The Power of Music ⚡️

According to new research the sounds that wake you up could be affecting how groggy and clumsy you are in the morning. 😩

The study by RMIT University suggests that melodic alarms could improve your alertness levels, whereas using harsh alarm tones could increased levels of morning grogginess. 🧐

Co-author Associate Professor Adrian Dyer, from RMIT's School of Media and Communication and Digital Ethnography Research Centre, said:
"We think that a harsh 'beep beep beep' might work to disrupt or confuse our brain activity when waking, while a more melodic sound like the Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations' or The Cure's 'Close to Me' may help us transition to a waking state in a more effective way.” 🎵⏰

The findings were published in PLoS One. 🙌🏽

The Power of Music ⚡️

A study conducted in 2016 titled “Leveraging the power of music to improve science education” which was published by International Journal of Science Education, examined over 1,000 students in a three-part experiment, comparing learners' understanding and engagement in response to 24 musical and non-musical science videos. 🎵🔬🎥

The study found that: 

⚛️ K-16 students who viewed music videos improved their scores on quizzes about content covered in the videos, 🤓

⚛️ that students preferred the music content vs non-music content, 🔊

⚛️ and also suggested that content with music might lead to superior long-term retention of the content. 🧠

Hopefully the study can inspire innovative ways to improve science education via musical “edutainment” (Educational Entertainment). 🤔

Lead author Greg Crowther, Ph.D., a lecturer at the University of Washington said: "Music will always be a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, more traditional forms of teaching. But teachers who want to connect with their students through music now have some additional data on their side.” 💥

Every musical journey becomes greater with the sum of the talents of everyone involved. 🔥

Although the creative process behind each project has similar steps that involve:

✅ Creating a mood search and a creative brief.
✅ Writing sessions for demos.
✅ Vocal Recordings.
✅ Song production.
✅ Mixing & Mastering.

Tada - tada - tada tada tada - tada taaaaan!” 🎶🎵

Such a recognisable tune… 🦈 (by the way, the emoji is a shark, not a dolphin) 😂

Anyone who saw JAWS knows the tension this tune creates for the attack scenes. 

As soon as it starts one begins to feel worried for the swimmer or kids on the boat… you get the chills, the thrills, and start eating popcorn faster. 😬

As the song intensifies, you find yourself getting more nervous… 😰

And finally at its climax, someone else bites the dust… or the shark bites the victim… some audience members will close their eyes right before the action happens… 😱

And then… that tune continues to live outside the screen, bringing back the feeling of tension whenever we hear it… in fact, it is very likely that many of us have used it to create a situation among family and friends… hopefully without biting anyone. 🤪

So simple, yet so impactful and inmortal. 😎

Music is the most amazing tool to enhance emotions within a story… you just need to get the right tune. 🎵

A study from UCL found that the human brain can recognise a familiar song within 100 to 300 milliseconds, highlighting the deep hold favourite tunes have on our memory. 🎶

Researchers used electro-encephalography (EEG) imaging, which records electrical activity in the brain, and pupillometry (a technique that measures pupil diameter - considered a measure of arousal). 🧠 👁️

A research by the University of South Florida suggests that music volume can impact your decision on the choices we order from restaurant menus. 🎶🎵

That's because volume is proven to directly impact heart rate and arousal. 🔊♥️

Softer music has a calming effect, making us more mindful of what we order. This typically results in healthier choices, such as a salad. 🥬

Using different music genres including rock, folk, jazz, classical, marching band, experimental and heavy metal, they found that the subjective experience of music across cultures triggered the following 13 key emotions: 🎭

▪️ Amusement
▪️ Joy
▪️ Eroticism
▪️ Beauty
▪️ Relaxation
▪️Sadness
▪️Dreaminess
▪️Triumph
▪️Anxiety
▪️Scariness
▪️Annoyance
▪️Defiance

The right music helps create a strong emotional connection with audiences that goes beyond the screen, and can be as crucial to the experience as the TV program or movie itself. 🎬

Just think about the theme songs from JAWS, Star Wars, Friends, The Adams Family, and so many more. How many times have you sang these to set the mood for a moment with family, friends? Do you get goosebumps when you hear them at the start of the film or series? Are you immediately taken back to that particular world for a moment when you hear them elsewhere? 🤔 

That is the emotional connection at work! ❤️

From a business side, great music can bring a wonderful uplift to your franchise through live shows, music sales, licensing and more. Frozen, Paw Patrol, Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Lion King, Yo Gabba Gabba!, are great examples of the impact of music for franchises. 💥

Research by PHMG showed different melodies, chords, or key changes in songs can elicit responses. 🔊

For example, strings playing short and sharp notes in a major key were found to elicit feelings of happiness and excitement in 87% of respondents. 😆

Meanwhile, a shift from major to minor keys provoked a sense of sadness or melancholy in 83%, and 90% found acoustic guitar sounds to be caring, calm and sophisticated. 😌
