_“We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard. ”_

*A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles 4: 13-21*

In those days: When the rulers and elders and Scribes saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they wondered; and they recognised that they had been with Jesus. But seeing the man that had been healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is manifest to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to any one in this name.” So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the Name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.” And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people; for all men praised God for what had happened.

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps. 118: 1 &14-15ab, 15c-18, 19-21*

_R/. *I will thank you, Lord, for you have answered me.*_

Give praise to the Lord, for He is good; His mercy endures forever. The Lord is my strength and my song; he was my Saviour. There are shouts of joy and salvation in the tents of the just.

_R/. *I will thank you, Lord, for you have answered me.*_

“The Lord’s right hand has done mighty deeds; His right hand is exalted. The Lord’s Right hand has done mighty deeds.” I shall not die, I shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord punished me, punished me severely, but did not hand me over to death.

_R/. *I will thank you, Lord, for you have answered me.*_

Open to me the gates of justice: I will enter and thank the Lord. This is the Lord’s own gate, where the just enter. I will thank you, for you have answered, and you are my Saviour.

_“Go into all the world and preach the Gospel. ”_

*A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark 16: 9-15*

When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. After this He appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them. Afterwards He appeared to the Eleven themselves as they sat at table; and He upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen. And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to the whole creation.”

*REFLECTION ON TODAY'S WORD OF GOD*

_Theme: *The Beauty of Repentance.*_

The first person recorded in Scripture to whom Jesus appeared was Mary Magdalene after His Resurrection. Notably, she was the one out of whom Jesus cast seven demons. Being possessed by seven demons has traditionally been understood to mean that she was completely possessed. Prior to Jesus freeing her, satan and his demons had completely taken over her will by her free submission to evil. And yet, it was to her, a woman with such a horrible past, that Jesus chose to give the honour of His first appearance. What an amazing fact!

Everyone has a past. Some have been grave sinners. Others, like Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, have never committed a mortal sin. Obviously, the beauty of a soul like Saint Thérèse is deeply admirable, and such a soul will be greatly rewarded in Heaven. But what about the grave sinner? What about those like Mary Magdalene who have lived horribly sinful lives? What does our Lord think about them?

The fact that Mary Magdalene is the first person recorded in Scripture to have seen the Risen Lord should tell us much about how Jesus views a person who has greatly struggled with serious sin but has later overcome that sin and turned wholeheartedly to our Lord. Sin is demoralizing. When unrepented, it leaves a loss of dignity and integrity. However, even after one has repented, some people will continue to struggle with unhealthy guilt and shame. And for some, these struggles can become a weapon by which the evil one tries to discourage them from feeling worthy to serve our Lord with zeal and passion.

But the truth in the mind of God is that repentant sinners are true jewels and beautiful in the eyes of our Lord. They are worthy of the greatest honours. God does not dwell on our past sin. Instead, our past sin, when it has been repented of and forgiven, will be an eternal sign of the love and mercy of God.

How do you deal with your past sin? First, have you completely acknowledged it, repented of it and sought forgiveness from our Lord? If so, does it still haunt you? Does the evil one still try to remind you of your past and strip away your hope in the mercy of God?

Reflect, today, upon the most grievous of your past sins. If you haven’t yet confessed them, then do so as soon as you can. If you have, try to see your soul through the eyes of God. God does not see your past sins with anger and disgust. Rather, He sees only the depth of your conversion, sorrow and repentance. And, to Him, this is holy and beautiful. Ponder the beauty of your repentant heart and know that, as you do, you will be looking at your own heart through the eyes of God.

_My most merciful God, You love the sinner and hate the sin. You love me in ways that are beyond my understanding. Help me to understand how deeply You love my heart when I completely repent. And help me to see my heart only through Your eyes. I thank You for Your love and mercy, dear Lord. Help me to love You all the more._

_“I give you what I have, in the name of Jesus, rise and walk ”_

*A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles 3: 1-10*

In those days: Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at that gate of the temple which is called Beautiful to ask alms of those who entered the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, with John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention upon them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but I give you what I have; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise and walk.” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and walked and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and recognised him as the one who sat for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

_They recognised Him in the breaking of the bread._

*A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 24: 13-35*

The first day of the week, two of the Disciples of Jesus were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognising Him. And He said to them, “What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleophas, answered Him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our Chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we had hoped that He was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find His body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of Angels, who said that He was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.” And He said to them, “O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the Prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is towards evening and the day is now far spent.” So He went in to stay with them. When He was at table with them, He took the bread and blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised Him; and He vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the Scriptures?” And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the Eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

*REFLECTION ON TODAY'S WORD OF GOD*

_Theme: *Stay with us Lord*_

The Emmaus episode, which is found only in Luke’s Gospel, describes how Jesus shared the sorrow and frustration of the Disciples at the sad and shameful death of their Master. Their hopes of Jesus’ conquest of the Romans and establishment of the glorious Davidic Kingdom with His Divine power had been shattered.

