Weather Alert:

Very Severe Tropical Cyclone 'BIPARJOY' now located 313km south of Karachi and 208 km from Thatta with windspeed of 70-80 knots and minimum central pressure of 964mb. It has moved northeastward at 7km/hr over the past 6 hours. It is expected to lose some intensity and become 'Tropical storm' with windspeed reaching 60 knots due to incursion of dry air from northeast into the system. But other conditions which include low windshear and high sea surface temperatures are still favourable due to which it is likely for Biparjoy to make landfall near or at India- Pak border in southeast Sindh as a Tropical storm Biparjoy during next 24 hours.

Under the influence of long lived Biparjoy,
• Scattered to Widespread Thunderstorms associated with severe windstorm, heavy to extremely heavy falls and storm surge of 8-9 meters is likely in Southeast Sindh coastal parts (Thatta,Badin, Sujawal and Tharparkar regions) during 15-17 June.

• Scattered Thunderstorms associated with heavy falls and windstorm is also likely in Karachi,Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas regions during 15 - 17 June.

• Rough to very rough sea conditions is likely to persist till 17/18 June.

CATASTROPHIC FLOODING CAUSED BY TORRENTIAL MONSOON RAINS DURING JULY- AUGUST 2022

Since July, back to back monsoon low pressure systems (from Bay of Bengal) had affected most parts of Pakistan (especially Sindh province). This might be a result of climate change or result of La-Nina condition (which was present when heavy monsoon rains caused flooding in Sindh back in 2010).

As of now, the catastrophic flooding continues to cause widespread destruction in Pakistan, where 33 million people have now been affected, according to the government. The situation is likely to worsen over the coming days. and warnings have been issued for rising levels of the Indus and Kabul rivers.

The number of people who have died as a result of monsoon rain and flooding in Pakistan since mid-June now stands at 982, including 316 children. The figure represents an increase of almost 300 deaths in the last week. As of 20 August, 692 fatalities were reported.

As of 27 August, 339 people had lost their lives in Sindh Province. Fatalities were also reported in Balochistan (234), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (195), Punjab (167), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (37), Gilgit-Baltistan (9) and Islamabad Capital Territory (1).

Wide areas of the country are under water, with devastating impacts reminiscent of the floods in Pakistan in 2010 when at one point one fifth of the total land mass of the country was flooded.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Head of Delegation in Pakistan, Peter Ophoff said, “The devastation seen is giving frightening flashbacks of the devastating mega floods in 2010 which affected 20 million people.”

According to Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman, the current flooding has already impacted the lives of 33 million people.

“Pakistan is facing the worst humanitarian disaster of this decade and it has led to spectacular losses of lives, property and livelihood,” the minister said. “The amount of water on the ground has inundated huge swathes of Pakistan, with 33 million affected, many stranded".

Sixty-six districts have been officially declared to be ‘calamity hit’ by the Government of Pakistan – 31 in Balochistan, 23 in Sindh, 9 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and 3 in Punjab.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) the situation remains dynamic, and many more districts have been affected; the number of calamity-declared districts is expected to rise as rains continue to fall.

According to UNOCHA, more than 793,900 livestock – a critical source of sustenance and livelihoods for many families – have died, of which some 63 per cent are in Balochistan and 25 per cent in Punjab. Around 2 million acres (810,000 hectares) of crops and orchards have also been impacted, including at least 304,000 acres in Balochistan, 178,000 acres in Punjab and some 1.54 million acres in Sindh.

Some provinces in the country have seen a deviation from average August rainfall by between 200 and almost 800 percent. Minister Rehman said the extreme high levels of rain was a result of “monster monsoon cycles”.

“Pakistan is going through its 8th cycle of monsoon while normally the country has only 3 to 4 cycles of rain. The percentages of super flood torrents pare shocking. Sindh has received 784% more rainfall than average for the month of August while Balochistan has received 496% more rain than normal,” the minster said.

