Microsoft today announced the public preview of Python in Excel, which will allow advanced spreadsheet users to combine scripts in the popular Python language and their usual Excel formulas in the same workbook.

This feature will first roll out to Microsoft 365 Insiders as part of the Excel for Windows beta channel. Yet while the feature will first only be available in the desktop version of Excel, Microsoft notes that the Python calculations will run in the Microsoft Cloud. Python runs perfectly well on any modern PC, so I’m not sure why Microsoft went the cloud route here.

“Now you can do advanced data analysis in the familiar Excel environment by accessing Python directly from the Excel ribbon,” Stefan Kinnestrand, the GM for Modern Work at Microsoft, explains. “No set up or installation is required. Using Excel’s built-in connectors and Power Query, you can easily bring external data into Python in Excel workflows.”

Nuralogix's AI app Anura can detect health issues by scanning video selfie.

While experts in the industry like tech billionaire Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have been ringing alarms over the potential dangers of AI, researchers have been making an effort to put the technology to good use.

With the remarkable use of AI, experts in the medical field have introduced an app that allows doctors to give you a complete diagnosis online in only 30 seconds. All you have to do is take a selfie.

The app is able to identify vital signs like heart rate and blood pressure, mental health-related diagnostics like stress and depression levels, physical characteristics like body mass index and skin age, your level of risk for conditions like hypertension, stroke, and heart disease, and biomarkers like blood sugar levels.

Chief Medical Officer of NuraLogix, Dr Keith Thompson, while talking to CNN about the app, said: "We're using a novel form of remote photoplasmography. We call it 'Transdermal Optical Imaging,' and it's measuring the pulse wave and blood flow and multiple regions within the face.

Google Contacts now shows local time and weather.

Google Contacts has seen an uptick in new features this year, and it continues today with local time and weather information.

Entries that include an address will feature a card that notes the city and current time. You then get the temperature and condition, which is displayed both visually and textually. Tapping does not take you to Google Search or the Weather app for a full forecast, which would be convenient. It should also be placed higher up on the page.

Google Contacts makes clear the source, with weather.com responsible for the data, just like in Search. The overflow menu gives you a shortcut to edit the address. In our brief testing, the app will not show the time or weather for nearby locations.

Google is finally adding a native translate capability to Gmail for Android and iOS after long supporting it on the web client.

Before the message body, Gmail will show a “Translate to” banner. Tapping updates what appears below with the ability to “Show original” again and “Automatically translate” a specific language going forward.

Press the settings gear to pick another output language, with over 100 supported. This prompt appears when the contents of an email doesn’t match your “Gmail display language,” which is the first dropdown menu in web app settings.

You can manually translate a language by going into the three-dot overflow menu in the top-right corner if an email was not recognized. The feature can also be disabled for a specific language by clicking ‘x’ on the banner and then “Don’t translate [language] again.”

Translations in Gmail for Android are rolling out from today onwards, while it will come to iOS in the coming weeks. This is a much-needed integration as users previously had to open an email on their computer, or taking a screenshot on mobile and send it to Google Lens or Translate.

Instagram is launching a new feature that is designed to better protect users from unwanted images and videos in DMs, the company announced on Thursday. The official launch comes a few weeks after Instagram began testing the feature.

With this new feature, people looking to send DM requests to people who don’t follow them will face two new restrictions. First, rather than being able to send an unlimited number of DM requests to someone who doesn’t follow you, you will now only be able to send them one message. You will only be able to continue to send them DMs once they accept your request to chat.

Second, DM invites are now limited to text only, which means you can only send images, videos or voice notes to someone who doesn’t follow you after they’ve accepted your request to chat.

Instagram says with these new restrictions, people will no longer receive unwanted images or videos from users they don’t follow, nor will strangers be able to message them repeatedly. The social media giant notes that the new feature will be especially beneficial for women, as they often receive unsolicited nudes in their DMs.

It launched first on iOS in April.

YouTube’s higher-quality 1080p option is now available for all Premium subscribers on desktop globally, spokesperson Paul Pennington confirmed to The Verge. The company officially launched the “enhanced bitrate” 1080p in April on iOS after an earlier test.

I don’t pay for Premium, but I’ve seen the enhanced bitrate option on a handful of videos on Friday as I browsed YouTube in Chrome on my MacBook Air. When I try to click the enhanced bitrate, YouTube prompts me to subscribe to Premium to be able to use it. (If you decide to subscribe to Premium to get the better bitrate, you should know that the service is a bit more expensive than it used to be.)

If you’ve had trouble scanning QR codes on your Android, perhaps on a wall across the room, Google’s testing a new feature with developers that could make scanning from a distance easier.

You might soon not have as much trouble reading far away QR codes on your Android phone. Google is working on a new code scanner that automatically detects a QR code in the camera frame, zooms in, and reads it. The feature isn’t quite making its way to devices just yet — but it’s in the latest APIs Google is making available to developers.

Specifically, it's Google’s code scanner API that’s been updated with the new ability. It works in Google’s QR Code Scanner system app, but can also be implemented into other apps.

If developers implement the code scanner API, users won’t have to grant camera permissions — saving developers time by not having to build a custom experience. The API leverages Google’s on-device machine learning to interpret QR codes, and it only outputs a Barcode object to the app to maintain privacy for users. (It’s not clear what exactly is happening under the hood, but AI upscaling is a thing for other kinds of media.)

As pointed out by Android expert Mishaal Rahman, the new auto-zoom function is available in the new bundled ML Kit Barcode Scanning API library version 17.2.0 that can be built into apps (as well as unbundled version 18.3.0, which Google Play Services can download). It’s also included in version 16.1.0 of the code scanner API alone.

