ICYMI: Various progressives from Baguio City gathered at Malcolm Square to forward the removal of Vice President Sara Duterte from the Office through a candle lighting, February 5.

In December 2024, three impeachment complaints were filed against the Vice President on the grounds of Duterte's betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the Constitution.

The case was passed last February 5, 2025 to the Senate after the House of Representatives reached a 215-vote in favor of the impeachment.

The trial will start once the Senate reconvenes on June 2, 2025.

OUTCROP’S OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST MEDIA ATTACKS

Today, as we celebrate the National Day of Action Against Media Attacks, UP Baguio Outcrop condemns the continued attacks on the press despite the new administration’s promise of upholding press freedom.

While speaking at the Manila Overseas Press Club, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. vowed to support and protect the rights of the Philippine media, which had experienced harassment and vilification during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s term. However, this could not be further from the truth. The Philippines continues to be one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. The country dropped two places, from 132nd to 134th, in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index.

Meanwhile, journalists still experience continued attacks from the state. Just recently, Deo Montesclaros, Pinoy Weekly multimedia reporter and former correspondent of Northern Dispatch, was charged with terrorist financing along with four other Cagayan activists.

Similarly, Frenchie Mae Cumpio, a journalist from Eastern Vista, was also charged with terrorist financing and illegal possession of fi****ms after the military raided her home in 2020. She is still under police custody five years later.

Additionally, James Balao, former Editor-in-Chief of Outcrop, was abducted in 2008, while Dexter Capuyan, also a former Editor-in-Chief of Outcrop, and journalist Bazoo de Jesus, were both abducted in 2023. They are still missing as of today.

As Bongbong Marcos faces his third year as president, we continue our demands for him to uphold his promises of protecting the press, to drop the charges against journalists like Motesclaros and Cumpio, and to surface all Desaparecidos, including Balao, Capuyan, and Bazoo.

Despite the continued attacks on journalists, UP Baguio Outcrop promises to continue telling the stories of the students and the masses.

Mapagpalayang kaisipan para sa malayang pahayagan!

kicked off with a mobilization in front of the Department of Agrarian Reform in Tarlac, together with peasants from Hacienda Luisita, to forward their call for genuine land reform and land distribution among farmers.

Afterward, delegates had a basic mass exposure at Hacienda Luisita.

The second day started with a discussion by Bell Lacerna from College Editors Guild of the Philippines on the role of student publications in covering elections. Lacerna emphasized the importance of critical reportage amidst red-tagging of candidates, possible electoral fraud, and distrust of the election process. His overall talk was in line with the vision of Kabataan Tayo ang Pagasa which promotes genuine people’s politics.

This discussion was followed by a workshop led by Gwen Latoza, a researcher from Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, where it aims to equip student publications with skills and knowledge on how to cover election activities including following candidates’ expenses on their campaigns.

19 student publications across the UP System presented their publication reports where they highlighted the current state of their institutions, and their plans for the academic year.

On its third day, the congress passed 9 resolutions scoping anti-imperialist and anti-fascist campaigns, campus journalism issues, elections, and national and governance concerns including the support to the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte and denouncing budget cuts.
