Happy National Heroes Day! Today, we honor the courageous individuals who have devoted their lives to securing the freedom and independence of our beloved country.

We pay tribute to the heroes of the past who fought to protect our nation, as well as to our modern-day heroes, particularly our seafarers, whose remarkable sacrifices make them true heroes to their families and our country.

As per Republic Act No. 9492 of 2007, National Heroes Day is observed every last Monday of August, with this year's celebration on the 26th.

Whirring noises enter my ear
As I sit in this conveyor belt called life
Parts being installed, instilling fear
Bolts screwed in my head, piercing like a knife

I am but a robot, at least that's what they say
Programmed to be like this and in that way
They tied me up, chained me down, anchored to the ground
Silenced in a way so as to not to make a sound

What I see is all there is and ever will be
No room for imagination nor for creativity
Stitching every hole to let not even an ounce drip
Suppressing every emotion down to the hips

I lay wondering whether this is still right
Mustering up the courage to put up a fight
Not caring 'bout the consequences, just want to be free
From this prison, the world that you want me to see

Despite the captivities, I know that I am able
Setting up the boundaries of where I'm capable
Keep your words for they are of no value
Heads up, for it's time for me to pursue

It has been a life-changing experience filled with many difficult moments, circumstances, and challenges. You might start by dreaming of being a midshipman, planning to enter a reputable maritime academy with interdisciplinary military training, and taking up all the rigorous screening procedures, which includes entrance examination, neuropsychological evaluation, and medical tests. After these meticulous screening processes, there is a one-month probationary period, where all the successful applicants will go through a series of physical, emotional, and mental challenges. Only the strongestโ€” the most qualified โ€” will remain.

The probationary period drives an all-out change for the challenged probies. How they behave, think, and respond will be tickled by massive changesโ€”transitioning from being civilian to being organized, disciplined, and honor-bearing individuals worthy of joining the corps of midshipmen. This period might be perceived as one of many tests an applicant could easily pass, but itโ€™s not. Instead, it is the period that requires the intense preparation for physical endurance, mental stability, and mental fortitude, akin to Charles Darwinโ€™s Theory of Natural Selection, which believes in โ€œsurvival of the fittest.โ€

Further, in this period comes a considerable number of resignees. The ones who have their own reasons for quitting; ones who have been greatly burdened by the challenges; ones who have lost the battle of raising their hopes against all odds. Interviews reveal that, unpreparedness becomes the most common reason for quitting. Unpreparedness weakens an applicantโ€™s chance to pass through and wave the banner of their dream to become an official member of the PMMA corps of midshipmen.

Moreover, others quit due to the hardships that have not been expected; due to loss of will, faith, and confidence; due to lacking reasons to stay and still fight. The feeling of homesickness, and the fear of being jailed from the stressful environment has become the greatest factors that trigger their mental fortitude to weigh down. Prohibited communication with their loved ones, banned usage of smartphones, limited time for every activity, highly pressured atmosphere, and awkward postures became a sort of norm within the one month of shaping their discipline. The loud shouts of their seniors and every whistle they hear indicate a rushing wind of fear to act orderly, to function properly, to be disciplined, adhering to the existing regimental rules and regulations.

Life inside the academy within this period became like a prison. Probies became prisonersโ€” prisoners that are all fighting to stand still, fighting to reach freedom; prisoners that bear hopeful dreams of becoming a cadet and bear strong patience to get through their meantime storm; prisoners with their faith and prayers, sweat and tears, strength and power as their main weapons to surpass this battlefield. Unfortunately, not all the applicants have the same level of vision, passion, and hope. Just like in life, living with no hope means living with no directions. Thus, applicants who brought shakeable hopes within them were not indeed directed to the triumphant end. Weakened hopes made them easily stumble as difficulties came along their way.

Many people may view the resignees as weak for not completing the race. They might be seen as having lost the battle because they quit. And maybe, many people would throw the words, โ€œWinners never quit; quitters never win.โ€ But, whatever it looks like in the eyes of others, only the eyes, heart, mind, and passion of a resignee will know the entire behind-the-scenes, sacrifices, and valid reasons for their decided resignation.

