Here at Saltbox, we know recording can be expensive. So we have come up with a solution. Introducing Saltbox Saturdays. A Saturday session designed to be user friendly and cost effective. We record you or your band to a high quality with great equipment and personnel then provide you with the stems to take away and mix yourself.

“I wrote the lyrics to this song when we’d just found out I was pregnant… Two years earlier than we’d planned. Luke and I both have strong A-type personalities and we’re planners… I had so many mixed feelings and we were both stuck in this awful grey, bitter-sweet, strange moment. We’d been given the opportunity to record with . It felt like I vomited and cried the lyrics out onto the page and then it was done. Then, in March of this year our tamāhine was born”. - Vanilla

Something we have been working on for a while now… and it’s time to proudly introduce one of our new programmes ‘Hearing Now’ - A programme dedicated to our Rangatahi. The future music leaders of our city need support, encouragement and access to quality people and equipment. That’s what this is all about !

Keep an eye on our socials over the next few weeks as we introduce you to artists in the programme.

Hearing now has been produced in partnership with the passion and vision from .youth and is supported by the wonderful organization, Rātā Foundation.

We can’t wait to get started and show you how good our local Rangatahi are.

With lots of equipment needed to record or produce music, we think it’s a good time to show you all what we use. Microphones, compressors, eq’s, pre amps, synths… there are so many parts of the recording machine.

Staring with our trusty
Telefunken M82 Cardioid Dynamic Kick Drum Mic. We use this mostly on kick drums, but it’s such a versatile weapon, we can also use it on bass cabs, vocals or a voice over. It has a couple of switches to boost or scoop which means we can get the sound we want faster.

Just one of the many tools we will talk about this year, showing you what we use at Saltbox Studios
