Thoughts on Today's Verse...
The woman who said this to herself knew ostracism and loneliness because of her twelve-year bout with an illness that made her unclean under Jewish law. Her condition imprisoned her and made her life nearly unlivable socially, physically, and religiously.

Just as Jesus freed her from her prison (vs. 22), he also longs to free you from yours. What holds you captive? Jesus longs to give you freedom through at least five gifts:

The Scriptures to help you know God's will and protect yourself from harm.
Your surrender to his lordship as you let him lead you.
Your cleansing from sin, guilt, and shame.
The gift of the Holy Spirit to empower you, help you overcome sin, and become more like Jesus.
His family of brothers and sisters to support you, encourage you, help you, and hold you accountable to your commitment to him.
These are five of God's precious keys to freedom. So, dear friend, in your heart, "touch his cloak" by reaching out to him, confessing him as your Savior, and honoring him as your Lord.

My Prayer...
Father, I pray today for all those who need deliverance from the evil one's grip in whatever form he has in their lives. I confidently pray in Jesus' mighty and holy name, asking that you, the Lord of all creation, to break the bonds that hold each of our readers captive to the evil one. Amen

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Many people had and still have widely varying opinions about Jesus' identity. The real issue, however, is what YOU believe about Jesus and who Jesus reveals himself to be. What you decide about the identity of Jesus as God's Son, the Lord and Christ, the Messiah of Israel, means everything for you (Romans 10:9-13) and those you seek to influence. So, please listen again to Jesus' question to his disciples as if he is asking it of you: "Who do you say I am?" I pray that your answer is the same as Peter's: "The Christ (the Messiah) of God."

My Prayer...
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus, who is my Lord (Philippians 2:10-11), Savior (John 4:42), friend (John 4:14-15), and older brother (Hebrews 2:11, 14) in your family. I praise you for sending him to reveal yourself to us. I thank you for demonstrating your love for us through his death, burial, and resurrection. I do believe that Jesus is the Christ, your chosen Messiah, the Son of the Living God, and the only Savior who can bring freedom, pardon, cleansing, and complete salvation. Thank you! In Jesus' mighty name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Grace frees us from the law of sin and death. However, our freedom is not to be used selfishly — not for rebellion or self-gratification. Instead, we must use our liberty redemptively, just as Jesus did (Philippians 2:5-11). We can voluntarily limit that freedom to help others still caught in bo***ge to sin and false ideas about God. We can use the freedom of the Spirit to be transformed to be like Christ (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). We can honestly submit ourselves to the needs of those who don't know Jesus to win some of them to the LORD and his grace (1 Corinthians 9:20-23). Let's use our freedom to rejoice, redeem, and bless.

My Prayer...
Thank you, great and mighty Lord, for setting me free by your grace. I know, dear Father, you gave this gift to me at great cost to you — the humiliating torture, death, and burial of your Son, Jesus Christ. But you also raised him triumphantly from death! So use me, dear Father, to bless others who have not yet found their deliverance and freedom in Jesus so the Spirit can raise them triumphantly with Jesus to a fresh new life. I pray this in the name of my Savior, Jesus. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Just a little leaven and the whole lump is changed (1 Corinthians 5:6). A sinful person can have the same effect, leaving an evil residue on an entire group of people committed to God. So let's be wise and reverence God by obeying him and his Word. Let's be insightful in the way we deal with sin and temptation in our lives. Let's also remember that we are at war with the evil one (Ephesians 6:10-12) and do not even allow him the tiniest footholds. Then, let's praise God because our Savior has already defeated our enemy, and the Holy Spirit empowers us to stand up to Satan's attacks and resist his temptations.

