Lee's Real Music Radio Pod is an eclectic blend of music programs, news & features for your heart, body, mind & soul that all got started with "Anything Goes", a radio program in Bangkok, Thailand that ran for over 30 years featuring great vintage music from as far back as the 30's right up to current interpretations of classic tunes & hosted by Jim Davison who at the age of 101 & semi-retired(!)

asked me to help him carry on with the show. I'm now doing my own show, 'Real Music Radio' featuring an even wider variety of music from many genres and time periods. This page will feature links to the programs & clips both old & new with all the timeless music that is simply and historically the very best along with music commentary related to current events, topical issues and other themes.

Good vibes & Best wishes Van Morrison 🙏🌟

Happy 79th birthday to Van Morrison - creator of some of the most sublime spiritual music ever recorded, especially in the 1980s. I love this photo because it contains two of my heroes, and shows that Van is still a spiritual explorer, even if those themes don't show up much in his recent music...The lady in the photo is Jane Stephenson (apologies if I misrember the name!)

A paean to "earworms"; ]

Psychologists from UC Santa Cruz wanted to study "earworms," the types of songs that get stuck in your head and play automatically on a loop. So they asked people to sing out any earworms they were experiencing and record them on their phones when prompted at random times throughout the day.

On August 18, 1955, Pete Seeger was subpoenaed to testify before the House on Un-American Activities Committee but refused to name personal and political associations on the grounds that this would violate his First Amendment rights. He was charged with contempt of Congress but in May 1962, an appeals court ruled the indictment to be flawed and overturned his conviction, but it also got him blacklisted and banned from recording, broadcasting and performing until he was invited and allowed to sing on The Smothers Brothers TV show in 1967. Pete's songs, pro~union, anti~war activism and humanitarian concerns went on to influence other musical artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and many others. So, why was he so persecuted by the authorities? Well, at the age of 17, a very young and idealistic Pete Seeger joined the Young Communist League, then at the height of its influence, eventually only leaving the Communist Party after seeing how socialism was being exploited in Russia. “I’m still a communist, in the sense that I don’t believe the world will survive with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer,” but according to our government, “Only Commies used words like peace and freedom,” Seeger later recalled. The story of Pete Seeger's life mission to use music to help usher in a new more fair political system that would marry a truly egalitarian model of government with The American Dream is recounted in this brilliant PBS documentary. Highly recommended (as we now approach another US presidential election).

I grew up with the 'Folk Music Revival' in the early 60's resounding through my prepubescent mind; songs like "We Shall Overcome" & Peter, Paul & Mary's version of "Blowin' in the Wind". Buying Dylan's "The Times They Are A~Changin'" album in 1964 with money I made from my paper route the same day it was released (!) kinda said it all. In 1965 The Bryds' electrified version of "Hey Mr. Tambourine Man" heralded the 'Folk Rock' movement...Croz was at the center of that. Being a 15 year-old misfit at the time, I related to his mercurial & rebellious nature. His birthday is also the day after mine. Rest in purpose bro. 🤟😏

Remembering David Crosby
-> https://musicthisday.com/

David Van Cortlandt Crosby (August 14, 1941 – January 18, 2023) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He first found fame as a member of the Byrds, with whom he helped pioneer the genres of folk rock and psychedelia in the mid-1960s, and later as part of the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash, who helped popularize the California sound of the 1970s. In addition to his music, Crosby was known for his outspoken personality, politics, and personal troubles; he was sometimes depicted as emblematic of the counterculture of the 1960s.

Bringing a legend to life (almost)... {historical note: Robert Johnson (27), an early blues singer and guitarist, died on 16 August 1938, near Greenwood, Mississippi. The cause was not officially recorded. He was reportedly in extreme pain and suffering from convulsions;[109] this has led to theories he had been poisoned with strychnine by a jealous husband; however, the alleged poisoning is said to have taken place several days earlier and most strychnine deaths take place within hours of ingestion. Another report claims he died of syphilis or pneumonia. The uncertain location of his gravesite has made it impossible to exhume his body for further investigation.}

Robert Johnson.

I have no idea who created this image, but they did a great job filling in (and coloring) around one of the original black & white Robert Johnson photos.

*If anyone has any information about this image, please let me know by posting.*

Note: Lorenzo Folli added the color to the original Robert Johnson photo. Thanks KWPQ FM 103.3

First peek at the new Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" has divided the internet over Timothée Chalamet's singing in James Mangold’s upcoming look at Dylan’s early years in New York as a folk singer and his gradual transformation into the genre~bending artist who went electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Mangold is no stranger to music biopics. 2005’s “Walk the Line” saw Joaquin Phoenix take on the role of country singer Johnny Cash, ultimately earning him an Academy Award nomination. Phoenix also did his own singing for that movie. In this new bioflick Elle Fanning depicts Dylan's girlfriend Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro plays Joan Baez and Edward Norton is Pete Seeger!
