Today, Serbian artist Marina Abramovic turns 70. In the last century, she organised several artistic events that moved the world.

Probably the most terrifying experiment took place in 1974 in Naples. Rhythm 0, as the show was called, attended by dozens of people who had a single task. Doing whatever they want with the artist.

Abramovic stood in the middle of the room for six hours and besides her there was only a table with 72 items. Among them were roses, food, drinks, but also razors, scissors or a loaded gun. People could use the objects as they liked to interact with the artist.

At first it all started innocently. People fed the artist, gave her a rose and touched her shyly. Gradually, however, the intensity of the crowd began to increase. People started to stab the girl with thorns, ripped her clothes, cut her, tried to r**e her and shoved a loaded gun in her mouth.

After the experiment was over, almost none of the participants was able to look the artist in the eye. Thanks to the brutality people performed on it, this performance is considered one of the most terrifying attempts to show what people are capable of.

Still can't get over how beautiful this location is. So fortunate that we were able to find the right place and do this photoshoot before the flowers started wilting. :)

'Number sense' in colour theory...
I'm warning you, this is about to get nerdy, so this unlikely to be optimum Friday night reading for most of you and I apologise in advance for that 😁
I aim to write a full article on this topic at some point, so feel free to skip this Friday night rant below and catch the full piece when I finally get around to putting it together. To the rest of you, enjoy my first draft below.

With the warnings out of the way, let me explain the two images I've shared here. The image on the left is the final shot and this is the one you've already seen. On the right is the same image, but before I adjusted the colour of the styling (see the yellow/green swimsuit before I converted it to orange).

But why did I adjust the colour of the outfit?
This image is an extremely simplified example of this, but our eyes are accustomed to decoding imagery extremely quickly. By me adjusting the colour of the outfit, I have simplified the image for our eyes. It can be argued that many images we see that are touted as 'visually appealing' are often fairly simple and easy to understand. By me reducing the colour palette of this shot, I am making the image easier to understand.

It's at this stage you need to ask yourself, 'do I prefer the image on the left?'. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you do and this simplified colour palette is the reason for this.
We often speak of colour theory and harmony, and many artists will give you rules to live by when it comes to colour, but in reality, it all comes down to our perception and understanding of colour and how quickly we can process it.

Sidebar Rant: This is one of the reasons people like black and white shots. Ask them, 'why do you prefer that shot in black and white?' They will nearly always say things like, 'it's cleaner/simpler/less distracting/engaging'. But all of that just means that the colour version was poorly coloured. It's why I personally dislike black and white shots that weren't shot with black and white in mind. They all have a lazy colour image underneath them.
Rant over.

What is Number Sense?
Number sense is our innate ability to understand numbers when displayed as shapes. For example, If I throw three pebbles on the table in front of you, you almost instinctively know there is three pebbles there, your brain does not take the time to sit and count 1, 2, 3, it knows immediately.
This same principle applies up to around 5 or 6 objects in most of us, but beyond this, we have to actually count the items individually.

Now let us apply this number sense to colour theory. When we are presented with colour theory, it is nearly always depicted in 2, 3, 4 and sometimes 5 colours. Complimentary colours are 2 colours, triadic colours are 3 colours and so on.
Can you now start to see where colour theory is getting its power from?

Present an image in a limited colour palette and the brain is able to instantly assimilate its content. Busy images are rejected for the opposite reasons and thus, a simple colour scheme is often visually more powerful than complicated ones.

What I'm explaining here is like an umbrella colour theory. All sympathetic colours abide by it and I would encourage you to keep this in mind when shooting.

Can you simplify the colours in your image whist still maintaining the impact of the subjects within it? If you can, then it might be worth doing.
...ok now it's the weekend! You can safely switch off your brains now😁

If you read all of that on a social media post, then you're the true MVP and I love your dedication to the craft and your patience for my Friday night rants😅

Have an amazing weekend guys. Do you have any questions about the topic above? Let me know in the comments. Otherwise, I will see you all again on Monday and hopefully we can do another LIVE stream on Tuesday 🎉

See you all then ❤️

Why IMAGINE Magazine?

Why do we press the camera button? Why do we admire photographs, paintings, sculptures or artistic drawings? Why does aesthetics attract us? Why do we like visual arts? Why do we lose minutes or hours in a row flipping through a magazine, the pictures from an online group or from a photography website?

The answers are many and vary but they all have the same roots: we are invariably attracted to beauty! We like to admire, we want to capture moments – on celluloid or in strings of bits – the images created in our mind, depicted in the smallest details. We like to take pictures! We like to relive the memories immortalized in these pictures that we take!

“Photography is the story I fail to put into words” is what Destin Sparks said. As a photographer, I completely agree with him, and as an art lover I lose track of time when a collection of visual stories falls into my hands.

This is what IMAGINE is all about!
