BRINGING AWARENESS TO THE DOORSTEP OF PEOPLE

ADVOCACY RADIO IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PLAN INTERNATIONAL ENGAGED BAGDAD COMMUNITY

In a bid to protect our environment and mitigate the impacts of climate change, Advocacy Radio in partnership with Plan International Sierra Leone through the Youth Challenge Fund has ended a day's engagement with community stakeholders and residents of Bagdad in Port Loko City.

Welcoming the facilitators and staff of Advocacy Radio, was the Community Head man, Yusif Hamoud. Supported by another resident, Alhaji Foday Conteh who both described climate actions as man-made activities, highlighting several causes including deforestation, charcoal burning and improper construction of houses and residential homes even close to the cemetery areas. "Because of our unchecked actions, we now experience high temperature, more rains and heavy breeze than before" said Alhaji.

Other speakers like Idrissa and Sawdatu Kanu believed that poverty is a major cause luring people to rapidly embark on deforestation and charcoal burning. In fact, according to Sawdatu, charcoal burning is a great means of survival for most locals, but equally advised that "We can reduce climate change and deforestation through replacement of cutdown trees".

Speaking from a mother's perspective, Fatmata Bangura admitted that a change in attitude will drastically help in reducing the negative contributions of human activities towards climate change.

In their responses as facilitators, Nancy Gbamoi and Khalil S. Kamara replied that everyone is responsible for their actions and thus, must make moves for their communities. "To promote and develop our environments, the responsibility greatly lies on us" said Nancy, who also requested for airtime from Advocacy Radio on climate change on behalf of the people of Bagdad. "Leading by example, I am donating 20 trees to be planted and NLe 500 for rehabilitation of the community road". Other individuals including the lead climate change campaigner, Khalil S. Kamara also donated the same.Plan InternationalPlan International Sierra Leone
