Continued Price Hike in Western Equatoria State Deepens Community Struggles

CDTY ANISA RADIO 8th Aug 2024_ As inflation continues to surge, residents in Yambio and other parts of Western Equatoria State are grappling with increasingly exorbitant prices for basic commodities, leading to severe economic distress and heightened uncertainty.

On Tuesday morning, during the Agriculture Show program on Anisa Radio, community members expressed their growing concerns over the sky-high market prices. The increased cost of living has left many struggling to provide for their families and meet daily needs.

Lucy, a resident of Timbiro in Yambio, described the dire situation faced by women in her community, highlighting the prohibitive cost of basic items. "A bar of soap costs 3,000 SSP here in Timbiro," she said.

In other areas of Western Equatoria, the price is even higher, reaching 4,000 SSP per a bar of soap.

Bashir Ibrahim from Gangara Emilia in Yambio voiced his frustration over the logistical challenges exacerbated by the rising costs.

He noted that transportation has become increasingly difficult due to expensive spare parts and fuel.

This has severely impacted farmers, who are struggling to transport their goods from remote villages to urban markets.

Samuel Peter from Nzara County explained that the economic crisis has compelled farmers to hike prices for their produce to cope with market demands. He urged fellow farmers to manage their harvests carefully, given the challenging economic environment.

The South Sudanese Pound (SSP) is depreciating rapidly against the US Dollar, with the exchange rate now exceeding 400,000 SSP for $100 in Yambio.

This dramatic devaluation further exacerbates the financial strain on local residents, who are already facing skyrocketing costs for everyday necessities.

The combined effect of these economic pressure is creating a sense of despair and helplessness among community members, who are now struggling more than ever to meet their basic needs and ensure their families' well-being.
