It had been just a quiet Monday afternoon in 1987 before Edgecumbe was ripped apart by a series of destructive earthquakes. The quakes, which occurred on March 2nd, caused widespread damage across the district.

LJ speaks to Former 1XX News Editor, Chris Bullen and 1XX Managing Director, Glenn Smith who both recall the events of the day, their stand-out memories and the extensive damage caused by the earthquakes.

On May 18th 2005, Matata was hit with a devastating turn of events. Nearly 350mm rain fell in 24 hours, causing a significant flood to ravage through the town.

Sorry about the delay in posting everyone, It's been a very busy past 10 days here at Radio 1XX! 😪

But Episode 2: The History of 1XX was released last week! 🥳

At 10:30am on Wednesday June 30th 1971, Radio 1XX went live for the first time on 1240AM. Over the past 50 years, Radio 1XX has been the voice for the Eastern Bay of Plenty, providing news and entertainment, as well as being the first point in time of local emergency.

Kieran and LJ speak to 1XX Managing Director, Glenn Smith who has been at the station since 1974. They learn more about the past 50 years at 1XX; the ups and downs, memorable moments and the changes over the years.
