PTI Chairman and former premier Imran Khan on Thursday said PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif was trying to return to Pakistan and was “posing himself as Nelson Mandela”.

He lashed out at the ruling coalition government, saying “thieves who had looted the country” had returned back after “striking a deal with General (retd) Bajwa”.

Addressing the students via video link from Zaman Park, Lahore the PTI chief noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited foreign countries and said that he had not come to seek financial help but was compelled to do so.

“Your premier degrades the nation when he speaks like this. He (PM Shehbaz) is a shameless person. What respect do thieves enjoy? They steal [nation’s] money and send it abroad. They (ruling coalition) say they will not work hard and utilise the aid money,” he said.

“First they struck a deal with General (retd) Musharraf and now with General (retd) Bajwa,” he added, saying “they will now plunder the nation’s wealth”.

The PTI chairman said that the ruling coalition got cases worth Rs1100 billion quashed against them after recent amendments in the accountability law.

He said cases against PPP Co-Chairman Asif Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur were also quashed, noting that the “entire Sindh knows that both siblings take commission in every project”.

There's also a smaller 'Flip' phone with a large cover screen.

Back in August, Xiaomi showed us how to make a thinner horizontal folding phone with its Mix Fold 2, but now it's Oppo's turn to demonstrate how to make them lighter. The new Find N2 shares a similar landscape screen design with its predecessor, yet it weighs as little as 233 grams. That's 42 grams lighter than before, around 30 grams lighter than the likes of Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4, and even a few grams lighter than an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Oppo, therefore, claims the new device is the "industry's lightest horizontally folding phone." Both the green and white versions of the Find N2 weigh an extra 4 grams due to their glass back but still come in lighter than the competition.

Oppo uses a smaller second-generation flexion hinge, as well as its carbon fiber underframe (instead of aluminum) for its flexible screen. According to TÜV Rheinland's certification, the Find N2 can apparently withstand over 400,000 folds under normal conditions (doubling Find N's record), and over 100,000 folds at 50°C (122°F ) or down to -20°C (-4°F). The same company also gave a green tick to the phone's 1.2-meter drop test. The battery is about the same size as before, bumping slightly up to 4,520mAh, but now supports faster 67W SuperVOOC charging, which takes 10 minutes to go from zero to 37 percent, or 42 minutes for a full charge.

Moscow has said no “Christmas ceasefire” was on the cards after nearly 10 months of war in Ukraine, with fighting looking set to drag on through the winter.

“There is no calm on the frontline,” the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said in his regular evening video address on Wednesday. “Every day and every metre is given extremely hard. And especially where the entire tactic of the occupiers boils down to the destruction of everything in front of them with artillery – so that only bare ruins and craters in the ground remain.”

Asked on Wednesday whether Moscow had seen proposals for a “Christmas ceasefire”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “No, no such offers have been received from anybody. This topic is not on the agenda.”

Zelenskiy had called on Russia this week to start withdrawing its troops by Christmas as the first step towards a peace deal, but Peskov said on Tuesday there would be no peace with Kyiv until Zelenskiy accepted the “realities” on the ground – referring to Russian control over parts of four Ukrainian regions it annexed in September following coercive and illegal “referendums”. After a series of lightning Ukrainian counteroffensives, Kyiv has regained control over around half of the territory Moscow captured in the first weeks of its invasion.

Military analysts say a winter deadlock could now set in, even as fierce fighting continues especially in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, where Russian forces are pushing to capture the town of Bakhmut.

The White House national security spokesman, John Kirby, said the scale of the ongoing violence tempered hopes for an imminent end to hostilities.

“Just given what we’re seeing in the air and on the ground in Ukraine, it’s difficult to conclude that this war will be over by year’s end,” Kirby said in response to a question about the prospects for a negotiated peace with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. “So there is active fighting going on right now. We would expect that that will continue for some time going forward.”

Argentina’s football has always been about deity and devotion; love transcending to passion with madness at its climax. At the World Cup in Qatar, there’s been a restoration of faith in one man who they hope will end their long wait for the title and fulfill his destiny of becoming a champion of the world and attaining eternal greatness.

Lionel Messi is one game away from achieving exactly that, yet there lingers a strong feeling of predestination in the desert. The whole world will pause to witness that moment in the final on Sunday.

It couldn’t have been set up so perfectly as it is. Messi showed he’s a mere mortal as he took a step towards immortality in Argentina’s semi-final victory over Croatia at the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday night.

Early on, Messi had clutched his left hamstring several times before he turned on the style to inspire Argentina to a 3-0 victory, scoring once and setting up another for Julian Alvarez — who got the other two goals and reached the World Cup final for the second time in his career. At 35, this is his last chance and Messi confirmed that’s the case just before he boarded the bus back to the team hotel.

It had been a busy few hours for Messi after the match had finished. While his teammates celebrated on the pitch; dancing and reliving the moment, Messi was doing the pitch-side interview. He then went to the dressing room to join his teammates in another moment of celebration before sharing an emotional moment with Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni — the side now within touching distance of delivering Argentina’s third World Cup title and a first since 1986. Tears in their eyes, Scaloni told Messi: “Thank you!” As they embraced, Messi said, “I love you!”

Islamabad, Pakistan – At least 16 Pakistani civilians have been wounded as fighting broke out between Pakistani and Afghan border forces for the second time in less than a week, a Pakistani medical official says.

An emergency was declared on Thursday at the main hospital in the Pakistani city of Chaman after heavy artillery firing started around midday (07:00 GMT) near the Chaman-Spin Boldak border crossing, Dr Akhtar Mohammed, an official at the hospital, told Al Jazeera.

“Four civilians were in critical condition, and they have been sent to Quetta for further treatment,” he said, adding that two children were among the wounded. “No dead bodies were brought to hospital so far.”

Pakistani military officials alleged “indiscriminate firing” was directed from the Afghan side of the border towards civilian areas of Chaman.

Chaman authorities told Al Jazeera that markets near the border have shut down and a tense calm has fallen over the city.

The Afghan Ministry of Defence alleged that Pakistani forces had opened fire first.