My Prayer...
Loving Father, please give me wisdom to see through the deceptiveness of the devil's schemes while I seek to live your truth and display your character in my life. Thank you for your power at work in me and in my life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Anger, frustration, disappointment, and loss of self-control have sunk many of God's most significant leaders — even when what they have seen is horrible and dishonoring to God. Leading can sometimes be an agonizing and disappointing task. Yet God's people would perish without strong leaders full of godly conviction. Despite the failure of some of our leaders and the perils that can beset those who choose to lead, leadership is as honorable as it is vital! Where would Israel have been without Moses or Joshua or Hezekiah or David...? So if the Lord is calling you to lead, don't accept his invitation lightly, but please, accept it! If you are not a leader, please remember to pray for your leaders and their families as they seek to honor God through their leadership (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13; Hebrews 13:7-8, 17).

My Prayer...
Holy Lord, please bless your Church with leaders of great faith, courage, endurance, and integrity. Open my heart to my leaders and use me to bless and encourage them. Bless those you've gifted to lead with the courage to answer you when you call them to serve you. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
I don't know about you, but I'm very visual. So, I appreciate how God made the world with all its varied colors, many species, and rich landscapes. I am thankful that our Father in Heaven used key images in our world to remind us of his daily provision and eternal grace. The beauty of a rainbow is not just in its beautiful colors or the aroma of fresh rain that often accompanies it but also in the covenant God made with us and our world after the Great Flood. The eternal and living God chose to link himself to our destiny and to involve himself in our world because of his love and grace. With the rainbow as his symbol, God promised not to destroy all life on our planet with a flood. Each of us is God's creation from the womb, so we are precious to him (Psalm 139:13-16). So, we commit to living morally and responsibly to God as we seek to honor him and his covenant represented by the rainbow (Genesis 9:4-7) and refuse to dishonor this covenant with wickedness (Genesis 9:22-24). God made the rainbow as a reminder that he loves us and calls us to honor him with our character and care for his creation.

My Prayer...
Almighty God, thank you for making your great promises when we had no right to expect them, much less to demand them. Thank you for attaching those promises to things in my everyday world that remind me of your constant and watchful care. In Jesus' name, I ask for strength and wisdom to respond to your grace in holiness and honor. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Paul was careful not to take support from the Corinthians even though it was his right as a minister of the Gospel. Instead, he knew their problems with generosity and showed them a greater example of living for Jesus without obvious and instant rewards. Often, we must show our values before others share them with us. Paul was a master at reading the needs around him and living in a way that was an example. He then would call them to follow his example as he followed the example of Christ (1 Corinthians 4:16, 11:1). By not receiving support for his ministry, Paul demonstrated to them that they needed to make a living with their own hands and be responsible (1 Corinthians 4:12; 1 Thessalonians 4:11). Let's commit to following Paul's example and live with integrity before others.

My Prayer...
Father God and Almighty Lord, please give me the courage and integrity to live my principles in a way that is a blessing and an example to others. Bless me, dear Father, with a life that makes a mark on others for your glory. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
One of the great tragedies of our modern world is that while some who preach and teach the gospel are charlatans and cheats, the vast majority of God's servants work hard and barely scrape by financially. Why not find some underpaid and forgotten Kingdom servant and share some blessings God has given you? A note of kindness, a specific comment of praise and thanksgiving, or a surprising financial gift can do amazing things to lift one of God's servants and empower them to ever greater service.

My Prayer...
Holy Father, I thank you for your servants who share the message of Jesus wherever they are. Father, I want to especially thank you for these people who share and proclaim your gospel.

Please bless them with good health, a faithful and loving family, and the proper support to do your work in a way worthy of your cause and their commitment. Please use me to bless and encourage your ministers of grace. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
I love the way Jesus got his disciples' attention in this situation. He challenged them "to do immeasurably more than all [they] ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20-21). Basically, Jesus told them, "You feed them, boys!" Of course, they knew that they couldn't! Yet Jesus showed them they could do amazing things if they brought their meager resources to him. When the big picnic was over, each of those limited disciples got to pick up a basket full of leftovers from the table of Jesus' grace (Luke 9:17). Let's remember our challenge is the limited resources we see but our unwillingness to bring what we have to Jesus and trust that he will do something with us, and those resources, to bless others in ways we couldn't have dreamed!