One thing is for sure: after all the processes they have gone through, it is also hard for them to decide and resign from the battle. Maybe it also took them some time to take a step back; perhaps they had a hard time thinking about how to deal with disappointments they might receive afterward; maybe they had fought enough and had nothing left to go still fighting. There are countless โ€œmaybes,โ€ and who are we to judge them?

After their resignation, they may grapple with feelings of disappointment, thinking they have let down those who supported them. On the other hand, they might also feel reliefโ€”freedom from the grueling training that had become their daily routine. Waking up at 0430 hours, fixing bunks, doing rigorous morning calisthenics and road runs, taking quick and orderly baths, cleaning stations, daily marches, double-time proceedings, square/inverted meals, seeking permission from seniors at the top of their voices, military drills, evening calisthenics, and then repeating the cycle again. Resignees might feel liberated from this stressful environment, but a part of them will likely be haunted by these routines, prompting thoughts of โ€œwhat if I had continued?โ€ They might feel regret of not being focused, strong enough, prepared, and stable. They might have sleepless nights thinking of unmet expectations for themselves, evaluating their worth, and questioning their capabilities. It must have been hard for them to cope with these fresh days of their resignations.

After days and months, the pain, regret, and envy may resurface as they witness their batchmates achieving their shared goals. The sounds of triumph, the pins of honor, and the smiles of those who persevered might be bittersweet for the resignees. However, these moments could also serve as a source of motivation, inspiring them to think, โ€œIf they can do it, I can do it too.โ€ They may come to realize that quitting is not the end but a necessary step on the path to achievement. They might decide to try again, but this time with the determination to win the battle.

We all know the saying, โ€œQuitters never win.โ€ But can we really equate quitting with failure? As we mature, we come to understand that quitting can sometimes be essentialโ€”quitting is leading too. No one is perfect, and no one can claim to be. Each of us has numerous constraints that contribute to our shortcomings. Quitting might seem undesirable and inconvenient because it discourages us, but it also provides an opportunity to recognize our flaws.

Quitting is leading too: Yes, resignees chose to leave the battle. But behind their decisions lies a brave willingness to try again. They are determined to prove that their resignation does not signify the end of their dreams. Quitting leads to improvement and betterment. It allows them to reflect, examine themselves more deeply, and evaluate the reasons for their resignation. In this way, quitting leads them to learn more, to improve what they've mistaken. Such evaluations can also help them develop themselves, paving the way for future achievement. Furthermore, because the disappointments of their resignation are fresh in their minds for such a long time, they always vary them and are thus less likely to repeat them.

It is undoubtedly a long journey for someone who doesn't give up on their dreams. Ups and downs, small and big waves may meet us along with our ways, but we must remember that a smooth sea will never make a skilled and tough sailor. With all positivity, keep going โ€” keep it leading to success along this relentless voyage.

SAN NARCISO, ZAMBALES - Three hundred ninety-seven probationary midshipmen and midshipwomen of Class 2028 began their journey at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) with the reception rites held at the PMMA parade ground, August 5.

In his inspirational message, PMMA Superintendent Commodore Joel Y Abutal urged the probationary midshipmen to embrace obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow, motivating them to stay focused, work hard, and support one another.

"Tandaan ninyo ito ay simula ng pag-abot ng inyong mga pangarap hindi lamang para sa inyong mga sarili kundi para higit sa lahat sa inyong mga pamilya," he said.

Meanwhile, Captain Ronald D Barro PMMA, Assistant Superintendent for Academics, Training, Research, and Extension (ATRE) reminisced his humble beginnings and recalled the time when he was in the shoes of young aspirants, filled with dreams, aspirations, and a bit of uncertainty.

He also advised the parents to โ€œbelieve, trust, and surrenderโ€ encouraging them to understand that "whatever the outcome, whether they [the aspirants] complete the probationary period or not, it's all part of the greater plan."

Chief Officer Rey A Ramos, head of the Admissions Office, presented and officially turned over the probationary midshipmen and midshipwomen to the Department of Midshipman Affairs through the Dean, Captain Franco T Ladica MM MSc.

