Their journey has led them to this exact moment; it is their time to show everyone their resolve to embrace the call of becoming the new generation of compassionate nurses who will cultivate a new future of care. With steadfast determination, the soon-to-be student nurses displayed strides of confidence on the aisle of the Redemptorist Church as they each made their way to their seats. With their lamps in hand, anticipation filled the faces of each student as they felt the air of celebration. It is the day that they have been waiting for.

The 40th Badging and Capping Ceremony officially commenced with a solemn mass officiated by Monsignor Tajanlangit. The venerable priest instilled in the hearts and minds of the student nurses that nursing is not only a profession but also a medium of love—a love that encompasses all. The student nurses reminisced back to their first year as the priest’s message reminded them of the words that every clinical instructor would say time and time again to new and aspiring student nurses: “Nursing is a calling; it is a vocation dedicated to the service of healing.” As the final notes of the choir resonated through the church halls, the monsignor took the time to remind the batch to persevere despite the challenges and to use these as stepping stones for growth and continued resiliency.

With the ceremonial lamp now lit, the caps ready, and the badges lined up, the most anticipated part of the ceremony has now started. A sense of solidarity began to set in the minds of the student nurses as the names of each candidate were called on stage to receive their caps and badges. They took the chance to reflect back on their experiences. Every grueling lecture, every sleepless night, and every nerve-wracking return demonstration—despite it all, they have arrived at this day where they will now become full-fledged student nurses.

The ceremony reached its grand conclusion as the batch lined themselves up for the presentation of their song ‘The Future Awaits’. The student nurses harmonized in a wonderful medley as they each sang with heartfelt emotion. With each melody and note, they shined just as brightly as the stars. It was crystal clear to everyone that this song is not only music. It is their testament to becoming the healers and dreamers who will make a change for the better.

Wreathed in smiles, the student nurses then proudly raised their lamps, each flame representing their unwavering spirit and the oath they took on this day to accept the challenges that lay ahead as they take on this new stage in their career path. It is their first step towards greatness, and they will not back down no matter what hardships they may face ahead.

Cebu Normal University - College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNU-CNAHS) celebrated a significant milestone during the 40th Cap and Badge Investiture and Candle Lighting Ceremonies for Batch Arvensis: Class of 2027. The event took place in the morning of August 16, 2024, at the Our Mother of Perpetual Health - Redemptorist Church.

The ceremony began with a procession featuring the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Class of 2027, faculty members, guests, administrative officials, and the keynote speaker. This was followed by a Eucharistic celebration officiated by Msgr. Joseph Tajanlangit, setting a reverent tone for the momentous occasion.

As the 76 aspiring student nurses embark on their journey, celebrating growth, resilience and achievements, Dr. Laurence L. Garcia, Dean of CNU-CNAHS, presented them to the CNU Vice President for Academic Affairs and Internationalization, Dr. Joseph Elvir Tubilan, who represented Dr. Daniel A. Ariaso Sr., SUC President III. Dr. Tubilan accepted the candidates on behalf of the university.

The Installation of Caps and Badges proceeded with the participation of chief nurses from CNU's affiliated medical institutions. Among those present were Nurse Marx Franco S. Valencia, Chief Nurse of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, represented by Dr. Daisy R. Palompon, Nurse Niña Villamor, Chief Nurse of Cebu City Medical Center, Dr. Joriah Lydia G. Langga, Chief Nurse of Saint Anthony Mother and Child Hospital, Nurse Harby O. Abellanosa, Chief Nurse of Cebu South Medical Center, Nurse Rasil Polestico, Chief Nurse of Cebu Puericulture And Maternity House Inc, and Nurse Celedonia M. Bienes, Vice President for Nursing of Chong Hua Hospital, represented by Dr. Jezyl Cutamora.

The ceremony was further enriched by an inspirational message delivered by the esteemed guest speaker, Dr. Rozzano C. Locsin, a Nursing Theorist, Professor Emeritus of Tokushima University and Florida Atlantic University, and a Transcultural Nursing Scholar.

Dr. Locsin started his talk by enunciating the importance of knowledgeable practice in the nursing profession, stating, “Knowing is what nursing is all about.”

“You have to focus on what it is you know about the person you are nursing. That’s why we study—not because we want to be number one, but because of who the person we want to nurse is. That should be our motivation," he stated, underscoring the participatory nature of nursing practice that involves co-creating possibilities to facilitate care. “Nursing is participatory care; it is not doing for the person, it is doing with,” he added.

“We have to know what we are doing, why we’re doing it, and for whom,” Dr. Locsin stated, focusing on how nurses should ask themselves first how they can be significant in attaining, sustaining, and maintaining the health of the person, making the person live a life that is meaningful to the person.

