Asuquo Ekpe, the scorer of Nigeriaโ€™s first ever goal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Since Nigeria made her debut in the 1963 AFCON in Ghana, there have been a number of memorable moments. However, one of such moments was Nigeriaโ€™s first ever goal in the competition. This feat was achieved by Asuquo Ekpe, earning him a place forever in the history books.

Asuquo Ekpe made his international debut for Nigeria on 6 Oct,1956 against Togo. He played his club football with Welch XI, Lagos Railways, Secretariat FC, Ibadan Lions, and Western Rovers during his active footballing career.

Asuquo became the first Nigerian to score in the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring on the 73rd minute in a 6-3 defeat to United Arab Republic (Egypt). Nigeria also lost her second game four nil to Sudan a result that confirmed Nigeriaโ€™s elimination from the 1963 Afcon in Ghana.

The Nigerian eighteen-man player to the 1963 Afcon was led by Brazilian Jorge Augusto Pena who was the head coach of the Green Eagles as they were then called.

Asuquo Ekpe won "24 caps,14 goals"for Green Eagles during his career that lasted from 1956 to 1963.

He was the older sibling of another Green Eagles star Effiong Ekpe and nephew of the famous Etim Henshaw, Who played for Duke Town Primary & Secondary Schools in the 1940s-1950s and was captain of the first national team that tour UK in 1949. In the match against Dahomey on 2 Feb,1963, they ( Asuquo & Effiong Ekpe) became the first siblings to play for Nigeria in the same game. The went on to play together for Nigeria a number of times. This earned him the nickname "Ekpe Senior".

Asuquo Ekpe died on 30th of January 2016 in calabar.

Aโ€™IBOM DEEP SEAPORT PROJECT'S LOCATION AND NAME-CHANGE: POLITICS, MARGINALIZATION OR NECESSITY?

By UbongAbasi Ise | THE RIGHTS GUARDIAN | JUNE 2021

Wants of jobs for teeming unemployed population in Akwa Ibom, and governmentโ€™s quest to boost domestic revenue profile have primarily made the Ibom Deep Seaport and Industrial City projects the mother of all initiatives in recent times. It is believed that at completion, the operation of the seaport would inspire commerce and industrialization with over 300,000 jobs provided on a go. But before the project move away from paperwork phase to geophysical site, it has already caught up in the vortex of interests. So far, different sections and individuals in the state and beyond have particularized their interests overtly and covertly towards this prospected world-class seaport and its accompanying industrial hub. To Oron nation, who are inhabiting the south-eastern portion of the Atlantic coast in the state, the finally approved site for the harbour and subsequent change of name from โ€˜Ibakaโ€™ to โ€˜Ibomโ€™ Deep Seaport have vitiated their dream of playing host to a seaport touted to become one of the best in Africa. It was this loud agitation over the location and name-change of the project that prompted the meeting between the officials of the Akwa Ibom State Government and the stakeholders of Oron nation on Saturday 17th April 2021 at Oron Civic Centre.

At the meeting, a delegation of Akwa Ibom State government which include the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, the State Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr. Akan Okon, the Chairperson of Technical Committee on Ibom Deep Seaport, Barr (Mrs.) Mfon Usoro, and other state government officials took turns to explain to the host how the present site of the seaport project was arrived at contrary to allusion to political interest and influence. The meeting was going on smoothly and almost ended in a gentlemanly manner when Engr. Mkpubre Okon Mkpubre, the Chairman of Oro Technical Committee on Deep Seaport who virtually joined through Zoom, raised the tone and voice to express what he described as the marginalization of Ibaka, stating that Oron nation is strongly against relocation of the project site from Okposo near Ibaka Bay to Unyenghe where he claimed was annexed to Ibeno by late Brigadier U.J. Esuene, the former military governor of the then South-Eastern State. Mkpubre, who is the former managing director of Engineering, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and currently the Managing Consultant, Green Seas International Nig. Ltd, emphasized Okposo as a natural harbour suitable for seaport project, mentioning that a petition dated March 15, 2021 had already been sent to Governor Udom Emmanuel by Oron Union. He tasked the Chairman of Oro Think-Tank Committee, Prince Chris Abasi Eyo, to leave the copy of the petition with the Ibom Deep Seaport Implementation Committee of the state government for proper understanding of their position.

