Photography with a mobile phone:
The story of my engagement with photojournalism happened in the early eighties by accident. Literally, there was a vehicular accident near our place and I happened to be there with a camera. I took few shots of the mishap and since I knew how to process black and white films and develop its images into paper inside a makeshift darkroom, my instinct dictated that the next thing to do is to bring it to a news publication office.
And so it landed on the front page of the Gold Ore attributed to my artist name Artibal.
That’s how I was able to start my portfolio in Photography as I narrated during my lecture in today’s seminar-workshop on Mobile Photography with DSWD field staff at the Pooten Resort in Tuba, Benguet. 12.20.23

My documentation on the Tragic Little Kibungan Landslide at the height of the 2009 Typhoon Pepeng

WARNING!, This is not for the faint hearted - I am re-posting my 2009 coverage of Typhoon Pepeng for whatever it is worth and for study purposes especially on climate change and adaptive measures. Likewise, I am including the recovered exchanges of views and comments in my old social media account at www.multiply.com that was re-purposed into a marketing site. I used multiply when Facebook was not yet widely used by netizens all over.

(Note: I am doing a thesis work on Balili River and any comments and suggestions shared here may be used in my study. Any suggestions on how to help protect the residents from similar disasters, care for the rivers etc will be highly appreciated. Thanks! Art)

Me (cordilleranews): There's a time for every season, a time to plant and a time to harvest, a time to laugh and a time to cry, a time to throw stones and a time to gather stones together. Lord, give us the strength so that we can face all these challenges in life.
You may copy and use any of these photos but kindly acknowledge source-Art Tibaldo

Me: Can you spot the possible culprit or reason why this sleepy Little Kibungan was practically wiped out at the height of Typhoon Pepeng? Look closer to the far left portion of the first image as pointed by the red arrow just above or beside the mid portion of the S-shaped road where an oval shaped dugout is visible. This is a clear manifestation...

Just had our flag ceremony and each of us has tragic story to tell but God is good, no untoward happened and we are in the comfort of our families. Two groups were stranded and slept for two nights along the interior towns of Benguet. One group walked for five hours on risky mountain slopes and the other even left behind their soiled shoes and heavy personal effects....twas indeed an experience to all of us and my RD almost shed a tear earlier.. Let's have more reminiscing over a bottle of beer sometime bro!

bakit d nila nakunan ang bugayan???? to think na halos malapit lang ito sa bahay ni mayor galwan... I still have to inquire about Bugayan but what you might be referring is Buyagan. Yes Buyaganis a growing business area in La Trinidad and part of it especially along the Pico area was submerged and muddied as seen in some pic here. Buyagan became a busy street lately because of the search and rescue triage and the Puguis Elementrary school that became a mortuary, a chapel and evacuation area. Help from all over poured in and this also showed the strength of our being Pinoys.

delfindemot said To All: Baguio, Benguet and the rest of Cordillera had this unexpected rebound of Typhoon Pepeng with lost of lives and properties whereas we understand as per PAGASA report that it should exit monday October 5. Civic organizations here such as Rotary Clubs have channelled the donations to Botolan, Zambales and other areas affected earlier by Storm Ondoy.

The presidents of the eight (8) Rotary clubs of Cluster 1C of District 3790 had emergency meeting as called-for by PDG Mark Go and they agreed that all club members shell out an equivalent of one meal or at least Php 250.00 each and immediately we were able to collect sufficient amount; so last saturday 10/10/2009 we did the marketing and packing of food items for distribution at Puguis Elementary School Center in the morning and at Emilio Aguinaldo Elem School Center in the afternoon. There were used clothings and at least 200 brand-new blankets donated by members. There were 200 pcs food packages costing @239.80 each consisting of 2 kilos rice, 2 big sized canned sardines, 2 bottled water, 2 soups, packed crackers. We understand that food is immediate and so we addressed this need. Also blanket is on time especially for those with baby or babies.

With the Cluster 1-C Assistant Governor and other members, we distributed 150 food packs of relief goods at E. Aguinaldo Elem School Center where some residents of submerged City Camp Lagoon stayed. Distributed @1 family unit each and in orderly manner because there's a roll call list already prepared by the barangay staff in charge and duplication was avoided. We prioritized giving the blankets also to those mothers with babies.

Meanwhile, I received a text message from Gov. Oyan, to wit: "From Gov Oyan Team! We are now safely back in Baguio after a 12 hour trip from Lingaye and after crossing a deep ravine on foot and in complete darkness. One of my stations is completely destroyed due to a massaive landslide. We will be coordinating relief efforts immediately. Pilipinas Shell has released 2 Million Pesos for our affected areas. Sorry, my phone was malfunctioning for the last 2 days."

As we are waiting for the packing of the food stuffs, fresh ideas were brought by members. One is putting up a comprehensive rehab center complete with facilities - kitchen, room, etc. Emergencies and disasters will come and go; when there is none this center can be used for training, etc. to be self-supporting. The affected party can be mobilized to do the cooking or cleaning, etc. instead of being feed all three meals except for those who have lost their loved ones but they can still be productive in small ways if they want to. Another idea is adopting one affected family each for one or two days by volunteer family. There are many good ideas to address disasters like this one.
I read from emails a call for rehabilitation of the survivors, rendering vocational training or livelihood projects for them. The Cordillerans are resilient people; we may guide them though.
Can we skip one good meal to share in small way like one small drop of water?

I really couldn't tell as I took these shots at random in between camera wipes since it was raining and my DSLR is bare and water is already getting into the focus ring. Thanks for looking deeper into some images here.

