Truth Courier is represented by its biggest delegation of 20 young journalists competing for News Broadcast Production, Short-Vertical Form Video, and Social Media Page competition.

YJPFC III gathers young journalists across region III composed of more than 30 student publications from different universities and colleges.

𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | LCUP 2024 Fiesta: The Celebration of Feasts and Promotion of Bond Beyond the Workplace

La Consolacion University Philippines conducted the LCUP 2024 Fiesta in Celebration of the Feasts of St. Augustine and St. Monica on August 27, 2024, at the Kalinangan Auditorium, LCUP Main Campus, with different personnel, professors, and administrators as its attendees.

The program officially started at 8 in the morning with the opening remarks of the university president, Sr. Niceta M. Vargas, OSA. The first half of the day held the LCUP family day program, which featured a karaoke challenge participated by multiple faculty and personnel from different departments. While the competition was taking place, the hosts also led a trivia game that revolved around the lives of St. Augustine and St. Monica.

At the end of the competition, six participants emerged victorious and were awarded by the current Hermano and Hermana Mayors, Dr. Joseph Espino, Dean of the College of Information Technology and Engineering (CITE), and Dr. Olive Almario, Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE).

The second half of the day was started with a talk led by Fray Fredrick Commendador, OSA, about the Augustinian Spirituality that specifically tackled the topic of Augustinian friendship and building a community of friends.

“The importance of this event is actually about community life—building community. Kasi di’ba the theme of this year is sustaining and maintaining the community of friends, and that is very Augustinian, and that is why mayroong ganitong celebration ang personnel. Para hindi lang personnel, hindi lang workmate ang relation kung hindi family, family of Augustinian workers." answered Mr. Jose Paulo Espinosa, the Director of Integral Evangelization Program, when asked about the importance of the event.

The function ended with a feast day mass in honor of St. Augustine and St. Monica. Accordingly, Dr. Joseph Erol T. Cuevas, the Dean of the College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP), and Dr. Fe Corazon Villanueva, the Dean of the College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management (CITHM), were proclaimed as the Hermano and Hermana Mayors of the year 2025.

The office of the student publication is inviting all party lists, candidates, and aspiring student leaders running their names for the upcoming Student Coordinating Board - Collegiate Council (SCB-CC) Election to join the Editorial Board for an interview about their platforms, vision, leadership perspectives, and advocacies planned for the betterment of fellow Consolanians this School Year 2024-2025.

This invitation is NOT MANDATORY. However, in pursuit of leadership transparency, Consolanians will appreciate leaders who show up and walk their talk. The door of our office will be available starting this September 2, and will welcome candidates until September 4. Student leaders can email the student publication team for further information and other concern of agendas.

𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗢𝗡 | The Fantasy of NEDA: 64 pesos not ‘food poor’

Seriously, P64 for three-meal in an entire day for one Filipino is not ‘food poor’? Last Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the Development Budget Coordination Committee’s (DBCC) briefing at the Senate, Senator Nancy Binay asked Secretary Arsenio Balisacan of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) what the threshold was for food poverty.

NEDA’s answer was P64, which would cost P21.3 per meal which has been increased since 2021 which was P55 a day. Balisacan also stated that this threshold hasn't changed much. However, Senator Poe did not buy this statement of NEDA.

"When you compute poverty thresholds with an old number which is not, obviously not workable anymore, P20 per meal, hindi totoo yung poverty forecast niyo (your poverty forecast is not true),” Senator Poe said.

During the briefing, Senator Binay said that this threshold does not match the people’s need to get through the minimum necessities. Hence, NEDA Secretary Balisacan even admitted that their poverty forecast of ‘P64 a day is enough to cover three meals’ is quite outdated and needed to be revisited. Balisacan also acknowledges that the high rice inflation alone takes up most of what you can get with P64 for an entire day. However, Balisacan stated that their numbers are not the same with the other government agencies that measure the poverty threshold such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)

Still, to think that P64 is not ‘food poor’ for an individual’s food in an entire day is absolutely ridiculous. Sure, it is possible to cover an entire day’s meal but that is definitely ‘food poor’. Wake up, it’s already 2024.

Let’s suppose, a person buys a half kilo of rice ranging about P25 - P30, that leaves them P34. What can they get for that amount? Four eggs may cost P32 if each one costs P8, canned sardines cost P26 - P28, and others such as processed food that can be bought by retailing. However, the biggest question is what about the nutritional value a person can have by having such low-quality food? Mind you, the drinking water is not even included yet. Even the on-the-go kind of food such as biscuit crackers costs P8 up to P10, that already takes up 15% of the P64.

Food is our main source of energy and our most important need. In this state of rapid inflation where prices had significantly increased, P64 is not even merely enough to have a decent single meal. Again, in some people’s cases P64 might be enough for them to get through the day, but it is definitely ‘food poor’. To say that such a small cost would be not ‘food poor’ mirrors the economy we’re in—unhealthy.

𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | LCUP Opens the Gates for School Year 2024-2025; Conducts its Annual Institutional Orientation

Consolanians from the college department returned to the school grounds of La Consolacion University Philippines to kickstart the brand new school year 2024-2025, conducting its annual institutional orientation on the day of August 19, 2024. All university resources and offices were present to orient the students about the different policies, information, and school particulars that the students should need to know to maximize their consolanian experience for the upcoming school year.

The institutional orientation was divided into two sessions, both spearheaded by the university president, Sister Niceta M. Vargas, OSA, PhD, who welcomed the students for the new academic year to come. The morning session was composed of 1st - 4th year students from College of Arts, Science, and Education (CASE) and College of Allied Medical Professions (CAMP). The afternoon session was then joined by consolanians from College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management (CITHM), College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy (CBEA), and College of Information, Technology and Engineering (CITE).

During the orientation, the Office of the Integral Evangelization Program (IEP), represented by its director, Mr. Jose Paulo Espinosa, also highlighted the importance of the university’s mission, vision, and core values in producing not just academic competent learners but also moral and rightful individuals.

“The mission, vision, and core values of the institution should not be memorized, but should be embodied by each of you,” Mr. Espinosa said. “We are not just honing you to be good in technicals and academics, but also in your character,” he continued.

The institutional orientation marks the start of another year for the university. Departmental orientation will be conducted the following day, while starting the regular classes of the students on August 21, 2024, Wednesday.

The history began when a small settlement of fishermen lived along the coast of Manila Bay before the coming of the Spaniards. Later on, these settlers became farmers after moving inwards as they discovered that the land in the interior part was fertile and very much drained by the network of rivers and streams. These settlers grew and flourished into a large and prosperous settlement now known as the province of Bulacan.
