Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Please note:
We chose these verses over a decade ago. Each reference this year corresponds to its date — 8/14/2024 became Hosea 8:14. This method challenges us to hear verses we often ignore and calls us to adjust our lives and priorities to align with God's teaching.
In prosperity, God's people left the Lord. They followed the cultural gods around them and engaged in the immorality of that world. The northern tribes, known as Israel at that time, became secular and pagan, like those around them. They lived immoral lives, forgot to care for the poor, overlooked the foreigners among them, cheated widows, mistreated the fatherless, and took advantage of the powerless (Amos 5:9-15). God's prophets, Amos and Hosea, denounced these vices. God saw and knew their sins. The Sovereign Lord wanted the northern tribes of Israel to recognize they had caused their coming destruction. Their hard hearts and their repeated refusal to live with God's character (Deuteronomy 10:14-22) led to their obliteration. As Christians, part of God's chosen people and his holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:9-12), we must heed the warning of Israel's history. Our lives must portray his values, our hearts must display his compassion, and our hands must do his will, or our claims are meaningless, and our future is tenuous. We must seek the Lord and live, not all the false props of pseudo-religious practices that ignore the heart of God (Amos 5:1-27).
My Prayer...
Father God in heaven, forgive us, for we have sinned. Father, forgive me, for I have sinned. We have too often looked the other way and ignored social, judicial, and racial injustice. Empower me, dear Lord, empower us to truly be your holy people, bound together by our faith in Jesus — not by our race, age, nationality, political preferences, or socioeconomic status. Please connect us back to you and to each other through our praise and our actions that exemplify your character and grace to our divided and often
Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Living a life of purity is a daily battle, an ongoing war between our flesh and the Spirit of God working to re-create us to be like Christ. Without the power of the Spirit, our willpower eventually fails. But because of the Spirit's power at work within us, we can overcome our failures in the flesh and progress toward our goal of Christlikeness (Colossians 1:28-29), which the Holy Spirit assures (2 Corinthians 3:17-18). We choose to live by the power of the Holy Spirit as the children of God and those destined to share in his glory because of his grace to us in Jesus and Jesus pouring the Holy Spirit out on us and into us (Titus 3:3-7)!
My Prayer...
Forgive me, Father, for the times when I've willingly let my flesh win out over the call of your Spirit. Thank you for cleansing me with the Spirit's holy fire and drawing me onward to be more like my Savior. Today, I intentionally offer you my heart for the Holy Spirit to empower me past sin as the Spirit molds me to be more and more like Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
We show who is in control of our lives by how we live. Do we live as children of God? Then we show we are submitting to the leadership of the Holy Spirit! We show our relationship as children of the Father by living with his character in our world. We trust the Holy Spirit to help us become transformed (2 Corinthians 3:18) to be more like Jesus, our older brother (Romans 8:14-17; Hebrews 2:14-18) as we display the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). So, let's live under the control of the Spirit — obeying the Spirit's inspired Word in the Scriptures and following the Spirit's lead in our daily lives. In this way, we can show and share Jesus in all we say and do!
My Prayer...
Dear Father, please help me display Jesus' beauty, grace, and holiness in my life. May I demonstrate the Holy Spirit's leading, power, and fruit in all I do each day? I ask for this grace as I pray in Jesus' name and under his authority. Amen.
Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Praise God! Jesus delivered us from the principle of law-keeping as the way to prove our righteousness and earn our salvation. We are now enabled to live out the will of God in our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit, who conforms us (Romans 8:28-29) and transforms us (2 Corinthians 3:18) to become like Christ, who is the fulfillment of the law (Matthew 5:17). We are saved by grace, through faith, so we can do good deeds out of thankfulness to honor our Savior just as God planned long ago for us to do (Ephesians 2:8-10).
My Prayer...
Thank you, dear Father, for your grace and mercy. I praise you, God Almighty, for your incredible sacrifice to bring my pardon. Glory and honor to you, O Sovereign Lord, for your gift of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me in your will and transform me into a person of your character, like Jesus Christ. In his name, I thank you. Amen.
Thoughts on Today's Verse...
This often repeated theme in the New Testament is from Jesus's lips and taught again by the apostle Paul. It should be a great reminder to us that we shouldn't spend our lives working for what is only temporary. We must invest in Jesus and his Kingdom, for all other kingdoms, structures, nations, and powers will ultimately pass away and be gone forever. Only what we invest in Jesus and his Kingdom will endure!
My Prayer...