I sincerely believe that climatic change and heavy rains are not all there is to be blamed for this mishap. There must be some contributory factors other than the resident's innocence as to the impending danger and lack of concerns by proper authorities that could have warned the residents. There maybe some environmental violations that were left unabated and so on... but the thing now is...it is already too late to be pointing fingers on who is to be blamed. Sad :-(

Hello Sir, I just saw your cordillera newseum and I was totally saddened of what had happened in our place. I'm an Igorot exactly from Buguias and we do have BIMAK group here in Qatar. I asked all my Igorot colleagues to extend whatever help we can do.. I would like to ask your help to look for an NGO to whom we can send our little help. Also my friends and family wanted to extend more help to the10 year old survivor from Little Kibungan tragedy. We watched it from the TV patrol. Kindly help us to get more information with regards to the little girl…Your assistance is highly appreciated.

A brief encounter with G-5 & G-6 campus journalists of Baguio Central School.

Sharing my simple notes:
Cartooning and Photojourn
1. You don’t have to be realistic in drawing - suggestive caricatures (ex. Pickles jar running after chili onion n tomato)
2. Try to see or imagine things differently: a talking & walking tree, sun have eyes n ears etc.
3. Create a character, it can be an insect, a fruit, a furniture or your funny looking neighbor. Ex. Frog / Lizard.
4. Stress a point in an entertaining or amusing way through drawings.
5. Spark peoples imagination

PHOTOJournalism for K-12
News photos must show meaningful subjects like what’s new, whats happening and who are doing the actions.

A news photographer must be able to capture a revealing image that tells a picture story. (Photo essay)

Know how, when, where and what to capture with a camera…decisive moment, defining moment, revealing moment

Know the Do’s ‘n Dont’s
-ask permission
-display an ID
-if going on an assignment, indicate where you are going
-observe etiquette and protocols

Know the layout orientation…,vertical, horizontal, photo essay, tiktok…

Captions is just a short supplemental narrative that does not describe what is visually shown in the picture. It can be a quotation, a question over even a single word like ‘damned’ if it fits the image.

Radio Station’s went kaput

We humbly need your urgent help!

Maybe some of you are wondering, especially our listeners and viewers, why Bombo Radyo Baguio is no longer airing FB lives and that no news articles are now being published online.

On November 23, 2023, around 11:00 AM, our official page — Bombo Radyo Baguio, which has more than 512,000 followers and more than 365,000 likes cannot be accessed up to now. https://www.facebook.com/bomboradyobaguio

Apparently, the said FB page has been deleted because of some infractions. As such, we have already asked Facebook for a thorough investigation regarding the matter.

We are deeply frustrated since our official page was created 10 years ago. It was very important to us as it is through this that we can reach out to the public especially to the audiences that need it most.

The platform has long been our means in delivering our services to the public. It was through this that we could disseminate local and national concerns especially to the Cordillera communities and other compatriots abroad.

We believe that many are in need of the information we cover and deliver in and out of the Cordillera.

Temporarily, we created an FB page in order for us to resume our lives on Facebook. Anent to this, we appealing to each and everyone of you to encourage your friends and families to like and follow our new page.

As of today, we can no longer proceed with our FB lives since the page was just recently created.

Thus, we need to have an reestablished presence online before being allowed to do so. We have planned interviews lined-up but we are yet to proceed because of this constraints.
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554009773730...

Moreover, we are also humbly asking you to appeal with us to Facebook and Meta in order to recover and reinstate the former official page for the half a million follower who rely on the valuable information broadcasted and published on the page.

We are hoping for your support, thank you very much!

During the Cordillera Analogues photographic exhibit of the late Eduardo Masferre, I chanced upon Wig Tysmans, one of the country’s leading photographers who is now based in Manila. Luckily, I came with my vintage collection of Masferre postcards and few Tysmans contact prints or press promotional photos of Nikki Coseteng’s book on ‘Sinaunang Habi’.
I grabbed the opportunity to show my photo collections to Wig who is a fellow and asked him to sign his old print for my .

Eduardo Masferre - Father of Philippine Photography.
To me, the late great Eduardo Masferre of Sagada, Mt. Province is the Ansel Adams of the Philippines. Although Masferre’s photographic works mostly captures the ethnography of Cordillera, it gives us a glimpse of the indigenous people called living in the majestic highlands of Northern Philippines.
At the Cordillera Analogues exhibit of Gallery 2600 at the Baguio Convention and Cultural Center, 26 enlarged photographs were showcased along with memorabillas and photographic equipment of Masferre.
I brought my collection of 31 postcards each numbered and stamped at the back with the Masferre Bontoc Studio and had the album’s signed by the family members of the late .

This one’s for a kinda thing. Hmmm

“There’s not gonna be another Beatles, Hendrix, or KISS because there’s no longer a record industry. There’s only chaos.”

“ The next 15 year old kid who plugs into his Marshall amplifier won’t be able to make a living because record companies don’t pay advances, royalties or promotion anymore.”

“ It’s the freckle face kid who feels he or she is entitled to steal music without paying for it. Because in their logic you don’t need money because you’re rich being a musician. That’s the problem with downloading and the internet. Now everything is for free.”

“From 1958 - 1988 you can name at least 100 bands or artists that became iconic. Everyone from The Beatles, to Elvis Presley, to The Rolling Stones, and many more.”

“From 1988 until today you won’t be able to name one iconic band. And don’t tell me Nirvana. They had two albums and were done.”

“The nail has been put into the coffin of Rock And Roll.”

AI Ayayyaai!
It has been said that AI will replace many human activities by 2030. Reports gathered state that (AI) could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs not too long from now.
Are you alarmed by it? Are you affected? What can you say? Did you make an of yourself?
As one who chronicle developments in world communication and media arts, I certainly appreciate your shared opinion on this. Thanks