The Risen Lord, unrecognized, joined them as they walked along. He explained the Scriptures and reminded them of the prophecies about the Messiah’s death and Resurrection in order to show them how the events that had happened were the fulfillment of Messianic prophecies. But it was only at supper, when Jesus blessed and broke the bread and gave it to them, that they recognized Jesus, who promptly vanished from their sight.

The phrase, “the Breaking of the Bread”, is used repeatedly in the Acts of the Apostles also written by Luke, to refer to the ritual meal of the Christian community, the Eucharist (Acts 2:42, 46; 20:7; 27:35). Disciples in every century have continued to recognize Jesus in “the Breaking of the Bread.”

●The Risen Lord is with us in both the joyful and the sad moments of our lives. Too often, we have our hopes and dreams shattered by the untimely deaths of our dear ones, by a split in family relationships, by the worsening of our illnesses, or by the loss of jobs. On such occasions, we have to learn to experience the risen Lord’s consoling and supporting presence in our lives.

●As the Disciples met the risen Lord on their way to Emmaus, we too must recognize and appreciate His presence in the Holy Eucharist, in the Word of God, in the praying community, at home, and in our Churches. Jesus is still beside His followers. Often, He is only dimly recognized and only by few. “You were with me,” wrote St. Augustine some centuries later, “but I was not with You” (Confessions, X, 27). Let us learn to talk to Jesus whenever we are alone and listen to Him when we read the Bible, hear it preached or have it explained to us.

_My resurrected Lord, You appeared to these Disciples who lacked Faith and understanding and gave them the gift of Your holy teaching. Teach me, dear Lord, all that I must come to understand and know about You, Your death, Resurrection and glorious gift of new life. May Your Word burn within me and lead me to a transformation of my life._

_“I hid not my face from shame and spitting”_

*A Reading from the Book of Prophet Isaiah 50: 4-9a*

The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him that is weary. Morning by morning, He wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I hid not my face from shame and spitting. For the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been confounded; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me. Behold, the Lord God helps me; who will declare me guilty?

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps. 69: 8-10, 21-22, 31 & 33-34*

_R/. *In your great mercy, answer me, O God*_

For a time of your favour. It is for you that I suffer taunts, that shame has covered my face. To my own kin I have become an outcast, a stranger to the children of my mother. Zeal for your House consumes me, and taunts against you fall on me.

_R/. *In your great mercy, answer me, O God*_

Taunts have broken my heart; here I am in anguish. I looked for solace, but there was none; for consolers-not one could I find. For food they gave me gall; in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

_R/. *In your great mercy, answer me, O God*_

Then I will praise God’s name with a song; I will glorify Him with thanksgiving. The poor when they see it will be glad, and God-seeking hearts will revive; for the Lord listens to the needy, and does not spurn His own in their chains.

_“The Son of Man goes as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!”_

*A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 26: 14-25*

At that time: One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief Priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray Him.

Now, on the first day of Unleavened Bread, the Disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to such a one, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with my Disciples." And the Disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover. When it was evening, He sat at table with the Twelve Disciples; and as they were eating, He said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” And they were very sorrowful, and began to say to Him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me, will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” Judas, who betrayed Him, said, “Is it I, Master?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

*REFLECTION ON TODAY'S WORD OF GOD*

_Theme: *Money as a source of all evil*_

Today is traditionally known as “Spy Wednesday,” and was called by Christians as early as AD 250 the “the day of betrayal.” Today’s Gospel describes how Judas secretly planned to betray Jesus for thirty silver pieces (the price of a slave), and how he was seeking an opportunity to betray his Master.

We also learn how Jesus had His plans for celebrating His last Passover supper with His Disciples carried out in a house prearranged by Him.

In Jesus’ time, the Passover supper was celebrated on the first day of the week of Unleavened Bread. During the meal, Jesus dramatically declared that one of the Disciples was planning to betray Him and hinted that it was Judas.

Bible scholars suggest 3 reasons why Judas betrayed Jesus;
~ The primary reason seems to have been his greed for money — John tells us that Judas used to steal from the common fund.
~Bitter hatred due to disillusionment might have been a second reason. As a zealot who hated the Romans, Judas might have expected that his master would overthrow the Romans using His Divine power. Instead, Jesus preached love and peace.
~A third reason may have been that Judas supposed that his betrayal would give Jesus an occasion to fight back and conquer the Romans. That may be the reason why he committed su***de when he saw Jesus arrested without any resistance from Him.