Lord God Almighty, the Alpha and the Omega, the Eternal I Am, we thank you for being what everything else in the world cannot be. Please awaken our hearts to things of eternal significance and open our eyes to see through the transitory things that are so often alluring to us. In Jesus' name, we pray and ask for this help. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Ouch! We've known the way of sin for thousands of years, yet we sometimes still follow its path. We're lured by something pleasing to our eyes. We pause for closer inspection of it, allowing ourselves to be caught up in its desirability. We dabble in it and play with it, deceiving ourselves into thinking we can handle it by ourselves. We then participate in the sin. Finally, we involve others in our sin. You'd think we would have learned the pattern and stopped by now. You would think when we see others going down this trail of destruction, we would intervene. So, let's avoid sin and seek the help of the Holy Spirit to overcome temptation and help others by intervening when they are being led down the path of destruction.
My Prayer...
Father, please forgive me for my rebellious and sinful heart. Please help me realize when I am willfully self-deceiving myself when flirting with temptation. I want to live wholly and be holy for you. I don't want to be captured by the allure of sin or tempted by worldly passions, but to passionately live a godly life for your glory by avoiding sin and helping others when they are tempted. In Jesus' mighty name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Rust stains, grass stains, blood stains, chocolate stains. ARGH! Those stains are real nightmares in the laundry room. They don't just leave a stain on the fabric's surface, but they also leave a residue that infiltrates the fibers of our clothes. Evil is that way with our souls. We must not kid ourselves. Evil corrupts and leaves a residue that corrupts everything it touches and permeates — including the hearts of otherwise decent people. That's why we are urged to stay far away from evil and avoid its very appearance. That's also why Jesus died: not only to overcome the evil one but also to clean away the stain and purify our hearts from all of its residues.
My Prayer...
Father, guard my path and give me good Christian friends who will help guard my life from evil. In addition, dear Father, please help me as I seek to share Christ's cleansing and liberating power with those around me who are caught in evil's destructive and deceptive grasp. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Thoughts on Today's Verse...
This beatitude comes from Jesus' brother, James. He had experienced trials; he didn't just teach about them! James knew it was worth "hanging in" and "hanging on" when his faith was attacked. He affirmed that God loves us and has made his incredible promises about what lies ahead for us. He knew our testing and trials would eventually be transformed into a time of great blessing, victory, and honor. James wants us to know that God longs to bless us with life! After all, that's why God sent Jesus (John 10:10). So, hang on and hang in because the crown of life God longs to give lies in your future.
My Prayer...
Dear Lord and Father, thank you for all those times you strengthened me when I was under attack and sustained me when I was weary and ready to quit. Please write "perseverance" deep within my soul and give me a spirit of tenacity so that I might serve you no matter the outward circumstances of my life. In the mighty name of Jesus, I promise to persevere and receive that crown of life. Amen.
Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Many of us find it easy to let our circumstances determine our moods. Paul is addressing a group of new Christians in Thessalonica who had been under attack from the beginning of their Christian lives (Acts 17:5-9). Yet Paul reminded these believers that their new life in Christ had brought them joy despite their outwardly harsh circumstances. Their joy was not a fleeting, circumstance-determined veneer. Instead, they welcomed the powerful message of salvation with joy despite "severe suffering." Their joy was not dependent upon their earthly circumstances. Instead, they rooted their joy in their Savior's example, his abiding presence through the Holy Spirit, and his promised salvation.
My Prayer...
Dear heavenly Father, please make my joy immune to outward circumstances. Please empower that joy through your Holy Spirit abiding in me. Please bless and empower me as I seek to conform my life and attitude to the example of my Savior. Please help me become a better example of spiritual joy to those around me. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
While we're all weak and sinful, we are thankful to have Jesus to atone for our sins and to intercede before the Father on our behalf. Hallelujah for that grace! However, there are still a couple of significant problems with our sins. This verse reminds us of one of them. We don't want our sins to become a stumbling block to others or a disgrace to God and his people. Let's avoid sin because that is what God wants us to do. Let's avoid sin so it won't reflect poorly on God's people. Let's certainly avoid sin to keep from influencing others to sin. Let's also pray for ourselves and our brothers and sisters in Christ that God will not allow our failures to disgrace his Church, his Christ, and his cause.
My Prayer...
Forgive me, loving Shepherd, for my sins. I am sorry for rebelling against your grace. I am fully confident you have forgiven and cleansed me of my sins through Jesus' sacrifice. But please, dear God, use your divine power to prevent my sins and failures from bringing shame or embarrassment to you and your people as I seek to be a more redemptive influence on those around me. In Jesus' mighty name and based on your grace, I pray. Amen
Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Our praise should not only please God; it should also produce joy and gladness in the streets among the poor! Why? Because praise invites us to not only applaud God for what he does but to also join him in partnership as he does it. God's generosity, which evokes our praise, should stir our generosity, which in turn blesses others and leads them to praise God, too!
My Prayer...
Holy God, Almighty and majestic King, you are worthy of all honor and praise. You have done wonderful and mighty things. You have poured out your blessings upon me. You have kept your promises and provided me with the way of salvation. Please empower and strengthen me as I commit myself to bless, serve, and encourage others and point them to your glory and generosity by my joyous praise. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Let us begin with God today! #Amen