My Prayer...
All praise to you, Abba Father, for your extravagant help and mercy in times of need, your loving and generous provision in times of want, and your surprising and exciting use of my limited resources as I seek to do your will. I know that you have entrusted me with what I have to accomplish the work you have called me to do as I serve to bless others. Forgive me, Father, for not trusting you to make what I think are my meager resources more than enough to do your work in my world! In Jesus' name, I ask for your grace fully confident and praising you for your sufficiency. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Why did Jesus associate with sinners? Because we need him to associate with us! What's the most crucial part of that truth: Jesus' desire to love and save us or our recognition of our need for him in our sinfulness? Of course, the most crucial truth is Jesus' desire to love and save us. Without him, recognizing our sinfulness would only lead us to despair. At the same time, however, if we don't acknowledge our need for Jesus' love and grace, the Lord's sacrifice for us is lost to us. So, let's praise Jesus as our loving and sacrificial Savior as we acknowledge our need for his merciful love and mighty grace!

My Prayer...
Gracious Father, I praise you from the bottom of my heart for providing Jesus as my Savior. At the same time, dear Father, I confess I struggle with sin. I want sin entirely out of my life, yet I find that I cannot rid myself of its constant shadow and its penetrating stain. Without your grace and the love and mercy of Jesus, I know I could not stand before you as your pure child. So, please forgive me for the sins I confess to you now...

As I have received your love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness, please receive my praise for your gracious forgiveness. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
An old saying says, "You can't outgive God!" And this saying is true. The more we give to bless others and honor God, the more we have to give. Why does God bless us with riches? So we can share those riches generously with those in need, bring joy to those in despair, and give thanksgiving from all of these hearts to God.

My Prayer...
Father God in heaven, thank you for providing me with so many blessings. May my use of your riches bring you glory and bring others a true and genuine blessing that will touch their hearts with your grace. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
There are many noble and beneficial fields of academic pursuit. However, as today's Scripture reminds us, true wisdom and the greatest understanding can be found in only one place: a reverential knowledge of God and the acknowledgment of his will with our obedience in all of our ways!

My Prayer...
Lord God, Holy Savior of Israel, and my Abba Father thank you for the grace of prayer and the gift of your truth that leads to wisdom. Thank you for your steadfastness and faithfulness in sharing this truth with us in the holy Scriptures, through our experience of your presence in our lives, and through the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Thank you for your patience as we seek to integrate your truth into our daily lives and seek to live with wisdom. Thank you for your mercy and justice. We place our lives and futures in your hands as we strive to honor you with our obedience and be used for your glory. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
What a powerful promise! If we are willing to generously share with others in the name of Jesus, as the apostle Paul discusses in the previous verses, we will always have what we need to bless others, and our lives will be full of good deeds that bring glory to God and his blessing to many. So let's remind ourselves of one of the first lessons we should have learned as young children: share... share what we have... share generously! Only this time, as children of God, let's share in the name of Jesus to bless others so they receive his grace in tangible ways.

My Prayer...
Thank you, Father, for all the incredible blessings you have poured into my life. You have richly blessed me physically and spiritually. Now, I ask that your Holy Spirit will help me be generous with the gifts you have so richly poured into my life. O Lord, may I be a conduit of your blessings so that others may come to know your grace through the blessings you've given me. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Who are you listening to in your life? We can hear all sorts of different voices and listen to all sorts of religious commentary and insight. However, we can follow only One as the Source of all truth and life. Who are we going to listen to as we make our decisions about morality, values, ethics, and character? Who has earned the right to be heard regarding truth, life, death, sin, and salvation? God makes it unmistakably clear at the Mount of Transfiguration: we must listen to his Son Jesus! Moses was amazing, and Elijah was bold and brave. Peter, James, and John were blown away to see them at Jesus' transfiguration. But God made it clear: we must listen, obey, and follow only one as our source of truth, and God said of him, "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!"