●We, too, can betray Jesus and His ideals for money, for power and influence, or for selfish pleasure. Let us examine our conscience when we wrongly think that our God disappoints us by promoting chastity, poverty, justice, and righteousness in the Holy Bible, by not answering our prayers as and when we want, by allowing suffering and premature death in our families and communities, and by not punishing the wicked right here, right now. Let us be on our guard not to betray Jesus as Judas did.

●Holy Week is the time to assess our life, examine our conscience, do penance for our infidelity, and make practical resolutions to reform our lives with God’s help.

●We are little Judases—we fall to small temptations we can’t seem to overcome. These little things can have a negative impact on our spiritual life over time.

Reflect, today, upon the witness of Judas. Use him as a source of meditation and self-examination this Holy Week. What is it in your life that you desire more than our Lord? What temptation clouds your thinking and leads you to choices that you know will end in emptiness? Strive to eradicate every disordered desire within you this day and choose wisely the will of God instead. Do not let yourself continue to believe the lies that keep you from making Jesus and His holy will the one and only focus of your life.

_My Divine Lord, You and You alone must become the focus of my life. You and You alone are of the greatest value in life. Help me to shed all earthly desires in life so that I will not fall into the temptations that lead to empty promises and so that I will embrace the true and fulfilling promises that come from You._

_He will not cry out, nor make his voice heard in the street._

*A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 42: 1-7*

Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my Spirit; He shall bring forth justice to the nations. Not crying out, not shouting, not making His voice heard in the street.

A bruised reed He shall not break, and a smoldering wick He shall not quench, until He establishes justice on the earth; the coastlands will wait for His teaching.

Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spreads out the earth with its crops. Who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it: I, the Lord, have called you for the victory of justice. I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations. To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

_Let her keep this for the day of my burial._

*A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John 12: 1-11*

Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for Him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with Him. Mary took a litre of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. Then Judas the Iscariot, one of His Disciples, and the one who would betray Him, said, “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days’ wages and given to the poor?” He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions. So Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

The large crowd of the Jews found out that He was there and came, not only because of Him, but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too, because many of the Jews were turning away and believing in Jesus because of him.

_The Gospel of the Lord._

*REFLECTION ON TODAY'S WORD*

_Theme: *Expressing extravagant Love to Jesus*_

The Love that knows no bounds. As Jesus dines with His beloved friends, Mary does something that only love can do. She took the most precious thing she had and spent it all on Jesus. Her love was not calculated but extravagant. Mary's action was motivated by only one thing, her love for Jesus and her gratitude for God's mercy. She did something which a Jewish woman would never do in public. She loosed her hair and anointed Jesus with her tears. It was customary for a woman on her wedding day to bound her hair. For a married woman to loosen her hair in public was a sign of grave immodesty. Mary was oblivious to all around her, except for Jesus. She took no thought for what others would think, but what would please her Lord. In humility, she stooped to anoint Jesus' feet and to dry them with her hair. How do you anoint the Lord's feet and show Him your love and gratitude?

John's Gospel records that the whole house was filled with the perfume of the ointment (John 12:3). What Mary had done brought sweetness not only in the physical sense but the spiritual sense as well. Her lovely deed shows the extravagance of love - a love that we cannot outmatch.

The Lord Jesus showed us the extravagance of His Love in giving the best He had by pouring out His Blood for our sake and by anointing us with His Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul says that nothing will be able to separate us from the Love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:39). Do you allow the Love of Christ to rule in all your thoughts and intentions, and in all your words and deeds?

The cost to the giver shows the true beauty and goodness of a heart filled with love and gratitude.
Why was Judas critical of Mary's lovely deed? Judas viewed her act as extravagant wastefulness because of greed._A person views things according to what is inside the heart and soul._ Judas was an embittered man and had a warped sense of what was precious and valuable, especially to God. Jesus had put Judas in charge of their common purse, no doubt because he was gifted in financial matters. The greatest temptation we can face will often come in the area of our greatest strength or gift. Judas used money entrusted to him for wrong and hurtful purposes. He allowed greed and personal gain to corrupt his heart and to warp his view of things. He was critical of Mary because he imputed unworthy motives. Do you examine your heart correctly when you impute wrong or unworthy motives towards others?

Reflect, today, upon ways in which you can imitate this act of loving devotion offered by Mary to Jesus. In what ways can you pour forth in an abundant way your time, money, talents, and energy upon our Lord? How can you best express your devotion to Him this Holy Week? Seek out ways to do this directly for the one and simple reason that you love our Lord and want to express that love this week.

_My glorious Jesus, You are worthy of all praise and honour. You are worthy of our deepest devotion and love. As I enter into this Holy Week, I pray that it will be a time in which I may express my deepest love for You. Help me to pour forth that love in abundance this week so as to show You the glory and praise You deserve._
