Flora: Torch ginger/Philippine wax flower (Etlingera elatior)

E.elatior is a herbaceous clumping plant used in culinary, for medicinal purposes, as an antibacterial agent and for ornamental and floral arrangement purposes. It is native to Malaysia and Indonesia and is affectionately known as "Bunga Kantan". Torch ginger can be propagated sexually (seeds) and asexually (rhizomes).

The rhizome, leaf and inflorescence of torch ginger have been traditionally used as condiment and medicine (Chan et al. 2011). Torch ginger is an aromatic plant, thus works on extracting its essential oil from different parts of plant (rhizome, leaf and inflorescence) and its phytochemistry and pharmacological properties have been extensively studied (Abdelmageed et al. 2011; Abdelwahab et al. 2010; Jackie et al. 2011; Lachumy et al. 2010; Mohamad et al. 2005).

Love and gratitude, Miss Cecile De la Cruz🫶🏻💕🍄 for sharing this.
False Parasol (Chlorophyllum molybdite)
Note: Fungi are neither plants nor animals but rather organisms that form their own kingdom of life. 😁 But we think this is worth sharing 🙌🏻

Location: In the small lawn between the basketball and volleyball courts

After the rain comes
little wonders from the earth,
fragile but deadly.

Clusters of mushrooms, some forming a small semi-circle, have sprouted on campus thanks to almost a week's worth of rain showers. However, as delicate as they look, they are actually the deadly false parasol or chlorophyllum molybdite.

The toxin produced by C. molybdites is a gastrointestinal irritant capable of producing severe symptoms when ingested. The toxin is present in all the structures and stages of the mushroom, but its concentration is higher in the cap and lower in the stem, gills, and spores. Lab studies show that the toxin can affect humans, dogs, chickens, and mice (Eilers & Nelson, 1974). Symptoms are evident 1 to 2 hours after consumption. These symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of fluids and electrolytes (Blayney et al. 1980).

Konnichiwa! 😀🌸 Let’s learn about Assumption Iloilo’s Flora and Fauna 💐🌱🌿First on the list, Cherry Blossom, Pinoy version 😁
Flora 1: Palawan Cherry (Cassia nodosa)
Locally known as Balayong

Location: near the old building (Finance and Admissions offices)

‘One botanist claims that Palawan Cherry is Cassia nodosa and is prehistorically just introduced to Palawan from Java. However, another botanist says that it is a hybrid between two or more species and thus calls it Cassia x Palawan Cherry. Although it appears to be similar to cherry blossom, Palawan cherry is said not closely related to Japanese cherry blossom but to some legumes like acacia. Palawan has a native Cherry Blossom but not as showy as the japanese Cherry Blossom.’
