Weather Update
Aira E. Arevalo

As of today, December 16, 2021, Typhoon Odette (internationally known as Rai) with the windspeed of 150 km/h further intensifies and threatens as it approaches the vicinity of Dinagat Island, Surigao provinces, according to PAGASA. As the the typhoon continues to move, areas that might be affected were raised with several tropical cyclone wind signals, including Batangas, Signal No.1.

Strong winds (strong breeze to near gale) with higher gusts will be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS #1 is currently in effect during the passage of the typhoon. And this will bring very light damage to structures and vegetation.

To maintain the safety of citizens and even the properties, preparation is a must. Having an emergency kit is a good idea in case that evacuation is needed. Avoid fishing and sailing at seas for the mean time. And as much as possible, stay away the coastal areas to avoid the possible threat of storm surge.

Keeping it up with DCP
Ma. Gwenneth Alexis C. Bobadilla

When it comes to technology, many of us have become reliant and use tech on a daily basis for work, pleasure, or both. More specifically, we have become reliant on internet tech and computers for many purposes like in education.

There are many reasons why computers have become such as big part of the educational world in today’s digital era. There are also many learners who can benefit from using computers to aid education. This is deemed relevant by the Department of Education sector that's why it offers this called DepEd Computerization Program or DCP.

The DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) aims to provide public schools with appropriate technologies that would enhance the teaching-learning process and meet the challenges of the 21st century. It also seeks to provide computer laboratory packages to secondary schools, e-classroom to elementary schools and laptops for mobile teachers.

This year, the program was allocated P5.9 billion. It only goes to show the support being given by the government to the DCP Program of DepEd. However, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture, said implementation woes hounded the DCP and these concerns need to be addressed.

Nonetheless, this one program of DepEd plays an important role to the education in the country, especially in this time of pandemic where education strive to continue, virtually.

Say Yes to Face to Face Classes
Beatrice Faye D. Balugo

This pandemic has affected a lot of aspect in our life, including schooling. Since this pandemic started, a new strategy of learning was implemented, and that is online classes. Many students, teachers and school staffs had a hard time with this, and now that we're all being vaccinated, it seems its time to resume face to face classes.

As one of the students who struggled with online classes, I would agree if DepEd decides to hold face to face classes. Since it seems that COVID cases have dropped and people are getting vaccinated I would say this is the right time to do it. Moreover, face to face classes ensure that students actually learn.

According to World Economic Forum, in a survey of more than 2,500 teachers in eight countries everyone seemed to agree that online classes are not as effective as classroom based teaching. As a student who experiences online classes, i can confirm that online classes isn't an effective way to learn. Due to the fact that there are some classes that cannot be taught online. Moreover, face to face classes can not only be good for learning but interaction or socialization. Yes we can still socialize online but it is way more different when you actually see the person you are talking to. It is more relieving to actually see their reaction when you talk to each other and this will create a much deeper bond with each other. Plus, with this you will not feel alone when you are interacting with others which will lessen the chances of your mental health deteriorating.

So yes, I absolutely agree with face to face classes being back. It will ensure that students are actually learning something and they get to see the friends they haven't seen for more than a year. Though, there may be a chance of getting the virus through this, there will be precautions that all students and staffs will abide to. For now, I can only hope that we will resume to classroom based teaching soon.

Vaccines can help if the Omicron Variant Enters the Philippines – UP Experts

The University of the Philippines COVID-19 Pandemic Response Team (UP PRT) said last Sunday that taking the primary doses of vaccines and receiving booster shots there after could still be an assistance in preventing the “high transmissible” Omicron variant if it enters the country. In a super Radyo dzBB interview, UP PRT Spokesman Dr. Jomar Rabajante explained that they are currently monitoring the studies from other countries regarding the Omicron Variant of the COVID-19 which was first detected in South Africa and has been marked as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO). “Sa ibang bansa, kung titingnan po natin, may mga nagsasabi talaga na highly transmissible itong Omicron up to three times mas transmissible than the Delta Variant. Mabilis po talagang kumalat at yung pagkalat niya kitang-kita sa South Africa. As in marami na talaga ddong Omicron ang variant”. Rebajante said. Rebajante explained that the higher transmissibility of Omicron compared to Delta could be seen in the Case of South Africa which was only detected in the country in early November, but has already infected lots of individuals a month after.

On the other hand, he said it took a couple of months before the Delta Variant has continuously spread in various countries. As of afternoon of December 6, DOH haven't reported any cases of Omicron variant in the country yet, 12 samples (one from a COVID positive who arrived from South Africa and 11 returning overseas Filipinos) are now undergoing genomic sequencing . The results are expected by Wednesday. That's why both medical experts and the DOH are keep persuading the people to get the vaccine for them to be prepared for the approach of the Omicron Variant.

Batangas City - Becoming Too Complacent?
Aira E. Arevalo

As of December 7, 2021, there are only 17 active cases of Covid-19 in the city of Batangas according to the record posted by Palakat Batangas City. Despite such few cases, the new Omicron Variant is another government's problem and threat to the citizens. But surprisingly, with the emergence of this new variant, Batangas City government still continue to ease the health protocols and restrictions.

Wearing of face shield is no longer required and children are now allowed to go the malls. As a result, the protection of the citizens is reduced which can cause a resurgence and increase in the cases of the disease. All children are prone of getting the virus that causes Covid-19, much more now that they are allowed to go to malls. Covid-19 does not choose its victim be it adult or child. It seemed that the cases are decreasing but does it really assure the welfare of the children going to confined places like malls? In this battle where people cannot see the enemy, is it practical to loosen our guards and become complacent? Compared to adults, children are less likely to have Covid-19 but those children with other health conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and asthma have a higher risk of serious illness with Covid-19. And the government's necessary response to this is to restrict health protocols especially with regards to young people.

To conclude, we should not be complacent even now that the number of Covid cases is low. No matter how lax the policies of the government become, we, ourselves as citizens must also take actions towards safety. Wearing face shields do not harm anyone so we may continue to do so. Especially in the upcoming election, with the influx of people, more stringent protocols are needed to maintain safety. Because in this time of pandemic, the most important thing is to keep everyone safe. And this pandemic, is a big problem to solve.

Feast of the Undying Virginity
Iseah Vien D. Mendoza

December 8, mark the date, and celebrate!
Come and let’s have fun because the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is yet to come!

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic feast celebrating Mary's conception without sin. Even though this feast day occurs in the liturgical season of Advent, which prepares for the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Mary in the womb of her mother, St. Anne.

This festive event goes normally showing deep devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. There's a lot of going on when this event is coming, like mass gatherings, delightful parades, and colorful environment and many more. Some other people prepare delicious meals for their guests to show their reception.

Also, the government implements a national holiday for this day, so that the workers and students can seize and enjoy the feast of Our Mother Mary.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic affects all the festivities of the people. People barely go outside and have fun because they worry about their own safety. But despite the thing, people always find a way to express their devotion for the Virgin Mary.

Unwind and celebrate, as you wait for December 8, to honor our Mother Mary, for she lived without a sin, and for her undying virginity.
