RESOLUTIONS OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS, AKWA IBOM STATE COUNCIL REACHED AT CONGRESS ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2023, IN UYO.
Congress, which was attended by the Political Adviser to the Governor, Akparawa Godwin Ntukude Ph.D, as a Special Guest, after extensive deliberations, resolved as follows;
1. Congress commended Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited for inaugurating the Host Communities Development Trust Fund and making payments into it, in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA, and called on the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, to play its oversight role effectively by sanctioning oil companies who have breached the PIA by refusing to inaugurate the Fund and make payments 14 months after the deadline.
2. Congress noted that 25 states in the country have signed on to the Open Government Partnership, OGP, and as a result, have attracted massive investments and funds from development partners, while Akwa Ibom state is yet to sign on to the OGP. It therefore, called on the State Government to join the elite states by signing on to the OGP in order to draw down the huge benefits from development partners to the state.
3. To reposition Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation, AKBC, and Akwa Ibom Newspaper Corporation, AKNC, publisher of the Pioneer Newspaper titles, Congress appealed to the State Government to discontinue the practice of appointing politicians to head the corporations as it has proved to be counter productive, pointing out that The Pioneer Newspaper had a good market visibility in the South- South, rich editorial content, huge readership base and was consistent in the publication of the three titles when Mrs. Ekaette Ekpo, Mr. Ikpong Essien Udom, and Mr. Marvelous Friday - Udo, all staff of the corporation held sway as General Manager/Editor-in- Chief.
4. Worried by the continued destruction of farmlands and clashes between herdsmen and farm owners in the state, Congress called for immediate implementation of the law against Open Grazing of cattle.
5. Also worried by the growing threat of gully erosion on a section of Uyo village road leading to Ntak Inyang, Congress called on the State Government to take urgent steps to arrest the situation.
6. While commending the State Government for establishing the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Agency, whose role in the healthcare delivery is enormous, Congress urged the Agency to step up its sensitisation campaign so that more persons would enroll into the health insurance scheme. Similarly, Congress appealed to the State Government to ensure the functionality of the Agency for it to effectively play the assigned role in the healthcare delivery chain.
7. Congress noted with dissatisfaction that Nsit Atai - Okobo Road has remained uncompleted six years after the first contract was awarded, a development that has made some sections of the road deplorable, thereby worsening the plight of motorists. Congress frowned at the high handedness of security personnel on the road who extort money from motorists, thereby adding to the already pathetic situation and called on security agencies in the state to check the excesses of their men.
