Hello, 2021. Here’s to hoping for more travels this year and the years to come.

This was taken at Jose Karlos in Tacloban City. JK as the locals call it, has been a favorite go-to-place of mine whenever I visit Tacloban.

This is a water reservoir found in the interior of Balangkayan. This mini lake has bluish-green water which does not dry up even during summer season.

It is surrounded by a lush vegetation which makes both the water and the surrounding area cool which is perfect for swimming and relaxation.

I thought I already visited all beaches in Eastern Samar. To my surprise, there is still this beach which had slipped under my radar. I was only able to be aware of its existence through a friend.

Perhaps its secluded location is one factor which made it unfamiliar among beachgoers, myself included. The road going to this place is unpaved but passable by vehicle.

This place is interesting for two of reasons. One is the spectacular mountain cliffs on its western side, the other is the stunning view of the pacific on its eastern side. Added bonus are the swells which I am sure surfers will dig.

Calophyllum Inophyllum, locally called Dangkalan, is a large evergreen plant which can be found in almost all islands in the Philippines and tropical regions.

This Alexandrian Laurel tree can be found at the mouth of an estuary in Bitaugan in Homonhon Island. The tree has grown so huge that it is already branching out towards the water providing a shade in the shallow river.

Doorway to the ocean.

It is like an archway to the vastness of the Pacific Ocean. It looks stunningly beautiful but swimming on the water underneath the archway can be very dangerous. I advise caution because it is deep and the swells are big. One misstep can be fatal as the swells’ current can smash you to the nearby reef.

You can reach this place by dropping off at Barangay Nagja in Hernani then take the foot trail going to Ginduyanan.

You want to dive into rock-pools? Then try visiting Minasangay Island Ecopark and Resort. It offers at least six levels of diving range and it also has cottages on top of rock formations which are perfect for lunch dates.

A platform located on a cliff was constructed to allow visitors to experience a view of the Philippine Sea and the eastern side of Samar island. A lighthouse can be found a few walks away from the platform.

The Local Government of Balangkayan declared the area as protected. Visitors are advised to follow the local regulation.

This is Milan Falls in San Rafael, Taft.

The trek going to the falls is an experience in itself. You will have to traverse a dense forest via foot trail. It will take you around 20 to 30 minutes to reach the falls, that’s how far it is from the highway. But once you get there, you can say that it is worth it.

The area where this falls is located is protected. It covers the last remaining tropical jungle in the whole island of Samar. Officially, it is dubbed as the Samar Island Natural Park. Because of its dense vegetation, this area is a natural sanctuary of the Philippine Eagle and other endangered species endemic to the island.

It is therefore important that we take cognizance of our role as protector of our remaining natural habitat. Let us help in our government’s efforts to preserve these natural wonders.

Arguably, it is rare to find rock formation spots and a long stretch of white sand beach together. However, this spot in Yolanda Beach at Jagnaya, Salcedo has both.

This place is now called Yolanda Beach after its onslaught in the southern portion of Samar Island in 2013. The storm surge it generated was so powerful that it uprooted many coconut trees and mangroves which resulted to the widening of the coastline of this area.

I am thankful that these rocks are not yet vandalized by beach-goers. It is very saddening that many rocks in other areas are vandalized. We should be responsible enough to protect these rocks so that their pristine condition will remain.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) considers rivers, stream and creeks as invaluable for all life on the planet.

Their importance are undeniable throughout the history of the world. Many civilizations sprouted from many riverside such as the Egyptians with Nile, Mesopotamian with Tigris and Euphrates, Chinese with Yangtze. In the Philippines, the early kingdom in Manila was based on the mouth of Pasig River.

Our rivers nowadays are dying. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), in a study, revealed that 180 of 421 rivers and other bodies of water nationwide are heavily polluted that they may soon be declared biologically dead.

Let’s not wait for the time wherein all our rivers will be declared biologically dead.

The lowly coconut is a symbol of the tropical regions. It is a source of livelihood to many people in the developing world most of whom are in the tropics.

According to a 2018 report, the Philippines produced 14.7 million tonnes of coconuts, the second in the world after Indonesia. Despite of this, many coconut farmers in the Philippines remain struggling due to the lower price of copra in the market.

In commemoration of our 122nd Independence Day, let me share with you this photo of Handig Beach in the historical island of Homonhon whom the renowned Italian chronicler Antonio Pigafetta called ‘Waters of Good Signs’.

Unknown to many, this year actually marks the 500th anniversary of Magellan’s landing on Homonhon Island. This successful expedition paved the way for future voyages which subsequently led to our country’s subjugation under Spain.

Locals say that these tiny strips of limestone corals were not visible before and they only appeared after the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda.

Surrounding these broken limestone corals is a fringing reef. Probably, the powerful waves of Yolanda pounded the reef which resulted to the corals breaking apart and eventually accumulated into these tiny strips of corals.

These tiny strips of corals can be seen in the water surrounded by Manicani Island (seen at the foreground), Homonhon Island, Suluan Island and the town of Guiuan.

Homonhon Island in Eastern Samar was where Magellan first set foot on Philippine soil. This idyllic place is of great significance to our history as Magellan’s successful landing on the island served as the precursor to future Spanish expeditions which eventually led to our country’s colonization.

Typical of islands found in tropical regions such as the Philippines, Homonhon is a paradise. As seen in the photo, it has pristine beaches for beach lovers, rugged terrain for mountain climbers, and well-preserved coral reefs for snorklers.

Sadly, the entire island’s beauty and its inhabitant are threatened by the destructive effects of irresponsible mining.

You can visit this historical island via two-hour boat ride from Guiuan, the bustling capital of the southern part of Eastern Samar.

Human na gihap ako mag-bayo.

Samareños and Leyteños know or at least are familiar with the process of pounding rice in making delicacies such as moron, bibingka, p**o and salukara.

Pag-bayo or pounding with the use of wooden wood as pestle and mortar was the main mode of grinding rice long before the advent of machinery.

Hey, where’s my surfboard?

Are you into surfing or skimboarding? You might want to check out Boulevard - a surfing spot located within the city proper of Borongan in Eastern Samar. You read it right, it’s literally located along the city’s boulevard on the east facing the open ocean that is why its location is very ideal.

Notable local and national surfing competitions were held in this surfing spot in the past, the most recent of which was the five-day Philippine Surfing Championship held only last year. These competitions are but a testament of the viability of the city’s long coastline as an alternative spot for surfers and skimboarders.

From Tacloban City take a PUV ride going to Borongan City. You can rent out surfboards from the locals.

Magtanim ay di biro kaya will you support our local farmers?

Looking at our economic output, industry and services contribute much larger than the agricultural sector. This doesn’t mean however that agricultural activity is in decline. Many among us are still employed as farmers and fisherfolks.
