Budoy Marabiles is not a Dumagueteรฑo, but he fits right in.
Initially just passing through, the former Pinoy Big Brother housemate became attracted to Dumagueteโs charm, and soon established a place for himself in the city.
The frontman of Cebu-based reggae band Junior Kilat agreed to meet with Andana Lifestyle for an interview despite only returning from a gig yesterday. Novemberโs been a busy month for the artists; he supplied live, electronic music for a performance artist in Dumaguete, and spent a couple of days in Cebu for a gig with other local bands.
Dressed in a statement tee (made by a friend of his) with a beanie to match, Marabiles stands out in the crowded coffee shop. It is rare to see him in a Starbucksโand watch him be still.
๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ ๐๐ถ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐น๐ฒ: Youโre a man of many talents; a painter, manager/bartender at Dub Lounge, actor and television show host for a time, and a musician. Is there anything else you want to become next?
๐๐๐ฑ๐ผ๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐: Iโm not sure what I want to do in the future, because I prefer to go with the flowโwhere the road takes me. For now, Iโm going to focus on my passions. I have a scheduled solo exhibit at Mugna around June or August, so I should be busy painting soon.
๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ: What makes the โBudoyโ in Junior Kilat different from the โBudoyโ that does solo projects, and the โBudoyโ that does art?
๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐: Itโs hard to explain. The process is different, but itโs always exciting and challenging. My process evolves. I can never stay put; I am always ready to explore more genres and techniques. My inspiration comes whenever I have an experience. With art, these experiences are translated visually. For one piece, I took inspiration from seeing so many animals in Moalboalโthe details come later. It happens everywhere.
๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ: Youโve lived in many places; Samar, where youโre from; Cebu for a long time, and Manila when you were on Pinoy Big Brother. Now, youโre in Dumaguete. Why have you settled in the city of gentle people?
๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐: Iโm not really โsettlingโ in Dumaguete. I wanted to get away from the big city life. Here, itโs not polluted, itโs easy to get around... the only downside to Dumagueteโto any small town, reallyโis that chismis travels fast. Back in the big cities, nobody really cared. Hereโฆ (laughs). But for now, Dumaguete is my studio. Before Iโm ready to share my work with the rest of the world, I share it here.
๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ: While youโre working on music, do you listen to this generationโs pop artists? Ones on the Billboard Hot 100?
๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐: I donโt really listen to new musicโnot because I donโt like it, but because Iโm doing a lot of research on a specific genre. I recently just discovered Doja Cat. I was scrolling through Facebook when I heard her for the first time. I thought she was new, turns out sheโs been making music for years.
๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ: What should we expect from you for the rest of this year and the next?
๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐: Not so much this year anymore, but next year definitely. Iโm actually collaborating with a friend with a performance art group in the US. Itโs a project proposal for the Burning Man Festival. Other than that, I have my electronic and techno musicโwhich is under BudoyX. Oh, and that solo exhibit at Mugna.
๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฎ: After Dumaguete, where are you going next?
๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐: I donโt know, but I am going with the flow. Wherever my passion takes me, Iโm there.