Shortwave replicates many of the features that were once found on Google’s now-defunct Inbox client.

Shortwave — an email app for iOS and the web that serves as the spiritual successor to Google Inbox — has fully arrived on Android devices following 18 months of beta testing. Version 1.0 of Shortwave is available to download via Google Play. The basic version is free to use, though you’ll need to pay a $9 monthly subscription to unlock premium features.

Shortwave was specifically developed by a group of former Google employees to fill the gap left after Google shut down its innovative Gmail alternative in 2019. Inbox was fairly radical for its time compared to rival email clients, providing features like Bundles (which automatically organized your email by type) and Delivery Schedules to control when those Bundles would arrive in your inbox. Its demise was mourned by many.

Hopefully “web” means what we all think it means.

If you go to Threads.net to access Meta’s popular Twitter clone, you’ll still find a spinning placeholder galaxy — but that should change in the next few weeks, according to a new tweet from CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

“Search and web coming in the next few weeks,” he tweets, saying he’s “excited about the team’s pace of shipping.”

Kenya has ordered Worldcoin to stop collecting data in the country due to privacy and security concerns.

Kenya is pumping the brakes on Worldcoin — the eyeball-scanning crypto project launched by OpenAI founder Sam Altman. The Kenyan government has ordered Worldcoin to stop collecting data in the country while it reviews the project for potential privacy and security risks, as reported earlier by Reuters.

Worldcoin is a project that uses your iris to create a unique digital identity, which you can then link to digital currencies managed through the company’s World App. The project launched last week and has had people lining up to get their eyeballs scanned by the shiny, silver orbs Worldcoin has set up in major cities around the globe.

The test is only available for a limited number of videos and users, and won’t replace existing video descriptions, but YouTube hopes they’ll help viewers decide what to watch.

Google is experimenting with the use of AI to auto-generate YouTube video summaries, according to a notice on a support page dated July 31st. The page, which we spotted via Android Police, notes that these summaries will only appear next to a limited number of English-language videos, and will only be viewable by a limited number of users. They’ll appear on YouTube’s watch and search pages, and are intended to give a brief overview of a video’s contents without replacing its existing description written by a human.

“We’re starting to test AI auto-generated summaries on YouTube, so that it’s easier for you to read a quick summary about a video and decide whether it’s the right fit for you,” the support page reads. Android Police notes that users are typically able to sign up to participate in YouTube experiments over at YouTube.com/new, though participating in some tests may require a YouTube Premium subscription.

The average ocean temperature has beat seasonal records since April of this year.

The world’s oceans have set a new temperature record with the potential to threaten Earth’s climate, marine life and coastal communities.

The temperature of the oceans’ surface hit 20.96 degrees Celsius (69.71 Fahrenheit) on Friday, according to European Union climate observatory data.

The last record was 20.95C (69.71F) in March 2016, said the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

The average ocean temperature has beat seasonal records since April of this year.

Warming oceans will affect marine plant and animal life, including the migration of certain species and the spread of invasive species, according to experts, which could in turn undermine food security in parts of the world.

“The ocean heatwave is an immediate threat to some marine life,” said Piers Forster of the International Centre for Climate at the University of Leeds.

“We are already seeing coral bleaching in Florida as a direct result and I expect more impacts will surface.”

As generative AI continues to pick up momentum, more and more companies are finding ways to incorporate the technology within their own platforms to optimize their services -- and to leverage that popularity for themselves. Now, Uber joins the crowd.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told Bloomberg this week that the company is working on its own AI chatbot, with no specific details disclosed.

"We're working on it right now," said Khosrowshahi in the interview.

Uber isn't new to the AI space, devoting an entire page on their website to Uber AI, delineating its multiple teams and projects relating to AI development.

In the Bloomberg interview, Khosrowshahi reiterated that idea, sharing how Uber has leveraged AI and machine learning within its technology for years, including the algorithms that make it possible to get matched with a ride.

This news followed the release of Uber's Q2 earnings report, which saw the ride-sharing company's first-ever quarterly operating profit even as revenue fell short of expectations

Snapchat is launching a new Lens Creator Rewards programme to reward AR creators and developers for their top-performing Lenses. If a creator’s creation is a top-performing Lens with strong interaction in the United States, India, or Mexico, the firm will pay them up to $7,200 per month.

The corporation initially launched this reward programme in these three nations. If the Lens does well in the United States, India, and Mexico, it will then expand to 40 qualifying countries.

Sophia Dominguez, Snap’s head of AR Platform Partnerships and Ecosystem, stated that the business intends to start small and gather feedback from its community before spreading the rewards programme to other regions.

Although Snapchat did not explain what the program’s qualifications are. Dominguez, on the other hand, says the business will look at a variety of measures, including views and Lens-specific information. Snap will also track how long users spend experimenting with Lenses.

Snapchat will shortly release more information about eligibility and restrictions.

When a creator receives a prize, they will receive an email telling them that their Lens is eligible for a reward. They will also receive notifications through their creator hub

Xiaomi has silently pulled its music player and streaming app Mi Music from the Play Store in India, continuing its shutdown of various services in the country where it is under regulatory pressure.

The China-based phone maker launched the Mi Music app in partnership with the Indian entertainment company Hungama in 2018 to provide music streaming to its customers. Archived pages on the web suggest that the app had more than 1 billion lifetime downloads.

“Get unlimited access to millions of music, curated playlists, and content from your favorite artists. This is the music app for you to listen to online and offline music,” the Play Store description of the app read.