He also reminded the aspiring nurses, "it is the person nursed who is the reason for our being and becoming," and encouraged them to embrace the role of healers while also acknowledging their own vulnerabilities as "wounded healers.”

Following Dr. Locsin’s speech, Mr. Jake Cañeda, the Level 2-B adviser, led the Nurses’ Prayer, fostering a moment of reflection and solidarity among attendees. This solemn observance gracefully transitioned into a vibrant display of talent, as Batch 2027 took center stage to deliver a captivating performance of their original song, "The Future Awaits."

The ceremony culminated with the singing of the University Hymn led by the CNU Chorale, a unifying moment for all in attendance. To capture the memories of this special day, a photo opportunity followed, allowing the graduates and their loved ones to cherish the occasion. The recessional then concluded the whole ceremony.

The 40th Cap & Badge Investiture and Candle Lighting Ceremony was a testament to the dedication, hard work, and resilience of BSN Batch 2027. As they embark on their nursing careers, they carry with them the knowledge, skills, and values instilled by CNU-CNAHS, ready to make a positive impact on the lives of their patients and communities.

The Cebu Normal University - College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) officially commenced the academic year with its traditional welcoming event on August 12, 2024. Held at Tandang Sora Hall, La Bienvenida: Grand Balik-Skwela Fiesta 2024 brought together new and returning nursing students, warmly welcoming them into the department.

The event, organized by the Nightingale Student Council (NSC), featured a series of orientations and activities designed to foster school spirit among the Nightingales. Students were first greeted by the vibrant booths creatively set up by the college’s student organizations outside Tandang Sora Hall. These booths, representing organizations such as the Red Cross Youth, Tech Team, and The Viewpoint, were adorned with eye-catching decorations aimed at drawing in potential recruits. The lively setup provided students with an opportunity to explore different extracurricular activities, fostering a sense of community and encouraging involvement in campus life. The organizations’ efforts to engage with new and returning students added an extra layer of excitement to the annual welcoming event.

The day officially began with the CNAHS General and By-Subject Orientation, a hallmark event that marks another year of academic pursuit and professional growth for the students. The orientation opened with warm remarks from the department’s new Dean, Dr. Laurence Garcia, who introduced the administrative officials, department heads, and CNAHS faculty to the assembled students.

The orientation continued with Program Chair Mr. Esperidion Corvera, who outlined the Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives (VMGO), Quality Policy, and Outcomes-Based Education (OBE). RLE Chair Mrs. Hazel Cañeda provided guidelines on Related Learning Experience (RLE) and Laboratory Policies, focusing on proper conduct and equipment usage. This was followed by a Data Privacy Orientation led by Data Protection Officer Mr. Omar Roma. The morning session concluded with year-level By-Subject orientations held in their respective classrooms.

The afternoon event featured a series of lively student-led performances and interactive activities. This segment included talent showcases, introductions to the student council and other CNAHS organizations, as well as previews of upcoming events such as the Intramurals. These activities aimed to engage students and encourage participation in campus life beyond academics for a holistic experience.

In addition to the performances and introductions, the event included entertaining games and important updates from the NSC, who provided insights into upcoming initiatives and events planned for the academic year, further building excitement among the students.

To conclude La Bienvenida, the upperclassmen warmly welcomed the freshmen with a traditional welcoming ceremony. The Grand Balik-Skwela 2024 was a tremendous success, effectively combining education, entertainment, and community-building, leaving students both informed and motivated. As the event wrapped up, it was evident that the enthusiasm and spirit within the CNAHS community would propel them into a dynamic and fruitful school year.

STUDENT AFFAIRS AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICE, June 10, 2024 — The Cebu Normal University - College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNU-CNAHS) Nightingale Student Council (NSC) pledges to serve their fellow students with integrity and honor. The officers gathered at the university’s SADO wearing their Barong Tagalog and Filipiniana with a green flower pin displaying their commitment to their college. This undertaking was witnessed by the Supreme Student Council (SSC) President, Hon. Ella Nicole Mata, SSC Vice President, Hon. Joenalisa Ruby Rosaroso, and selected officers.

A representative from the CNU U-COMELEC (Cebu Normal University Unified - Commission on Elections) distributed the documents, symbolizing the student’s acceptance of the responsibility while upholding the constitution and system of laws of the university. As every officer signs the oath, the eye of determination is clear. It shows that they are eager to continue to embody competence and deliver quality service and good governance. Truly, this action depicts their acceptance of the duties and functions of being the college’s torchbearers. Dr. Jeson Bustamante, SADO director, commended NSC for their willingness to be of service.

Being a student leader is an immense responsibility one accepts. Upholding the values and principles of the organization, the council aims to assure the student body that quality service is within easy reach. Kudos to these individuals who accepted the call to be student leaders!