POSITION OF ORON NATION

The petition to Governor Udom Emmanuel was against what Oron Union termed as the relocation of โ€˜Ibakaโ€™ Deep Seaport from the preferred location near the natural harbour at Ibaka Bay, to be built as a dug-out port, which they claimed is an artificial ocean created on land. Secondly the petition speculated against digging out an artificial ocean (1km2) out of scarce land anywhere near Oron nation; and dumping of excavated sand near Oron land and water territory.

The union said apart from former governor Victor Attahโ€™s choice of Ibaka as the best location for deep seaport, the Nigerian Government in time past had made some moves to site a Deep Seaport at Ibaka which seems to be the most suitable location for a viable seaport that could carry the needed tonnage of sea freight. According to them, ... Click the link to continue http://ubongabasiise.blogspot.com/2021/06/aibom-deep-seaport-projects-location.html?m=1

The former name of this human rights newspaper was, THE RIGHTS JOURNAL. The vision, mission, objectives, thematic thrusts, coverage dimension of community, human rights and civil society, strategic, and circulation spread describes the nomenclature of the newspaper as a Human Rights newspaper. But, it operated as a human rights newsletter, which served a specific readership audience. This made it limited.
Changing the name to THE RIGHTS GUARDIAN admits it into the regular mold of a specialized newspaper that carves out a niche for itself. It is no longer a newsletter with its limitations, but now flying on the wings of wider readership, across the broad spectra of audience without losing its thematic foci areas of Community, Human Rights, and Civil Society. It will continue to report and analyze issues in the direction of the foci areas.
THE RIGHTS GUARDIAN, as the name choice of the newspaper, was selected from the list of names approved after an application for the ISSN was made. The name sat well with the vision, mission and objectives of the newspaper. The unanimity by the Editorial Board in accepting the name, showed that the drive was right. It shall indeed remain a flagship in the human rights community.
It shall remain a resilient national human rights newspaper, with reportage from all states of the federation. State, national and international institutions would be served, and it shall not be afraid of reporting the facts of events. It shall be a reference resource in research and the dissemination of credible information as far as human rights issues in Nigeria is concerned.
No price tag is fixed as it shall be distributed FREE to members of the public who subscribe to the ideals of the newspaper. There shall be individual, organizational and institutional subscribers. A List-Serve shall be created across Nigeria where both hard and soft copies would be distributed to subscribers. The publication is presently a monthly newspaper supported by sacrifices made through contributions as well as subscriptions, donations, grants and gifts. It shall remain apolitical.
Welcome to an era of a robust and healthy human rights reportage in NIGERIA.

THE GENERAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

"I receive daily security reports on the attacks on critical national infrastructure, and it is very clear that those behind them want this administration to fail. Whoever wants the destruction of the system will soon have the shock of their lives. Weโ€™ve given them enough time.

"I received a briefing today from the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on the series of attacks on their facilities nationwide. These attacks are totally unacceptable, and we will not allow those behind them to achieve their evil objectives.

"I have assured INEC that we will make available to them everything they need to operate efficiently, so that no one will say we donโ€™t want to go, or that we want a third term. There will be no excuse for failure. We will meet all of INECโ€™s demands.

"In the area of security, we have changed the Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General, and we are demanding that they rise fully to the challenges confronting us. There must be zero tolerance for all those those bent on destroying our country by promoting crime and insurrection!

"Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand."

