We have taken note of the recent statements from the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressing concerns about the joint maritime cooperative activities conducted by the Philippines and the United States in the West Philippine Sea. The Chinese spokesman referred to these activities as "provocative military activities" and deemed them as “irresponsible."

We wish to clarify that the joint maritime activities between the Philippines and the United States were clearly conducted within our exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and are consistent with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), so how can they be deemed provocative?

The Philippines is merely exercising its sovereign right to engage in such activities within its territory and these exercises are aimed at enhancing our maritime capabilities and interoperability with the US which is a treaty partner to ensure the security and stability of the region. The joint patrol emphasizes our ability to work seamlessly together to ensure the readiness of our joint forces to address evolving security challenges.

Our joint patrols with the United States and potential future activities with other allied countries shows our mutual commitment to a rules-based international order and for promoting peace and stability of the region.
It also demonstrates the significant improvement in the Philippine's defense capabilities and the development of a world-class navy and armed forces capable of carrying out its mandate to defend the territorial integrity of the Philippines and our maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea.

The Philippines remains open to diplomatic discussions with China and reaffirms its commitment to fostering good relations with all nations. We believe that through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law, we can achieve a resolution that serves the best interests of all parties involved in the region. # # #

In 1912, the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) was established.

The first ROTC unit was born with the establishment of the Department of Military Science and Tactics at the University of the Philippines in July 3, 1922. And it only became mandatory after 13 years when President Manuel Quezon signed Commonwealth Act 1, also known as the National Defense Act of 1935.

It was disbanded and demobilized after the World War II since the country could not afford to keep a large military force without depleting its resources. But later restored in 1967 as a mandatory program by President Ferdinand Marcos, who was a product of ROTC class 1937 with Executive Order 59.

Since the National Service Training Program Act of 2001 was passed, said program was no longer a mandatory but an optional program for the college students.

JUST IN: Nagpasya ang ABS-CBN Corp. at TV5 Network na huwag ng ituloy ang kanilang investment agreement. Sa kanilang opisyal na pahayag, sinabi ng ABS-CBN at TV5 na napagdesisyunan nila o "mutually agreed to terminate" ang kasunduang merger ng dalawang istasyon.

Magugunita na noong nakaraang linggo, naglabas ng pahayag ang dalawang media network na ipagpapaliban muna ang pag-apruba sa kasunduan upang pagusapan at sagutin ang mga isyu na ipinasasagot sa kanila ng National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) at ng mga mambabatas.
