Motofest has served up another classic performance in the national Superbike Championship.
Actually Motofest has served up a few classic performances. Combining some top Classic machine races with the final round of the National Superbike Championship.
However it was a nail biting performance by reigning Superbike Champion Mitch Rees that had people on their feet this afternoon.
Rees pulled off a great win in the weekends first Superbike race.
Rees ( Honda) finds himself needing to beat former MotoGP rider, Australian, Ant West (Yamaha) in each of the weekends races to retain the title.
West boltled to an early lead in race one today, with another former champion Al Hoogenboezem (Hoogie- Yamaha) holding second from Rees.
Rees ran wide in the early laps at the tracks slowest right hander.
After gradually working his way back up to (Hoogie) and holding station for a few laps it looked like the front three would remain in the same order. They sat within half a second of each other for a little over two laps.
Then Rees slipped past Hoogie and inched his way up to West over the next couple of laps.
Turn one is a special turn with an out of sight apex as the bikes crest the straight at maximum speed. It was here that Rees made his move.
West didn't relent easily. The competitors holding their lines through the turn but it was Rees who was first to pop back into view as they all ran down to turn two on the international circuit.
Hoogie had latched onto the back of West to keep the three in close formation for another two circuits.
Meanwhile further down the field, Rees father, former Superbike Champion, Tony (Honda) had gone missing from proceeding.
Taupo's Scott Moire (Yamaha) had finally got the better of Aucklands Dave Sharp( Kawasaki).
Mitch Rees managed to keep the pressure on from the front, pulling a couple of second gap to the chequered flag.
There is still plenty of action to go with a number of other classes, so get yourself out to Hampton Downs tomorrow an