My Prayer...
Almighty God, I need the Holy Spirit's help to silence the voices of dispute, doubt, deception, and demagoguery surrounding me. Help me hear the voice of Jesus above the noise of politicians, influencers, and self-appointed experts of my day. I want to follow Jesus and obey him in all things, no matter what anyone else may choose to do or to whom they entrust their hearts. Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
God is the Creator! Life is defined in him and by him. The multitudes of heaven worship and adore the Lord for his creative power and love. For me, that means two very important things.

- I need to give him my heartfelt worship and praise.

- When I praise God, I am doing something eternal and joining with the host of heaven in worshiping the Lord!

You and I won't take much out of this life into the next, but among those things is our praise to our God and Father. Praise be to God, not just now, but forevermore!

My Prayer...
Thank you, dear God, for creating the universe in its incomprehensible expanse. Thank you, holy Father, for re-creating me in Christ so that I can share in your glory as your beloved child. Thank you, almighty Lord, for creating life that endures forever. I look forward to that Day when I see you face to face and praise you with the multitudes of heaven. In Jesus' name, I praise. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
"Stand up and shout it if you love my Jesus!" That's a song our children love to sing! But what happens to our youthful exuberance and joy at worshiping the Lord? God doesn't want us to lose it. Read through the Bible and highlight all the physical acts used to reverence and praise our awesome and eternal God — standing, bowing, kneeling, prostrating, lifting hands, clapping, shouting... and on and on we could go. In a world that regularly uses God's name in vain, isn't it time we stood up as believers and praised him for all he has done, is doing, and will do in the future? Shouldn't we do this not only in church buildings (our private worship) but also in our daily devotional times (our personal worship) and in the way we live daily (our public worship)? Yes! Let's "Stand up and praise the Lord [our] God, who is from everlasting to everlasting."

My Prayer...
You alone are God and are worthy of all of my praise. Please receive my praise in my worship, whether I offer it in private with other Christians, in my daily personal worship times, or in my public worship, as I live as an example before my family, friends, and coworkers. Please receive the praise I seek to offer you in my life and through my words. In the name of Jesus, I praise you. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
When Paul later teaches in his letters that the Church is the Body of Christ (Romans 12:3-4; 1 Corinthians 10:10-16-17; Ephesians 5:23, 29; Colossians 1:18, 24), he isn't being theoretical. The Church IS Jesus' presence, his Body alive and at work in the world. What is done to the Church as a collective group of people is done to Jesus. What is done to individual Christians is done to their Savior. Jesus made this clear to Paul, then known as Saul, by emphasizing that Saul's persecution of believers was also persecution of Jesus — "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" Jesus is present in the world today through his people! The saying is true: the only Jesus many will see today is the Jesus they see through you and me.

My Prayer...
Dear Father, please "Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me, all His wonderful passion and purity; May His Spirit divine, all my being refine; Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me." In the name of my Savior, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Let's ask God to help us view people through the eyes of Jesus so that we will see them as someone in whom the work of God needs to be displayed. When Jesus and his followers approached a man who was blind from birth, the disciples assumed that this misfortune had happened because someone had sinned. Jesus saw their labeling of the man as dehumanizing to the man and a dismissal of his value as a person because they thought he had sinned or his parents had. So, Jesus taught them, and if we pay attention, he teaches us to see a person's hurt as our opportunity and responsibility to bring God's grace to someone in need. So, what is this work of God we are to help display in people's lives? Jesus had answered that question earlier in his ministry: "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent" (John 6:28-29) — Jesus!

