The Bakels NZ Supreme Pie Awards is the biggest food competition in the Southern Hemisphere.
With over 5000 entries, some might even call this event the Pie-Olympics where top pies and their bakers are awarded bronze, silver, and gold.
In the tasting round of the bigger categories such as the mince and cheese or steak and cheese, judges are tasting around 50 pies.

Last week saw the final report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in State and Faith-based Care tabled in Parliament after almost 6 years. The report heard from almost 3000 survivors, only 5% were Pacific. Pacific and Māori survivors endured higher levels of physical abuse than other ethnicities, more than half described being sexually abused while they were in social welfare care.
William Wilson of Sāmoan and Scottish descent and Karl Mokaraka of Māori and Sāmoan descent both open up about their experiences as survivors of abuse in state-care.
Wesley College declined to comment.
