John Cadet, one of Citylife’s founders, has passed away.
John moved from London to Thailand in 1961, teaching English at Chitralada Palace School as well as working as news editor at Bangkok World Newspaper. He moved to Chiang Mai in the seventies and taught English literature at Payap University, as well as becoming a private tutor for many students in Chiang Mai, including Citylife editor Pim Kemasingki, whom he taught after school twice a week for about five years, opening her up to the world of literature with his passion. Pim credits John with much of her love for writing, a tast assigned to her twice per week. John has written numerous books and papers on Buddhist literature as well as novels and travel publications. He then joined forces with two friends to found the then-Chiang Mai Newsletter in 1992, meeting monthly to cut, paste, write, edit and publish the small magazine. He was an intelligent, kind, unassuming, sweet man whose love for learning was infectious and whose many students across Chiang Mai remember with the greatest of memories. John used to dig into the wedge of cake provided with each lesson with great gusto, riding off on his big bike after each lesson to head to his next student. John leaves behind his beloved wife and daughters.
John’s funeral will be held at Wat Pa Paeng

"Opening the Vault of Ancient Textiles" is an exhibition that gathers valuable ancient textiles from Southeast Asia, some over 100 years old, from two legendary textile collectors of Chiang Mai, Khun Akkaradet Nakbanlung from the 'Sabunnga' Antique Textile Museum and Khun Sirirat Jiwanuwong from 'Rangtarn Collection'. They have opened their vaults to present selected rare and beautiful textiles for enthusiasts to admire. Some of these precious textiles will also be available for purchase, allowing individuals to wear or collect them, thereby promoting preservation and transmission to future generations sustainably.
