Yuletide: AKSEPWMA Promises Round the Clock Service
..As AKHA Environment Cmtte Chair Gives Kudos

As Akwa Ibom State prepares to join the world in celebrating the upcoming festive season, the Chairman of the State's Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) Hon. (Dr.) Prince Akpan Ikim, has announced the readiness of the Agency to provide round-the-clock waste management services before, during and after the yuletide.

This, according to the AKSEPWMA boss, is in order to keep the State clean, green and safe for its residents and visitors during the holiday and beyond.

Obong Ikim stated this while fielding questions from Newsmen on Saturday during the Statewide environmental sanitation exercise for the month of November.

The Security expert-cum-politician divulged that the Agency's top priority was to ensure that the State remains a healthy and enjoyable place for everyone in line with the ARISE Agenda of the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.

Flanked by the Chairman, House Committee on Environment who represents Okobo in the State House of Assembly; Hon. Bassey Pius, and other members of the Agency's management team, Ikim assured that the Agency is ready to tackle the anticipated increase in waste generation.

He stressed that ensuring a clean and safe environment for the people of Akwa Ibom State is the Agency's top priority, and they will do everything in their power to keep the State clean and healthy during the holidays and beyond.

His words: "Since we know that we will have a lot of people coming into Akwa Ibom, we will ensure that the entire State is clean and green beyond the festive period."

Continuing, the AKSEPWMA helmsman said: "like in the Christmas park, we have informed all kiosk owners to have a big cellophane bags where they must ensure they bag their waste and we will create a dump point for them. We will ensure that all waste generated at the park are evacuated every morning."

The Chairman assured that in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, AKSEPWMA is committed to making this holiday season a memorable one for the people of Akwa Ibom State. He encouraged everyone to look forward to an even cleaner and safer environment than ever before.

Collaborating the statement of the AKSEPWMA helmsman, the Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon. Bassey Pius, commended the Agency for its tireless efforts to fulfill its mandate. He said, "The Agency's plans for keeping the Christmas park clean and safe are truly commendable. My team and I will do everything in our power to remove any bottlenecks so that AKSEPWMA can deliver on its mission in accordance with the ARISE Agenda of His Excellency, the Governor."

He however appealed to residents to support the good work of AKSEPWMA and desist from acts capable of making life miserable for the environment and its inhabitants.

Meanwhile, following the Statewide sanitation exercise, which took place between 7am and 10am, a Post Sanitation exercise commenced and will last until Tuesday. A Mop Up Exercise will then be conducted from Tuesday to Friday to ensure that the State remains clean and safe for all residents and visitors. These exercises are being conducted in accordance with the schedule set by the AKSEPWMA and are part of the Agency's ongoing efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment for the people of Akwa Ibom.

Lawyer warns Nigeria Police, sister agencies against hasty detention of online publishers
-Barr. Ekemini Udim

A legal practitioner, Mr. Ekemini Udim, has warned Nigeria Police Force and sister security agencies against jumping at every request to arrest and detain an online publisher.

Udim spoke this at a seminar organised by the Conference of Online Publishers in Akwa Ibom (COOPA) held in Eden Hotel, Eket, Akwa Ibom State on Saturday.

‘‘Petitions should be carefully scrutinised in-house with media experts in the police and possibly with police lawyers so as to arrive at informed decisions on whether to publication complained of is defamatory at all,’’ he said.

Speaking on Legal Burden of Online Publishing and the Increasing Scourge of Harassment Faced by Bloggers & Social Media Influencers, he noted that online publishers, bloggers and social media influencers have become endangered species.

‘‘While we celebrate the beauty of online publishing, one cannot fail to mention the fact that in recent time, online publishers, bloggers and social media influencers have become endangered species. They have been haunted across the globe. In Nigeria, the situation is not better.

‘‘Many online publishers, bloggers and social media influencers have been arrested by the police and sister security agencies and detained for days un-end at the behest of some powerful members of society who walk the earth as the untouchables.

