settling into a new state, even when I SWITCHED COMPANIES. I couldn't have done most part time jobs during those seasons, but I was able to earn a desired extra income and trips during all of those seasons.
11. Lastly, the right mentor matters. You need to lock arms with people that have the same vision and the same desires as you. When you've locked arms with people who are talking about dreams instead of drama, you'll see this industry in a whole new light.
This is absolutely a vehicle that can get you to a life you don't need a vacation from.
