1 DAY LEFT
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The 2024 Cagayan de Oro Young Writers Studio (CDOYWS) is now open for applications! This yearโs theme is โLiterature: A Means to Freedom and Peace.โ

ON THE THEME
โThe caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.โ
โ Maya Angelou, โCaged Birdโ (1983)
โIn order for me to write poetry that isn't political, I must listen to the birds, and in order to hear the birds, the war planes must be silent.โ โ Marwan Markhoul
Literatureโs role in the historical discourse of freedom and peace has been indispensable. As the world witnesses ongoing struggles of oppressed peoples, writing provides a voice to the voiceless. According to Paulo Freire in the work Pedagogy of the Oppressed, โfreedom is not an ideal located outside of man; nor is it an idea which becomes myth. It is rather the indispensable condition for the quest for human completion.โ
Literature is one of many tools for liberation, as it provides a platform to articulate a plural vision of freedom and ways of nurturing peace: narratives of resistance against tyranny; protagonists' journeys towards self-realization; stories set in counterfactual worlds that prefigure different societies and different ways of practicing liberty and cultivating peace; and the poetic expression of marginalized voices striving for recognition and justice. It can also promote peace through fostering empathy, understanding, and reconciliation. Time and time again, the written word serves as a stalwart against tyrannical forces and unjust power structures.
Through this yearโs theme, we wish to encapsulate the struggle for freedom and peace from the personal to the public. Works that illuminate struggles against oppression, quests for identity and freedom, the pursuit of peace, and related subjects are encouraged.

The CDO Young Writers Studio aims to be a safe space for new ways of writing where emerging writers are engaged in a dialogue of critical discourse and creative practices situated in and shaped by geopolitics and aesthetics of writings from the southern Philippines, and where these same writers are not subjected to a โpromotion of deference and reproduction of hierarchies, but a multiplication of approaches and cultivation of difficult originalityโ (Charlie Samuya Veric, 2017).
The impetus and core purpose of Young Writers Studio, bringing emerging writers together to share their pieces and develop their craft, contributes to the larger goal of enfolding these young writers, many of whom do not have access to creative writing resources, into the larger community of local writers and indie publishers, and the flourishing local literary scene.
