To all Buddhist and especially Nyingma Lamas, Tulkus, Khenpos, Monastic sangha members, and members of the Buddhist laity, and particularly to all followers, disciples, and students of the supreme leader of countless scholars and siddhas, Kyabje Chatral Sangye Dorje,
I humbly request your kind attention:
Recently, here in Yangleshöd, we received news that a completely unverified reincarnation of Rinpoche has been born and is to be enthroned as quickly as possible, which recklessly disregards and belittles the family, monastic community, and all the lamas, disciples, and followers connected to Kyabje Chatral Rinpoche. This news, which has run rampant all over the place, has been deeply disappointing and upsetting for all of us who are connected to Rinpoche, and we want to make clear that we have never legitimized or accepted this “reincarnation.”
Here is the reason: those of us who served Kyabje Rinpoche with body, speech, and mind for our entire lives heard Kyabje Rinpoche say over and over again, “There will never be a reincarnation of me.” His words spread like the wind throughout India, Tibet, and the whole world, and everyone obviously knows this. Based on Kyabje Rinpoche’s prescient wish and intention, those of us with a connection to him--his family, his entire monastic community, and all his followers, disciples, and attendants, have never recited supplication prayers for Rinpoche’s swift rebirth or requested him to return.
In adherence with Rinpoche’s above-mentioned testament, no one should ever recognize his reincarnation. Moreover, no one should engage in actions such as this, which demean and contradict the Dharma, our sacred commitments, and the law of karmic cause and effect in this and future lifetimes, bring shame upon the name of a fully-qualified lama such as this king of renunciation, and disparage the Buddha’s doctrine in general and in particular. Furthermore, I request everyone to accept responsibility for the Buddha’s teachings and never to condone such baseless behavior.