Padidan, a town in Sindh province has recorded 1,187 mm of rain so far this month. The previous highest total for an August month is 300 mm, recorded in 1992.

Images provided by the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) on 26 August reveal that as much as 55,000 km2 of land – mostly areas of Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh Provinces – is currently flooded.

“This map illustrates cumulative satellite-detected water using VIIRS in Pakistan between 03 to 23 August 2022. Within the cloud free analysed areas of about 780,000 km2, a total of about 55,000 km2 of lands appear to be affected with flood waters,” UNOSAT said.

MONSOON UPDATES- WML WEAKENS INTO LOW PRESSURE AREA (LPA)

Due to westerly dry winds incursion, WML has downgraded into Low pressure area (LPA) and is weakening rapidly. NO MORE RISK OF TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS FOR LOWER SINDH AND CENTRAL SINDH because the convergence zone of the system has shifted towards western Sindh extending towards major parts of Balochistan.

Overcast conditions associated to light/moderate showers expected at scattered places of lower Sindh including Karachi and Hyderabad during next 24 hours. HEAVY RAIN/THUNDERSTORMS expected at scattered places of western Sindh and some parts of Upper Sindh during the same period.

Heavy/very heavy downpours are also expected at scattered places of Balochistan during next 24 hours.

MONSOON UPDATES - WELL MARKED LOW PRESSURE AREA TO BRING VERY HEAVY RAINFALL IN MOST PARTS OF SINDH

WML currently present over Rajasthan-Sindh border, is expected to enter Central Sindh in next few hours, causing very heavy torrential downpours (100-150mm) in many parts of lower and Central Sindh including Hyderabad, Nawabshah and many other districts during next 24-36 hours.

Some moderate to heavy downpours are also expected in Karachi as well during the period. This system is likely to spread in Balochistan during next 24 hours causing heavy downpours over there as well.

Monsoon Updates - LPA again seen as Well marked low pressure today

In our previous updates, we have told you about weakening of intense monsoon low pressure but some factors has caused intensification of this LPA to well marked low pressure area(LPA) which produced showers in lower and Central Sindh while moderate to heavy falls in upper Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab today.

This system is not likely to weaken completely rather it may compensate in another low pressure area (Depression) forming a huge nexus from 22nd August. This system may also pour rains of same intensity over upper Sindh, lower and central Sindh, South Punjab and Balochistan during the coming week.

There is very high risk of Urban Flooding in mentioned areas.

Low pressure area (LPA) over Sindh is weakening rapidly as seen in latest satellite image (decreased cloud mass) due to incursion of dry western winds into the system. Now, system is shrinking in size and is limited to Upper Sindh only. More Rain/Thunder showers associated with intermittent moderate to at a time heavy falls expected in Upper Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab during next 24 hours.

Weather Updates:-
Well Marked Low pressure Area (WML) has finally weakened into low pressure area (LPA) and is present over Upper Sindh due to which continuous sheet of nimbostratus and Altostratus clouds covering central Sindh producing non stop moderate to at times heavy falls from last 24 hours. There is no strong possibility of thunderstorms due to lack of sufficient instability in Sindh.
Moderate showers and overcast weather is expected in major parts of central and Upper Sindh during next 24 hours.

Tropical Depression and it's associated convergence zone Updates - 01

Tropical depression is making its way towards West (along Makran coast) and the convergence zone associated with it has moved towards Balochistan, Upper Sindh and South Punjab. Strong thunderstorms (associated with heavy/isolated very heavy falls) expected in Balochistan, Upper Sindh and South Punjab during next 24 hours. However, partly cloudy/mostly cloudy/overcast weather conditions associated with light to moderate showers may prevail over lower Sindh due to effects of strong monsoon currents from Arabian sea.

Another system (low pressure) presently producing rains over Odisa/Chatisgarh is expected to move towards Sindh which may lead to flooding rains/heavy thunderstorms all over the Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab from Monday evening/night to Wednesday/Thursday.
