40 years ago, on 25 June 1984, David Sylvian's first solo album Brilliant Trees was released. I purchased it on vinyl upon release, but it was also the first CD I was given with my first CD player the following year. Sylvian has been a favourite artist for decades now, creating an amazing body of work individually and collaboratively, and has been featured regularly on Lucky Flux.

Sad news on the passing of David Sanborn. Aside from his many wonderful playing credits, Sanborn hosted one of the best music programmes to ever grace network television, Night Music. It only aired for two seasons (1988 - 1990), but it brought together an eclectic and unique combination of jazz and other artists.

I include this clip because it represents the type of unusual ensemble that would come together on Night Music - Philip Glass, Debbie Harry, Loudon Wainwright III, and Pere Ubu, alongside the stellar house band.

The latest Lucky Flux show has been added to the archive. This playlist was chosen by the Fluxomat, which looked through all the 200+ playlists and came up with, among other things, a set that includes Bette Midler, Björk, and Elton John... that seems just about eclectic enough to represent the show! Lots of other great music from the Stylistics, O'Jays, JJ Cale, Juluka, King Sunny Ade, Rachel Walker, Zero 7, French 79, Owensie, and a wonderful closing track from Lucy Rose. Enjoy!

In looking back on the four years of Lucky Flux it is hard not to note impact of the Covid pandemic. The latest addition to the Lucky Flux archive is an homage to the series of shelter-in-place shows that were broadcast back in the Spring of 2020, with some tracks drawn from those episodes, and some other tracks added to that mix. You'll hear music from Depeche Mode, Angelique Kidjo, Chuck Berry, The Buzzcocks, David Grahame, The Talking Heads, Rupert Hine, Donald Fagen, Gilbert O'Sullivan, and many more. Also, the special Mr. Lucky mash-up of the Stanford Band and Madness performing Our House! Take a listen, you won't actually need a mask.
