𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗘𝗫𝗛𝗜𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗦 (𝗡𝗜𝗖𝗘)

The 𝗡𝗩𝗦𝗨 𝗦𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻 and 𝗜𝗣𝗧𝗕𝗠 attended the 2024 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) of the Department of Science and Technology – Technology Application and Promotion Institute (𝗗𝗢𝗦𝗧-𝗧𝗔𝗣𝗜), with the theme “𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨," at Manila Ballroom, Mariott Hotel, Newport Boulevard, Pasay City last July 16-18, 2024.

NICE is a biennial activity conducted by the DOST-TAPI to showcase Filipino’s innovative creativity and give due recognition to the hard work and efforts of Filipino inventors, makers, designers, researchers, and students. There are six (6) contest categories in this competition where talented national qualifiers can compete, namely: the Outstanding Invention (𝘛𝘶𝘬𝘭𝘢𝘴 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥), Outstanding Utility Model (𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘢𝘥 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥), Outstanding Industrial Design (𝘉𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘩𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥), Outstanding Creative Research (𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘩𝘢 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥), and Outstanding Student Creative Research (𝘚𝘪𝘣𝘰𝘭 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥) for High School and College students.

The key highlights of the 3-day event included NICE talks from startup owners and investors in the Philippines, pitches from the qualifiers of the different contest categories, and exhibits showcasing their products and technologies. It is a celebration of Filipino creativity and ingenuity and a pivotal moment to reintroduce and rebrand the national innovation showcase.

NVSU Sabatan, represented by Project Leader, Dr. Cristina R. Salvosa, joined the 𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐆 𝐂𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞: 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐎𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 – 𝐀 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫 at Taipei, Taiwan last June 3-8, 2024.

The Synergistic, Innovative, and Agile Cagayan Valley Consortium or SINAG Cagayan Valley Consortium, through the funding support of DOST-PCIEERD under its "HEIRIT-ReSEED: Accelerating the Cagayan Valley Startup Ecosystem" project, is mandated to conduct one benchmarking activity across Asia as part of their key deliverables. Taipei, Taiwan, as one exceptional destination for benchmarking a startup ecosystem due to its multifaceted strengths, was chosen for the said activity. Renowned as a global tech and innovation hub, Taipei offers a diverse landscape for startups to assess their strategies across various sectors. It is home to a vibrant network of innovation hubs, accelerators, and co-working spaces which serve as epicenters of entrepreneurial activity, offering access to mentorship, resources, and investment opportunities.

The SINAG Cagayan Valley Team visited and established collaboration/partnership with selected universities, TBIs accelerators, and fablabs in Taipei. Highlights of the trip included study tours at the Chaoyang University of Technology, National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan Tech Arena, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and Taiwan Startup Stadium Company and meeting with The Mobile Only Accelerator (MOX - Orbit Startups).

They also participated in the InnoVEX 2024 and COMPUTEX 2024 at the Nangang Exhibition Center. As an international business-to-business professional exhibition, COMPUTEX 2024, under the theme of “Connecting AI,” successfully drew world-class buyers to this annual technology industry event, making Taiwan a focal point of global attention. The top ten visitor countries during the four-day event were Japan, the United States, South Korea, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The competition aimed to bring together passionate and aspiring students from 𝐍𝐕𝐒𝐔, 𝐐𝐒𝐔, and 𝐀𝐂 to foster collaboration, creativity, and innovation. 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐏𝐇, the winning team composed of selected students from each university, received a cash prize of 𝐏𝟓,𝟎𝟎𝟎. Their proposed technology focuses on 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘸’𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 through a mobile app called “𝐆𝐎𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐏”. The said app is connected to a device that can detect the nutrients present in the soil called “𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐃”, which stands for Temperature, Moisture, and Humidity.

The Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), represented by Engr. MJ Halili, recently conducted a project monitoring visit at the NVSU Sabatan Technopreneurs Hub last April 5, 2024.

Engr. Halili introduced various programs offered by PCIEERD and provided peer-to-peer coaching to the incubatees, exhibitors, and mentors of Sabatan spearheaded by its manager, Dr. Cristina R. Salvosa.

Day 4: To formally wrap up the Technology Transfer Week, the Sabatan mentors spearheaded a whole day training and workshop dedicated for the young minds of NVSU on March 21.

Mr. Josue A. Chua, CBE Faculty Member, started the day off with his topic on Ideation. Selected students from the College of Business Education (CBE), College of Engineering (COE), and College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) collaborated to participate in the activities prepared for the workshop proper, wherein they observed and reported in groups based on the technologies showcased at the Techno Exhibit Area.

In the afternoon, the training proper was led by the resource speaker, Dr. Sony. P. Aquino, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Officer, with his lecture on IP Education.

Day 3: The excitement of the Technology Transfer Week continued with the Investor’s Day and Signing of Technology Licensing Agreement (TLA), the highlight of this event’s week-long activities.

The said agreement was made and entered into by and among the Nueva Vizcaya State University as represented by its President, Wilfredo A. Dumale Jr., and the Agrizcaya Cooperative Federation as represented by its General Manager, Eden D. Lacar.

With the improved technology “A Process of Making Fish Cream Soup/Composition” of NVSU, the said university hereby grants to the Agrizcaya a non-exclusive and transferable license to adopt, utilize, make, produce, and/or commercialize this technology in the territory of Nueva Vizcaya for a period of three years.

This was made possible by the help of the Department of Science and Technology Region 2 (DOST-R02) through the Fairness Opinion Board (FOB) evaluation to guide in drafting the said TLA.

Day 2: The Technology Transfer Week carried on with its week-long activities through a Fairness Opinion Board Training on its second day.

In the said event, Director for Business Affairs, Dr. Claire R. Reginalde, acknowledged the participants and delivered her welcome message.

The training proper was led by the resource speaker, Engr. Mark Gil Hizon of the Department of Science and Technology Region 2.

Day 1: As part of the 20th Charter Anniversary Celebration of the Nueva Vizcaya State University, the Sabatan Technopreneurs Hub and the Intellectual Property and Technical Business Management (IP-TBM) led the Opening Program of the Technology Transfer Week with the theme “TechXChange: Igniting Innovation, Accelerating Commercialization.” at the New Administration Building on March 18.

Dr. Cristina R. Salvosa, Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF) and Sabatan Manager, thanked the guest speaker in her welcoming remarks while Dr. Wilfredo Dumale Jr. delivered his message and expressed his incessant support of the TBI activities.

Said affair also incorporated the sharing of expertise of the guest speaker, Dr. Juanito T. Batalon, Deputy Executive Director for Research and Development (OED-RD) of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), to help significantly in the success of the technology innovators.

Eventually, a ribbon cutting was held at the New Administration Building Grounds to formally mark the start of the week-long celebration and Techno Exhibit area.

Exciting times ahead as Nueva Vizcaya State University SABATAN and Quirino State University join forces to explore a potential collaboration on a technology business incubation hub!

Today, Mr. Daren S. Erana, the co-project leader of SINAG Cagayan Valley, together with Sabatan's Project Management Team, Ms. Cherrie Prelle D. Pascual, the Business and Promotion Advisor and Ms. Noemi Binuhi, Project Staff, had a productive meeting with team QSU.

SINAG Cagayan Valley, which stands for Synergistic, Innovative, and Agile Cagayan Valley, is a regional consortium of TBIs, academe, various government agencies, and the industry. Together, we aim to build and strengthen the startup ecosystem in Region 02.