My Prayer...
Father God in heaven, please help me see the people around me as Jesus does. I want to ensure that your work is done in their lives. Please give me patience with rude people, tenderness with hurting people, and boldness with those who are ready to hear the Good News of Jesus. Use me to help others display your work in their lives! In the name of Christ Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
God fulfilled this great promise of the prophet Isaiah with the coming of John the baptizer and Jesus (Matthew 4:15-16; Luke 1:76-79). Jesus came as the Light of the World (John 9:5) to cast out the darkness of Satan, evil, and death (John 12:31). So, as darkness falls tonight, find a street light and capture it in your memory to remind you to do two things every time you see such a light:

Thank God for sending his Light, Jesus, to cast out our darkness.
Commit to sharing that Light with those you know trapped in darkness.
My Prayer...
Loving and eternal God, thank you for shining your Light into my heart through Jesus (2 Corinthians 4:6). I ask you, dear Father, for the Holy Spirit's help as I use my words and actions to bless those around me. I want them to see the Light of your grace and salvation that Jesus brings. My heart yearns for others to find their hope in him, your Son, our Savior. So, I pray in Jesus' name, hoping my influence helps others see Jesus more clearly as the Light for their lives. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
The words of Jessie Brown Pound's old hymn, "Will You Not Tell It Today?" say it best: "If the light of his presence has brightened your way, O will you not tell it today?" Prayerfully select someone who needs to know of the goodness and graciousness of God, then please, lovingly, share Jesus with that person. A heart filled with praise to God will not only praise him but will lead others to do so as well. I can't think of a better example of this than Andrew, who heard about Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was tell his brother Simon Peter and bring him to Jesus (John 1:40-42).

My Prayer...
O Lord, I praise you from the bottom of my heart. In addition, dear Father, please bless me today as I seek to bring others to know and honor you more fully by following Jesus. In Jesus' name, I pray, asking for your power and grace to be with me as I seek to lead others to Jesus. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Knowing Jesus is God's Messiah is one thing. Following Jesus as our Lord is quite another. Getting our minds, hearts, and lives to line up with Jesus is always a challenge. Once Jesus' disciples confessed him as the Christ, he knew he had to teach them the real road to glory. Each of the Gospels reminds us that this road led to the cross of agony before it led to the crown of glory. The early church captured it in a song that reminded them that they, too, must walk that same road of the cross as their Savior and Lord walked (see Philippians 2:5-11). We are heaven-bound people, but we can be sure that we will encounter potholes and bumps along the road and face some steep hills to climb as Satan tries to derail and defeat us. Our Savior, however, has already walked this road triumphantly. He is our great reminder that the path of the cross also leads us to share in our Lord's glory!

My Prayer...
Dear Father, I know several believers who are struggling to follow Jesus faithfully. I ask that you give them strength and courage to endure. Please use me to encourage them and to help them through this dark time in their lives. May my life and my words point them to Jesus. I want to specifically mention several people who are struggling and ask you to bless them. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
While we often talk about Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we can also find it easy to ignore his voice, or worse, hear Jesus' words and ignore them. Our obedience to what Jesus says demonstrates that we have put our faith in him. To foolishly disobey, ignore, or neglect to do what Jesus says is to show that we don't believe him to be our Lord to DO what he says to us as our Lord! Jesus promised a very rude awakening at judgment for those who take this attitude (Matthew 7:21-27). So, let's commit to reading through each of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John) before the end of the year. As we read about Jesus' life and teachings, let's do it as a search for the heart of Jesus and ask God to help us know him better and follow him more thoroughly and more obediently as the Holy Spirit conforms us to be more like him (2 Corinthians 3:18)!

My Prayer...
Be with me, dear Father, as I seek to know Jesus better and obey his words more faithfully as I read your holy Scriptures, which find their center in him. So, I pray for obedience in my daily life in the name of my Lord, Jesus, the Son of God, the Son of Man, and my Savior. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
The sweetest confession any of us will ever make is this: "I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and I want him to be Lord of my life." Let's repeat it, out loud, to the glory of God the Father: "I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and I want him to be Lord of my life." What other people say about Jesus and what they believe about Jesus is not the focus of the Lord's question to Peter. Who do I say that Jesus is? Will you answer like Peter? I think we should. So, let's say it again for the third time: "I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and I want him to be Lord of my life." Now, let's commit that before the year ends, we will invite someone else to say these words for the first time in their life!

