The book presents a collection of exercises
on a number of technology-related
topics, such as environment and
sustainability, Learning should be a full-body experience. I decided to write a book on teaching technology outdoors when I was named Technology Teacher of the Year. At the time, I worked in a lower secondary school (year – , the last three years of compulsory school in the Swedish educat
ion system) and found myself lacking the methods, ideas and tools to move teaching outdoors. I feel support is needed to take the step out, since
teachers rarely have as much planning time as we need. My hope is that this book will be an aid in taking some technology teaching outdoors. I have chosen to put most of my effort into the didactic aspect,
to make it easier to actually hold lessons outdoors. It should not
be necessary to make extensive preparations for an outdoor lesson, preferably no more than for an indoor one. It should be easy and convenient for everyone involved. Most of the activities can be held in nature, in the immediate vicinity of the school or the schoolyard. Why stay inside when you can be outdoors? What is the benefit of holding lessons outdoors instead of in the
classroom where everyone is at home and knows how things should be? One of the most important reasons, in my view, is that everything is much easier outdoors. Pupils can apply all their senses to learning and it’s easy to provide concrete examples and illustrate connections between topics. It is also easier to see how things interact when you
can see all the technology around you.