‘‘Today we have influential men and women in the Nigerian society who strongly believe that they are above criticism. That their activities should never be scrutinized by any journalist or any person born of a woman. Here lies the cross of the online publisher, blogger and influencer.

‘‘He is constantly on the radar of the security agencies and closely monitored. In most instances, the online journalist is not sure of the story that will annoy the political actor and activate his arrest and detention. In the course of my practice law, I have had occasion to defend journalists dragged to court by the police at the behest or instigation of the high and mighty.

‘‘The reality today is that there is indeed an existential threat to the online journalism profession. This is a serious matter for which society must address. If I am to itemise the names of online media practitioners that have been arrested, locked up and charged to court after much pressure, we certainly will not leave here today.

‘‘But the records are there for all to see and feel the impact of the increasing scourge of harassment faced by online publishers, bloggers & social media influencers. Some have even lost their lives in the course of duty,’’ the legal practitioner pointed out.

The outgone COOPA Chancellor, Ifreke Nsewo stressed the need for online to be ethical in the performance of their duty.

‘‘The need to be ethical in our jobs cannot be overemphasized because many bloggers and social media influencers are being targeted for harassment, intimidation and incarceration.

‘‘In fact, statistics now show that bloggers are now more endangered than core professional journalists. These happen because we have left loopholes in our publications which those who are affected by our publications have exploited to hound us. So, we must learn the ethics. We must be wise because if birds have learnt to fly without perching, hunters should also learn to shoot without missing,’’ Nsewo stated.

According to him, ‘‘So, we have brought Ekemini Udim to speak to us in the aspect of legal implications of this our job. You remember sometime last year, I was hounded and targeted for arrest and possible incarceration for publishing a document I sourced from the courts. So, let Barr. Udim tell us if I ran foul of the law by publishing what was merely a public document.’’

BREAKING NEWS 💥💥💥

BUA Cement reduces ex-factory cement prices to N3,500/bag effective October 2, 2023.
——- -
We refer to our previous pronouncements regarding our intent to reduce cement prices upon the completion of our new lines at the end of the year, in order to spur development in the building materials and infrastructure sectors.

As per the commitment made to reduce prices and following a periodic review of our operations for efficiency, the management of BUA Cement Plc wishes to announce and inform our esteemed customers, stakeholders, and the public that effective October 2, 2023, we have decided to bring the price reduction forward. As a result, BUA Cement would now be sold at an ex-factory* price of 3,500 Naira per bag so that Nigerians can begin to enjoy the benefits of the price reduction before the completion of our plants.

Upon completion of the ongoing construction of our new plants, which would increase our production volumes to 17million metric tonnes per annum, BUA Cement PLC intends to review these prices further in line with our earlier pronouncements by the first quarter of 2024.

NOTE: all pending, undelivered orders which had been paid for at the old prices will be reviewed downwards to N3500/bag in line with the new pricing from October 2, 2023. Our licensed dealers are also enjoined to ensure that end-users benefit from this reduction in ex-factory prices as we will monitor field sales to ensure compliance.

NIGERIA AT 63: Whether or Not to be

By Hero Akpata

There is nothing independent about this current Nigeria. Every indices that characterize an independent and sovereign nation is missing from Nigeria. A disposition of despair and helplessness have enveloped the younger generation, whose future has been mortgaged by the political class on the altar of greed, graft and nepotism.

I can not wish Nigeria a happy independence when every arms of government is at the mercy of the executives. I can not wish Nigeria a happy independence when there is a widening line between the rich and the poor. I can't wish a country that promotes injustice, lawlessness and inequality a happy independence. A country where lawmakers, executives and those around the corridors of powers are getting wealthy while ordinary people are getting poorer can not said to be independent.

