Mercy is so mercilessly on point with her lyricism, one might think she’s been writing even before she was born!

A new publication from Kitara Nation Poetry MY COUNTRY AND HER MUSING NEIGHBOURS.

Featured poem in the photo: A River’s Voice by a Poet from Uganda, Abdallah Khim.

{A River’s Voice}

I speak to you this morning
With a lonely voice,
Tell me frankly from deep inside you...

Is it a crime when l dry?
Will you love me even without fish?
Will my service be of help after flooding?
Will l be satisfactory to you all times?

I tell you please...
Don’t neglect me because it’s dry season
And you see me helpless,
Every morning comes in it’s own way.

Don’t curse me
Because l fall victim of disaster,
It’s not my will to harm,
I heart you much.

Please fishermen,
Don’t get tired of carrying your hooks and baits
Because sometimes you go back home with none,
You never know what tomorrow brings.

I now speak to everyone...
Love me when l least deserve,
That is when l need it most,
Don’t love me when l’m worth,
Do it when l’m worth,
Do it when l’m worthless.

The book is only 30,000shs

Listening to news and a certain Honourable Mpuuga is advising the people of Luwero to move on from expecting the Political Returnees, to start over and stop waiting for the now big bellied soldiers who walked through their villages hungry, this made me think of this poem by Anena

{The Political Returnee
by Harriet Anena}

He looked master in the eye
& saw a vision long blurred.

The convoy had veered off the road.

He fled the camp,
looked back & saw
a house long de-roofed.

There was no movement.

The 10 Sacred Creed
lay beneath war boots.

He tore the menu-fasto
of deception,
wore black every Monday,
rallied the poor
to shame looters
of the Treasury.

But he’s back in the brotherhood,
gifting his conscience
to the predator,
relearning songs they sang
in Luwero as they
their way to the top.

December plot for Art, Books, Poetry lovers all over Uganda is here and the poet’s are Raging!

Literally, look at all these lineups, some of them are on the same days but even better because like on the 4th of December, there is Mercy Geno, the shy poet’s show and a private reading titled THE PERKS OF SMOKING TOO MUCH by Shiraz Batanda .blackpoet at motiv and and a Bukoto Street Christmas pop-up organized by Kona , but here is the beauty in how much activity there is around writers and poets and artists of Uganda, the fact that Mercy Geno, the shy poet’s show is happening in Gulu, and the other event, in Kampala , The diversity of events, the accessibility of the events, the availability of art, is becoming more of a norm in Kampala-and all over Uganda ( case in point being Mercy Geno, the shy poet’s show in Gulu on the 4th of December ) and that is something that l, as an Art enthusiast in Uganda is very proud of!

Another clash happens to be around the Love Rhymes IN THE WOODS, organized by Echo Minds Poetry that is happening on the 11th of December. It’s clashing with The Christmas Book Fair organized by Goethe Zentrum & LADU POETRY H.o.u.s.e that is happening at Nyungu Yamawe Forest Park located on the outskirts of the city in Kira, Bulindo. Somehow, the city dwellers that can’t travel so far into Nyungu Yamawe Forest Park get to stay and enjoy purchasing and interacting with books from Uganda and East Africa at Central Perk, Old Kira Road.

On the 12th December, we have two giant events too, a poetry reading by Davis the Poet at motiv and a poetry show performance by Lus and The Band , two comparisons; a stand alone Artist/ Poet, alongside a collective effort ( Lus and The Band ) to bring Art to the people.

It almost feels like the Ugandan Artist, Ugandan Creative, Ugandan Writer, Ugandan Poet, and everyone who loves to watch them is finally able to sit back, relax, and let Art take charge. Happy December yall Art Lovers out there♥️
