Both kids and my wife are studying/at school right now. It's the first time that everyone but me, is at school. So now It's just me and Joep (our dog) alone at home. Feels a bit lonely but I will manage. 😇 Time for another double espresso during a small break. Then, back to work, lots of great music on the desk today. ✌️

Some people might regonize this meter, yes it's a phase scope. 🖖 It will tell you if things are in phase or out of phase. Basically what you see here, is as out of of phase as it could be. This is some lead sound and when played back in mono, it cancels, the lead sound is 90% gone, away, not there.. Now you might think, who plays back in mono, it's 2024, so who cares? Well, if I added the sound of this lead sound in this insta post you could not hear it, if this sound was played on a big PA system you might not hear it, if it was played back on a small Bluetooth speaker you might not hear it. Get my point here? Mono is still pretty much alive and maybe even more important then a couple of years back. Still people do not check what happens when played back in mono and these things happen.

So how do you check? You could use a phasescope, correlation meter but more effective is, play back your track in mono ⚠️and see how it withstands. You will instantly hear things collapse when you have phase issues. Most DAWs have some kind of mono button in the master section or otherwize, your monitor controller might even have it.

This time of the year is useually a bit more relaxed, but the last week my planning has pretty much exploded with a lot of really cool albums and EP's. Working hard to catch up on all deadlines, which is a pleasure since i'm working on awesome music. 💚. But it could be that my response is a little slower then normal. But I will not forget you guys!!

I will be going away and ofline for a couple of days. I will be back in the studio this coming monday. I might answers a mail here and there but it will take longer.
I'd suggest to do the same, enjoy the sun, enjoy the weather, enjoy being silent in nature and feel the energy around you and let it charge you.

Back home after our holiday in France. Now, relax and monday, slowly starting up the studio. First a lot of mails to handle and after that, work on some awesome music. This doesn't mean my holiday is completely over. I will still take some days off in the coming weeks so if you have mastering planned, it's always a good idea to check with me first.

Da Goose Mastering will be closed for holiday from the 16th of July untill the 31th of July.
Planning is pretty much fully booked untill my holiday, but I have some small spots left if you are fast enough. 😎
In the weeks after my holiday I will be there, but most likely taking more days off to enjoy and explore life. But hey, it's summer right? 🌍

I did this a couple of times before and I will now do it again. I will take a break from social media. I get tired and uninspired of useless scrolling through useless stuff. Maybe I will still post some things every now and then, mostly things that hopefully inspires you. Actually, now that I think of it. I hope this post inspires you to do the same thing and take a break from this whole social media thing and get social again. 🌿

Analog adds some character to the sound, but not always. A clean AD/DA path is essential for that, but not always. Sometimes a bit less neutral AD converter can give some extra balls to the sound. Today is such a day where my Burl ADC shines with the red lights on every now and then.

I think mastering is not just about audio and making someone else's music shine. It's also about the technical and administrative things like embedding correct metadata, quality control and delivering various file formats with proper and correct information. But what's also really important, is clear communication and staying humble. I think it's really important to be respectful to the artists, engineers and labels you are working for and not talk or post about the work you are doing unless you have strict permission to do so.

I personally don't like posting the work that I'm doing. I'd rather let the artists themselves speak out. It's their piece of art, their music, their time to shine, not mine.

Sometimes I repost a post from an artist or label that released something that I worked on and tagged me in it, but otherwise I prefer not to and rather post about tips and tricks and, what I think, interesting things. Being discrete and humble is really important I think. 💚

I love vinyl, I do since I was like 5 years old maybe which is 'some time ago'. I still buy vinyl records every now and then, but not as much as I used to. Still it's cool to have that physical product in your hand with some awesome content, or should I say music, on it. Maybe mr. Ek can do vinyl records as well, I already have a name for it, Spotivinyl. There is plenty of content outthere to put out.

Upgrading the raid system in the NAS with new, bigger disks to backup all your content. I'm happy to master so much content every day, all day. Bring it on, drop that content in my mailbox so that I can master it. I now have even more room for all that content.. I also master music every now and then...

The centrepiece of the analog section in my studio is the .audio IC2.1 Insert Computer. 9 stereo inserts, mid/side, parallel processing, swap, pre/post, you name it, it's there. It also has 2 stereo inputs and outputs with gains in 0.1dB per step and everything with the push of a button or turn of a k**b. And it gets even cooler, instant recall and automation because of digital control and the VST3 plugin.

Warning for all logic pro users! 🚩

Quite recently, logic pro has been updated with some cool new features. There is just one thing that brings logic back to 2002, that's the render settings.

Just this week I received 2 mixes for mastering being send as truncated 16bit files, which is not really the way you want it. It happened before but now I really started noticing this and so I did some research. It turns out that the latest update of logic resets the default render settings to 16bit and as far as I know, it even leaves dither off.. Please check that your render settings are correct! make sure it's set to at least 24bit but it would be best to set it to 32bit floating point as in the screenshot from above.

Back home after a great week in NYC. Jetlag is mostly gone after a 13hr sleep, so ready to go! Already took care of most emails and downloads. Though some downloadinks where expired in the meantime, which usually means it was a great holiday. It really was! Looking back to a great, intense, inspiring week. NYC is still one of my favorite cities in the world. Might even be my most favorite. Busy, but great fun and so much to see, feel, taste, hear, experience and adore. Now back home in the place that always sleeps, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht.

Today, the 4th if May, we remembered all war victims in the Netherlands and tomorrow, the 5th of May, we celebrate freedom. That made it extra special to visit the Field of Light at the Freedom Plaza in NYC.
We where extra Lucky because it was sold out (free of charge event) weeks in advance but the really friendly guys at the entrance let us in anyway. 💚

Went to the 20 years anniversary of yesterday. 20 years of stunning plugins that set the standard. Proud to be part of the bèta testing team for years already. Too bad we didn't catch up yesterday Frederik, but good to briefly meet up again Floris! Also cool to meet up with people which I haven't seen in 20 years, also meeting up with people u work with but never meet in real life. It was cool and was pretty amazing. For some reason she (and her great band) doesn't seem to be that big in the Netherlands. What I understood is that this was their first live performance in NL since over a year. How come?
Anyway.. Up to another 20 years of fabulous plugins dudes! 🌿

Now, slowly starting the day with a lot of mails and things and then, up to some cool music. Last couple of days before my holiday break. 🚕