My Prayer...
Thank you, Lord God Almighty, for having a plan that brought me your Messiah, Jesus. I believe, dear God, that he is your Son, and I want him to be the Lord of my life, and I want him to be my Lord for the rest of my days. I pray this in the name of Jesus, your Son, and my Savior. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
The real issue in our lives is not God's faithfulness and goodness but ours. The history of God's faithfulness to Israel and his promises is found throughout the Scriptures. We can depend and rely on him to do what he promises despite the apparent circumstances of our lives. The real issue is whether or not we choose to truly love him and live for his purposes when our lives become unbearable and faith becomes hard. This verse is no platitude or easy answer. It is the life ring of hope for those with gritty faith who choose to persevere when there is no easy reason for doing so. Faith like this is rooted in a Savior who triumphed over death, Satan, sin, and hell by voluntarily giving his life for our salvation. But he remained in the grave a second day. There appeared to be no hope, but hope burst forth as Jesus rose from the dead on the third day. So, will we choose to keep loving God and living for his purposes when things are hard — when we are caught on our own "second day" while waiting for the dawn of the third day and our complete salvation?

My Prayer...
Heavenly Father, gracious Lord, please give me courage, faith, and character, O Lord, and may I never outlive my faith and hope in you as I love you and live for your purpose in my life. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
What kind of man is this? Ah, Jesus is much more than a man; he is our Lord, King, Messiah, Shepherd, and Savior. Most certainly, when Jesus came in the flesh to earth, he was fully a man. Yet this Christ Jesus is also the Master of earth, wind, and storm because he is the Creator of it all (John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:15-18). Rather than merely talking about Jesus, we need to bow down and worship him for all that he is, all has done, and all he is in the process of doing to bring us home to him, safely and eternally!

My Prayer...
Tender Shepherd and Abba Father, thank you for emptying heaven of your choicest glory and sending Jesus to be my Lord and Savior (Philippians 2:6-11). As I face the storms in my life, please give me the courage to stand bravely in faith, trusting that my Savior will still the winds and the waves and deliver me safely home to you. In Jesus' glorious name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Sometimes, our prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling like BBs and fall to the floor, rattling around under our feet and tripping us up in mockery of our requests. Other times, we are overcome with emotion, and the words of our prayers can't begin to capture what's crashing around in our hearts. Thanks be to God for the assurance that the power of our prayers is not dependent upon the choice of our words but upon his grace given us by the Holy Spirit's intercession. The Holy Spirit presents our requests — our words, our emotions, and even the things beyond our words and emotions — and he does so to God powerfully and acceptably, no matter what comes out of our hearts and mouths!

My Prayer...
Holy God and loving Father, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit, through whom I have the ultimate assurance that you hear and accept my words, thoughts, emotions, and even the conflicts of my heart when I pray. In Jesus' name, I thank you for this grace. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
I'm not good at waiting. I don't like waiting for Christmas. I don't like waiting in line to check out or check in somewhere. I don't like waiting for someone who is late. I don't like waiting for a surprise. I don't like to wait for.... well, you get the idea, I don't like to wait. But my hope in the Lord gives me patience beyond my human tendency. As much as the Lord has blessed me, I'm fully confident that I can't even begin to imagine the good things Jesus has in store for me when he comes again! So, while I wait, I try to stay busy, busy loving my Father in heaven and busy sharing his grace with others.

My Prayer...
Thank you, dear Father, for the patience I possess as I await Jesus' coming. This patience is beyond my normal inclination, and I recognize it as a gift from your indwelling Spirit. Bless my efforts at leading others to know Jesus and to find salvation in him. Bless my faith so that it will be strong and endure my waiting. Please bless my life, not with worldly goods but with godly patience and compassionate character, so I can be a light to others. In Jesus' name. Amen.
