My Daughter Florence and I recently spent a week Motorhoming and Freedom camping around the South Island.
We decided it was a good time try something we’d never done before and also support local domestic tourism.
We did almost 2000 km in 7days, and on the last day I had left myself with 5hr drive to get back to drop off the Motorhome and make our flight.
So we left early so we could have one more lunch somewhere on the way.
No sooner had we set off from out campsite in Naseby passed
an elderly gentleman sitting outside in the morning sun.
He looked up gave us the sort of wave that you’d give to a old friend. I rose my finger in cordial reply and readied myself for the trip ahead
But my gut instinct said- You have to Go back and Chat to this Man.
So I drove around the block pulled beside him and said “Gidday I’m Andrew”
“Nice to meet younAndrew” he said. “I’m Winton, would you like a coffee?”
We spent 1& 1/2 hours chatting to Winton and enjoying his hospitality. We listening to his stories, we talked cars while
admiring his 1938 Pontiac, looked his Collection of Popular scientist and popular Mechanic magazines.
It really was, for me, one of the highlights of our trip.
We only just made our deadline and we never had that last lunch, but I’m so glad I trusted my gut instinct and drove around the block.
Sometimes the smartest thing is to stop and listen…to yourself.