That hope of a greater tomorrow is no longer there, that faith that inspires patriotism is long gone, that will to work together for a United prosperous Nigeria is now a mirage, all the reasons to believe there's a future to wait for in this land can't be grasped anymore, what is left is an unending decaying carcass of a failed union state. Let the truth be said no matter who it offends, Nigeria can no longer survive on the ingredients of lies being used by its leaders to spice up the taste while its citizens feel otherwise. Let the discussion ensue on the foundations of this British experiment by the various indigenous people wether to be or not to be. Whatever be the outcome should be implemented, but i strongly suggest a breakup will not be good enough.

NIGERIA AT 63: Which Way My Country

By Hero Akpata

Nigeria as a country has been plagued by numerous problems. We are conglomerate of different tribes, divided and full of hate. How did we get here? It is already part of history that our problems started when Lord Lugard forcefully merged us in 1914; since then, it has been from one problem to another.

On October 1, 1960, the British government granted independence and left us in the hands of selfish leaders. The truth about Nigeria is, we are not one: A country where you are either superior or inferior based on your ethnic background, is nothing but deception.

Politicians steal our money in droves each dispensation, promising a better life; alas we keep getting worse. In 2015, Nigerians in their multitude voted for the ruling party at the center with the hope of a promising change. 8 years later, we are in chains, yet to see the change. A country where the President doesn't care about the dying populace, regimes that hunts down opposition at will, a draconian government that has further divided us along ethnic and religious lines. I weep for Nigeria, the labours of our heroes past are now in vain!
We have become refugees in our own country. From the former to the present, the problems remain the same. We only see projects on the pages of newspapers, we never get to see them in reality.

Which way Nigeria? Truth is now a scarce commodity, only praise singers are seen as good democrats, from North to South and from East to West people are perpetually kept in darkness.
We now celebrate darkness and pay for darkness instead of celebrating progress, our politicians are celebrating political defections instead of celebrating technological advancement. Our politicians are celebrating 'crooked' electoral victory keeping the people perpetually poor so that they can buy their conscience for peanut. Which way Nigeria? Our roads are now death traps, yet each administration keeps blaming the previous ones. Our farmlands are now blood lands where a group of wicked herders truncate the lives of poor Nigerians, yet our President doesn't care.

Politics is now a business and a way of survival for a rich few who steal our resources and take them to foreign lands. They benefited from free education but make education too expensive for the poor.
Which way Nigeria? Are we on course?
I have given up on Nigeria, our youths are leaving the country in droves for foreign countries in search of a better life. No wonder Nigerians are treated as slaves and contrabands in other countries, we are no longer the pride of Africa, rather we've become a pain in the ads of Africa. I won't wish anyone a happy Independence day, rather I will wish you a happy new month. You might see me as a prophet of doom and a pessimist, but I will ask you a question, are we on course or are we cursed?

Happy New Month in advance!

Meet the five judges who will be delivering judgment at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal tomorrow

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal will on Wednesday, September 6, give its verdict on the suits filed by five political parties; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Action Alliance (AA), challenging the emergence of Bola Tinubu as winner of the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

The Nation reports that the sitting of the five-man panel of justices is headed by the presiding justice, Justice Haruna Tsammani. On the day of the final judgement, the five jurists will deliberate and possibly vote to take a final decision, in case there are disagreements on issues thrown up at trial. The judges presiding over the tribunal are:

1. Justice Haruna Tsammani – Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal

2. Justice Stephen Adah – Court of Appeal (Asaba division)

3. Justice Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf – Court of Appeal (Asaba Division)

4. Justice Moses Ugo – Kano division

POST SANITATION: IBIAM STREET AND ENVIRONS, CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL!

Today, the untiring and hardworking evacuators of the State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) on Post Sanitation, showed capacity when they desilted and cleared all debris in the Ibiam Street drains and environs.

Suffice to say without any equivocation that, it is the effort these gentlemen coupled with the excellent supervision of the Executive Chairman of the agency, Hon (Obong) Prince Ikim, that have helped our State to remain the cleanest since 2018 till date.