Captain Ladica expressed gratitude to the parents for their unwavering support and shared that this one month orientation period is a profound transformation of their sons and daughters from civilian to midshipman.

"This is the trial of the fittest, a moment to demonstrate your readiness to uphold the honor of this institution," Capt. Ladica said.

He also inspired them to accomplish and survive the month-long orientation training.

"Tandaan probies, there's only one way out of the academy, and that is to graduate," he added.

The orientation period is a one-month indoctrination course where probationary midshipmen are quartered at the PMMA compound for the entire period. They are isolated from their families and friends and prohibited from entertaining visitors, following a hectic military schedule.

TAGAYTAY CITY โ€“ In a display of lightning-fast kicks and determination, MIDN/4CL Abi Ace Wangag secured the gold medal for the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) in the navy low kick senior male (60.1 kg to 63.5 kg) category at the Philippine ROTC Games held at the Tagaytay Combat Sports Center, August 2.

The championship bout saw Wangag face-off against a formidable opponent from the Philippine Merchant Marine School.

Wangag's relentless training and unwavering support from his team proved to be the decisive factors in the match.

"Kada laban, iniisip ko palagi na โ€˜yung mga training na pinagdaanan ko at โ€˜yung mga taong naniniwala saโ€™kin," Wangag shared in a post-match interview.

Wangag's journey to the finals was equally impressive, as he powered through the semifinals, defeating a contender from Northwestern University with a series of well-placed kicks and strategic maneuvers.

โ€œAng pinaka-naging advantage ko sa laban ay ang aking dedikasyon sa training at ang suporta mula sa aking team,โ€ Wangag added.

The Philippine ROTC Games is an annual showcase of athleticism and leadership among ROTC units from various higher educational institutions.

A year ago, I remember
Walking past the blue arch,
With bags full of hope and wonder;
Together, we embarked.

It was not easy,
Sometimes the sail gets stormy.
Others did not make it,
But some of us lived to tell the story.

A year ago, we endured.
Physical trainings, and academic pressure;
I know that there is more to come,
But as one, I know we will overcome.

Who would have thought?
Last year, this day was notโ€”
Imaginable.
I never thought this would be possible.

A year ago, we were probies
Then 4th class, we were newbies.
And as we step forth to another year,
I hope we continuously grow and persevere.

Join us, as we celebrate
The journey, and friends we made;
The conviction and dedication,
On last year's reception.

SAN NARCISO, Zambales โ€“ Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line (CCL) said that the company's commitment to expanding its operations leads to the employment of thousands of seafarers.

"We have big plans for the Philippines, whether it is in recruiting more seafarers but more importantly to create better jobs and more leadership opportunities on our ships,โ€ said Duffy in her message during the 201st Commencement Exercises of PMMA MANDAGAYAN Class of 2024, July 30.

There is a hope, as expressed by Duffy, to see Filipino captains and chief engineers at the helm of CCL ships in the future.

"I know how important Filipino Seafarers are, not only to our company but to the entire maritime industry," she added.

Duffy stated that CCL is dedicated to offering Filipinos a range of opportunities. The company operates seven brands under Carnival Corporation, which together employ over 50,000 Filipino seafarers, underscoring the commitment to providing numerous opportunities for all.

CCL is making concerted efforts to ensure that their shipboard teams, especially in senior and officer roles, reflect the diversity of their global workforce, which includes 120 nationalities.

In addition to opening a new employee center in Manila, CCL is dedicated to continuing to build its Filipino employee base, making it easier and more efficient for employees to prepare for their contracts.

Moreover, the company has launched a scholarship program in partnership with PMMA to support these endeavors.

โ€œStarting with the next incoming class, we will be providing 20 incoming freshman students with their uniform allowance and a $700 per student scholarship each year," said Duffy.

Duffy added the companyโ€™s desire to attract top talent to maritime careers in the passenger cruise industry, envisioning a future where leadership roles in deck, engine, and hotel operations are filled by skilled Filipino seafarers.

CCL operates 27 ships, serving nearly 6 million guests each year. The company employs over 12,000 Filipinos, making up more than a quarter of its shipboard workforce.