𝐀 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐥𝐝

A love that’s grey and old— I want a love like that. A love that nurtures; a love that cares… a love that stays.

We entered this world helpless and alone. We did not know what to do and we were not capable of living on our own. We were helpless and alone.

But were we really alone? No. We were not alone. Because we had them.

Our elders are the wise people of our communities. Having been through the labyrinth we call life, they’ve experienced enough to be the foundations we can lean on. They witnessed our first steps, our pleas and cries in the middle of the night, and more often than not, have become our mentors and path-guiders. They have become our support system, spoiling us whenever they can, and providing us with the warmth that envelopes us every waking hour. And now, it’s our turn to give back.

Nursing is an art of caring through knowledge and compassion. And the faculty and students of Cebu Normal University-College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNU - CNAHS) showed this through the program, “SENIORCARE: Senior Care Giving Short Course Training.” This two-day program was centred on sharing knowledge to the caregivers of the elders in our communities that is rooted in taking care of the aged people in their everyday lives. This was spearheaded by the beloved members of the college namely Dr. Daisy Palompon, Dr. Laurence Garcia, Mr. Jake Cañeda, Mrs. Joana Pananganan, and Mr. Vincent Pananganan. They, along with the training facilitators Level 1 student-volunteers, imparted their skills that involved taking care of the clients.

On the morning of April 12, 2024, at the Golden Center of Cebu Inc., in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City, preparations were made prior to the arrival of the participants. Presentations for the lecture were compiled, performance rubrics sheets were printed, and the anticipation to educate was building up. When the participants arrived, things were settled and the lecture began.

The first to lecture was Dr. Daisy Palompon. With her knowledge in vital signs taking, she thoroughly shared to the participants the importance of getting the temperature and pulse rate of the patient. She also taught them how to use the thermometer, including the necessary hygienic measurements, and count the pulse rate of the client.

The next lecture was about taking the blood pressure and oxygen saturation, which was delivered by Mrs. Joana Pananganan. She discussed to the participants the rationale of how blood pressure can affect our bodies. After that, she demonstrated how to use the pulse oximeter and the digital blood pressure apparatus.

Life was as sweet as Mr. Jake Caneda’s discussion on taking the blood glucose of the clients using a glucometer. This procedure is one of the many procedures that have a mystery embracing it and the clouds were cleared with Sir Jake’s explanation. It was a common misconception that the first blood that will gush out when the finger is pricked is the one to be used for testing. However, he emphasized that it should first be wiped and then the second drop of blood was to be used for testing.

At the end of the first day, a return demonstration was done to assess the skills learned by the participants. They were divided into 5 groups, each having their own clinical instructors and training facilitators.

Mr. Vincent Pananganan headed the discussion on oral medication preparation. He tackled the different types of oral medications, how to prepare syrup oral medications, and how to cut a pill using a pill cutter when necessary. One of the participants asked what should they do if there were debris of the pill when cut. Sir Vincent answered, “Apilon gihapon na ug pagpa-inom sa pasyente kay apil man sa pag kwenta sa dosage. Mao it is best if ang inyong hiposon kay ang limpyo pagka-hiwa.” After the supervised practice, a return demonstration was done to assess the skills learned by the participants. Same as the day before, each group has a program head assigned to them.

Lastly, a scrumptious lecture was cooked by Dr. Laurence Garcia as he discussed the major food groups, what the plate of an elder should contain, and the importance of preparing a well-balanced meal that is both healthy and an eye-catcher. A demonstration by Mr. Sean Domingo was then done as he talked about the precautions the caregivers should be observing amongst themselves when preparing the meals of their elders. To commence the two-day training, a cook-off was done to assess the learnings of the participants with regards to meal preparation. The participants were divided into 4 groups, namely Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snacks. Each group was given ₱200.00 each for their ingredients. The breakfast group chose to cook Fried Fish (2 slices), Stir-Fried Ampalaya with Tomato, Rice, and a Banana. The lunch group chose to do steamed chicken and steamed vegetables and rice, with papaya as their fruit choice. The dinner group opted for Fried Fish, Utan (sayote, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, carrots, onions, and garlic) with chicken, rice, and a medium-sized banana. For the snacks, the group made a clubhouse with tomatoes and lettuce and orange juice as their beverage. Each group had a training facilitator assigned to them.

Nursing is an art of caring through knowledge and compassion. With this in mind, the members of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences have highlighted the importance of community outreach programs to give back the pillars of the society: the people. With SENIORCARE, the elders who have showered us with their wisdom and guidance throughout our lifetime were focused on simply giving back the love that we have received as a child. A love that is giving. A love that is selfless. A love that will last a lifetime…from our waking moments to their grey and old days.