It however becomes imperative for you, the reader, to support efforts of AKSEPWMA by avoiding illegal dumping of waste and respecting environmental laws. By doing so, we would help the State government to Akwa Ibom clean and green.

ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU’S INSULT; WHY HE AND HIS SURROGATES MUST APOLOGIZE TO AKWA IBOM PEOPLE

The attention of the Akwa Ibom State PDP Campaign Council has been drawn to the very derisively contrived comments credited to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during the APC Presidential Campaign rally, held yesterday, January 30th, at the Nest of Champions, Uyo, on Akwa Ibom soil.

Tinubu at the said rally was heard saying thus “ Dear Akwaibomites, that Boy that calls himself Governor, that brought Atiku here, he lives in my backyard in Lagos, you people should tell him enough is enough. If not that we are one, I would have chased him away from Lagos, I will use lizards, pythons and scorpions to chase him away.”

We know of the several verbal gaffes, some logically bewildering and calling to question, the mental acuity of the APC Presidential Candidate and his capacity to execute the functions of the office he seeks. He however crossed the line with the statement credited to him.

By calling the Political Symbol, source of authority and identity of our people and State a ‘boy”, Tinubu has insulted, denigrated and stereotyped the entire people of Akwa Ibom State, and thus subtly elevated the previous noxious narrative from which our people have since Arisen (dakkada) and repudiated as those who are only good at certain layers of the Nigerian socio-political space.

Even if he was doused with substances he is famous for, that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State, would refer to an elected State Governor, a leader of over 7 million proud people, a State that is today, generally adjudged as Nigeria’s Best Kept secret; the only subnational with a thriving commercial airline, the state with perhaps the best road network and other infrastructure in the nation, a Seven-Star Governor as a ‘boy’ reveals him as the lowest of the gutter-snipes.

That Tinubu, a 70 year old man, though with a 62 year old daughter, aspiring to become the President of Nigeria, would subliminally threaten the safety of other Nigerians who have found residence in Lagos, as he did, by saying if “we are not one, I would have chased him away from Lagos” clearly exposes his ineptitude and inability to lead. The statement supports the stories of underhanded tactics that are being deployed in Lagos State by agents associated with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to deny other Nigerians the right to exercise their civic and constitutional responsibility of voting.

While we acknowledge the fact that his cognitive decline is at an advanced state, that he could refer to the Presidential Candidate of our great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) , Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as a former Senate President, a position our Candidate never occupied, is perplexing.

We hereby demand an immediate apology by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the people of Akwa Ibom State for calling our leader a ‘boy’ and also demand an immediate repudiation of the said statement by the Akwa Ibom State APC chieftains, notably Senator Godswill Akpabio who stood there at the podium and cheered as their Presidential Candidate, insulted the collective identity and pride of the Akwa Ibom people.

POLICE COMMENDS POLICE INSPECTOR FOR PROFESSIONALISM, POSITIVE REPRESENTATION

Charges Officers to Emulate Good Conduct, Be Worthy Ambassadors

The Nigeria Police Force has commended a female Police Officer, Inspector Justina Rita Omogbai, attached to the Traffic Unit of the Sabo Divisional Headquarters in Lagos State, for her commitment and acts of professionalism displayed in the course of her traffic duties and for positively representing the Force amongst the community, particularly to school children crossing the road at her duty post, by taking personal steps to ensure they are properly dressed and safe while heading to and from school.

The NPF noted that her gesture aligns with the Community Policing tenets and the concept of “Catching Them Young”, as the formative age is very vital to training children to be law-abiding and compliant with regulations; and her singular action brings to their memories the standard practice of Nigeria Police Traffic Officers.

While commending the officer, the Inspector-General of Police charged all officers and men to emulate her good conduct and be shining examples in their respective jurisdictions. He equally tasked officers to be law-abiding even as they sow the seed of appropriate civic behaviour in the minds and hearts of members of their communities, particularly the young ones, who can serve as evangelists of values and good potentials of the NPF contrary to the present erroneous perception.
