Today marks the 𝟭𝟲𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗹, and as we celebrate his day, let us all be reminded of how his life and writings have played a vital role in awakening Filipinos' patriotism.

As the Philippines' "National Hero," Rizal's life and works emphasized compassion, justice, and national sovereignty made a lasting impact on the country. His nationalism and dedication to justice have shaped the younger generation, inspiring them to fight for liberty and equity.

𝐄𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐥-𝐀𝐝𝐡𝐚, or "𝑭𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒆," is one of the most important festivals in the Muslim calendar. It includes a ritual of sacrificing animals, which marks this important event as it highlights the obedience of Muslims and their devotion to Allah.

The event stems from a narrative found within the Quran where Ibrahim sacrificed his son as an act of obedience, but God intervened to replace the sacrifice with a lamb. This passage is observed and celebrated by Muslims as it emphasizes the act of submission and devotion to God.

The celebration unites the Muslims at the mosque to pray in gratitude to Allah. In honor of this, they share a feast with family, relatives, friends, and the less fortunate. This observance of tradition holds profound religious importance and has been respected and recognized as a 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟮 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟵𝟴𝟰𝟵 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗹-𝗔𝗱𝗵𝗮.

𝗨𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲
𝘣𝘺 𝘌𝘴𝘮𝘦𝘭

I come to work early in the morning and continue until midnight. I work hard at what I love to do because I want for my children to have a better future. Our everyday expenses surpass my income. Despite the difficulty of this job, I am driven by the hope of giving my children opportunities I never had.

Being a good father and provider is challenging yet fulfilling, especially when they are doing well. They were exceptional at their university, had a solid reputation, and frequently won awards for their academic endeavors.

Yet, some children may forget their parents entirely after completing their studies. It’s as if they’ve tossed away the very ones who sacrificed everything for them.

I clearly remember the first time they failed to celebrate my birthday. I celebrated by myself in my humble house. I am aware that their regular responsibilities may be keeping them extremely busy. Still, my affection and understanding for them have never faded.

They always exclaim, “You are so dummy,” whenever I say something they don't like.

“You haven't finished anything. You have no right to interfere in my life!” was the phrase that most profoundly affected me when my oldest said it. I still feel like my life is ending when I hear those words.

I enjoy thinking back to the times when, despite feeling worn out from working all day, I still make their favorite meals and get their uniforms ready. Because I find it upsetting to witness their struggles. I hate witnessing their pain. Doing them a good turn makes me happy.

I'm no longer aware of the positive events in my children's lives now that they have grown and have their own priorities set. I miss those moments when, despite certain difficulties in our lives, we were satisfied and eager to share endless stories about the wonderful things that had occurred.

Have I done enough as a father?

The reality that they have achieved their dreams, which they used to tell me about as kids, makes me proud.

“My job is the one thing you are unaware of. For twenty years, I endured chronic back pain while working as a taxi driver. I don't want you to know this since I don't want you to feel awkward around your peers. I continue to drive cabs for a living as of this moment. All I want is for you to accept me as your only genuine father—a father who understands the depth of my love for you—before I pass away. I hope you feel my love is all-consuming and selfless.”

I kept this letter I wrote for them today—hidden, as I fight cancer here in the hospital.

𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐛𝐨𝐠 𝐧𝐚 𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐧

𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 | 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤: 𝐋𝐒𝐏𝐔-𝐋𝐁𝐂 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫

Nothing truly cares more than a person who ensures that you eat right, get the necessary nutrition for your body and will value your convenience. This is where both new owners Edna Harlan (53), a vegetable supplier, and Olga Manuel (73), a nutritionist and dietitian, established their food care when they decided to do a makeover to the old canteen of Laguna State Polytechnic University–Los Baños Campus (LSPU-LBC). From a dream that started from two people with food enthusiasm into a reality that will feed thousands of the campus’ populations.

After six months of preparation and renovation, they were able to have a soft opening just last Monday, May 20. The soft opening was to determine and navigate procedures, processes and accommodation that will serve every student, faculty members and staff before their grand opening on June 1.

Fresh, clean and cozy is the new look of the renewed canteen. Dining area with a 60 sitting capacity surrounded by plants that helps with the air flow, clean kitchen and comfort room for crews for a better workflow, segregated boxes for proper waste management, and free drinkable water supply for the customers are just the few ways Edna and Olga prioritize the comfort of their associates and subordinates.

Aside from a new ambiance there’s also a set of menus that will satisfy the taste buds of their consumers. Many variations are present, one dish for pork, chicken and fish, while there are three dishes for vegetables. As a nutritionist and the one who cooks, Ms. Olga ensured that their foods are not just nutritious, but also delicious. While Ms. Edna is in charge with the supplies, making certain that the meats are not frozen but fresh.

Given that they will handle a large population, they came up with strategies that will accommodate everyone. They worked on their takeout counter, serving food for people who’re in a hurry and in case it gets crowded. Satellites—food stalls that are located at distant departments—are also considered and will be operated by hired student assistants.

Despite their initial progress, they’ve encountered challenges during the renovation. There was a time that they had to spend more than the allotted budget because the place needs a lot of improvements. Dealing with renovation workers has not been easy; there were incidents of scams and agreements not being met. And so, they had to intervene and take part in the process themselves, doing tasks like painting and cementing.

Edna and Olga are not just focused in the present; they also have aspirations for the future. The canteen will undergo further upgrades by adding food stalls and variations inside such as vending machines, baked goods, and steamed food products.

It’s true that food services require meticulous effort and attention. With the collaboration of Edna and Olga, they hope to be able to cater the needs and tastes of thousands of the campus’ populations with a welcoming atmosphere, nutritious food and accommodating services.

Gender and Development (GAD) Unit of Laguna State Polytechnic University-Los Baños Campus (LSPU-LBC) organized a seminar themed: “Breaking Stereotypes: Navigating Gender Dynamics in Contemporary Society” at the university’s Lacson Gymnasium, May 24.

Karen Lagat Mercado, the speaker of the event and the Gender and Development Officer (GAD) of the Municipality of Los Baños, delivered a lecture in support of making the students aware of gender discrimination and fostering a more inclusive and respectful campus environment.

During the discussion, Mercado emphasized the importance of applying learned principles to combat gender discrimination and foster respect among students.

“Ang gusto lang natin is mai-apply talaga yung learning and maging open lalo and accepting yung campus natin sa diversity at sana mailagay sa plano na sinasabi nga, huwag natin ikakahon yung s*x sa one particular activities kada lugar,” she stated.

Moreover, she expressed her hope that students who experienced discrimination would feel safe as they would know that national laws exist against gender discrimination.

Cristine Buarao, a third-year student from Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), majoring in English, and one of the attendees, said that she felt recognized and had a great experience upon joining the seminar.

Dito sa seminar, they also tackled about na tayo, we can break down the harmful stereotypes. Instead [of stereotyping], we should empower individuals for their unique qualities. Sa pagiging aware sa mga ganitong sitwasyon, isa itong hakbang to achieve and create a society that is fair and inclusive,” she added.
