off the clock: MARTIN PARREÑO

one of many talented bartenders at , a LATINO cocktail bar in . known for their clarification drinks and good vibes, you might wonder what MARTIN does on his days off. all I know: he went in for a crossfit session in the morning, and met up with me () in the PM. and off to eating we went! i couldn't recognize him at first sight, due to his amazing fashion sense and the fact that he was not wearing the famous fit. one thing that was recognizable was his smile! dude can light up a room. started at since MARTIN is an avid lover of burgers. we had a great convo about life, the creatives, the city of , and how grateful he is to be alive! we stopped by for a solid pint of ! and finished the evening listening to the SMASHING PUMPKINS. the only photos i was able to get was outside in the cold. anyways, that's what we did. that's OFF THE CLOCK for you.

grab a seat and hang out for 10 minutes // walking around the SARI-SARI event and tasting a lot of good food. prolly the opposite of what people are doing right now with the NEW YEAR + DRY JANUARY. people gotta eat! SARI-SARI is what i called TIANGGE (chang-gee) where i grew up in the PHILIPPINES (ILOILO CITY). it's a small market / store in a neighborhood. often attached to someone's home. love this event! we got lost eating + .and.46 + ! one thing is for sure, it’s hard to describe food when it tastes that goooood! with the long year ahead, the soshelMAG team is on a mission to try and share experiences thru food + people. i’m talking about, going over to people’s houses to try recipes. making it happen! we really hope you enjoy this and can’t wait to share more experiences with all of our friends!

back at it from the SARISARI event // as mentioned here is the food portion, coming right up! first off, when TAHO is present you must indulge and enjoy a cup of deliciousness. big shout out to for sharing an authentic cup of TAHO. just the perfect mix of sweetness with the sago pearls! too good to pass up!

my favorite filipino food in all of DC and DMV comes from this truck! .and.46! every item on the menu hits all the taste buds in my mouth. the dishes have so much love put into them. it brings me back home to when little 8 yr. old was eating at the kitchen table with LOLA LUCIA sharing her lumpia + rice, with the sweet chili sauce on the side. that’s love right there ha! my favorite is the sisig over white rice. and dammit that rice is perfect. ELAINE is the rice master!!

the recap:
tuna tartare nachos with the wonton chips ——> deliciousness. if you are eating with friends, your eyes will expand in wow-ness. you will look at each other, and nod your head in silence. you’ll prolly do weird things out of joy from the taste.
arroz caldo with chicken ——> game over. tingles. great on a rainy/cold day
lumpia ——> reminds me of my Lola’s food (grandma)
ELAINE + VANESSA ——> all the vibes with the positive energy! superblast!

this wasn’t meant to be a food review, but I guess it kinda turned into one! Let’s talk about . cannot get enough! my fav is non-other than the O.G. it has the smoked kimchi, the SPAM, special salted nori, micro greens, house furikake, and lastly that amazing sticky rice that has the perfect crunch. i’m a sucka for rice! first time i bit into this thing, didn’t know what to expect. but when i did, all these flavors came together and it was fireworks. i feel if you ever want to impress anyone, showing up with stacks of O.G.’s will surely do it. let me know if it works.

the OG ——> bonkers, mouth watering. must get at least TWO. eat the first one really fast coz it’s so good and savor the second one.

the SARI SARI pop up at was super fun! the filipino / asian community showed up sharing culture, a little bit of authentic food, and goods! i literally come here to enjoy good music and EAT! food so good i'm going to have to make another post showing all the food from my favorite filipino place, starts with 'KAM' and ends with 'and 46' coming soon! but let's talk about this event for second. earlier in the year of 2023 i didn't even know these events existed. it wasn't until i actually went to a filipino restaurant and made friends with a whole lot of filipinos hahah! they started inviting me to these awesome festivals and spots to grab food. then i bumped into my friend Les, who i didn't know at the time, at one of their events and i knew this was the place to be and people to hang with! it's a hidden gem and definitely you got to experience! ok, food post will be next!

hey! what can i say? // literally ringing in the bell for the NEW YEAR! if you don't kno me, i'm BRYAN ABDALLAH! i have a lot of nicknames but most recently people call me SOSHEL. i have never felt this excited about soshelMAG ever! this is an extension of me and my life as i wander to who knows where and what. i just want to share my experiences, things, art, music, anything and everything that is with incredible people. this has been my vision for a very long time and bringing this to life. who knows how this is going to unfold, but im here for it. like really here for it. 😀

being soshel // when i hear soshel it's a word that is in my head without a definitive meaning in a dictionary. i say "be soshel" a lot to myself when something seems hard to accomplish, everything has been done before. and for me it means to create unrealistic goals, do things that surprise myself, challenge myself to do anything i want to achieve, meet people and learn things. get lost and follow my intuition. not settle. and bring people up with me, because why not?

im also very grateful for every person i have spent a lot of time with this year. it's a blessing to have a meal with you and have deep convos. can't wait to keep growing the mind, and soul! life is a blessing.

and if you are still reading this ... yes i love lowercase letters and love capitalizing every letter in someone's name or place. much love. BE SOSHEL.