CROCODILE, PLEASE CRY NO MORE

By UbongAbasi Ise

One undisclosed official of government had recently mocked some public affairs commentators that routinely go to radio stations in Uyo to vent their minds on the issues in the state. He said their cries and criticisms on Udom Emmanuelโ€™s government wonโ€™t go beyond Akwa Ibom ambit; hence, the radio critics are knocking their heads on the wall for nothing.

Indeed, criticizing the Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of Mr. Udom Emmanuel has become a colossal waste of time, energy and intellect. The government is no longer listening. The media seems tired and worn out. The civil society organizations appear exhausted. Opposition elements are now viewed as toothless little dogs by the power that be: their feeble barks no longer scare anyone in government. Underperformance, failure, imperviousness and pig-headedness of this administration are no longer peeving the people because they have become a new normal. The state government seems to have nothing to fear as it appears to consistently be trampling upon the socio-economic and cultural rights of the people. If you like, cry your lungs out, it would change nothing.

The press statement released in the early hours of Monday 3rd May 2023 by the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade Ini Ememobong, on behalf of the Akwa Ibom State Government in regards to the abduction, r**e and gruesome murder of Akwa Ibom job seeker, Miss Iniubong Umoren, was just a shedding of crocodile tears and outright mockery of the dead. The desire of the State Governor for the administration of justice as expressed in the statement appears to be a travesty of conscience. The subsequent visit to the deceased family in Oruk Anam by the officials of the state government led by the SSG, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem was just a spectacle for the media. In the first place, Udomโ€™s government brought panic and desperation upon the unemployed graduates in the state through misplacement of priorities which results in creating mass unemployment situation where conmen and swindlers take advantage of and aggravate the frustration of jobless youths in the state. It was out of desperation for job that landed that enterprising, promising young woman in the jaws of death. The misplacement of priorities has become the trademark of Udomโ€™s government. Before her untimely death, late Iniubong Umoren, through her tweet posted on April 26, 2021 at 9:02pm, had pointed to the world the rudderless and inept nature of the Akwa Ibom State Government under Udom Emmanuel. According to her Twitter handle , โ€œI get really confused anytime I remember that my state governor spent a lot of money to build a church in the state where the number of churches present is almost greater than the number of citizens.โ€ Yes, Iniubong apparently was one of the million voices beseeching Governor Udom Emmanuel not to splurge about N10 billion on an ecumenical center but to use Akwa Ibom funds strategically for job creation in order to cut down unemployment levels in the state which the National Bureau of Statistics recently positioned as the second state with the highest unemployment rate in the country, recording 42.5%.

A Catholic Church Reverend Father at Archdiocese of Abuja, Rev. Fr. John Chinenye Oluoma while preaching during a Newlife programme in April 2021, expressed astonishment that Akwa Ibom State Governor could spend about N10 billion on mega worship center despite alarming rate of unemployment. He said, โ€œI am hearing that a governor in the South-South is spending N10 billion to build an ecumenical center, a place for worship for all Christians; that is a governor from Akwa Ibom state. I am sure in our hearts we would be clapping for him that he is a Christian. How many industries have they built? Why are you building another house of God in a state where I am sure that you canโ€™t count the number of churches? Do you know how many agro-allied industries N10 billion can build for a state where I am sure there are thousands of jobless youths? You build the church and the jobless people now come to the church and would be praying not knowing that their jobs are where they are standing.โ€

That came from a man of God who ordinarily would have welcomed an idea of building a place of worship for God. Like Rev. Fr. Oluoma suggested, N10 billion could have established a lot of agro-allied industries with the capacity to lift thousands of job-seekers off the streets while leaving the state with food sufficiency and surplus for export. The priest likened Akwa Ibom State to people who cut down their mango tree, while using the timber for the construction of a church under which they would pray to God to give them mangoes. โ€œWhy canโ€™t they have sense?โ€ the reverend father had to ask. Late Iniubong Umoren was equally confused that a state governor and a professional in banking sector whose knowledge of economics is thought to be encyclopedic could misdiagnose the needs of Akwa Ibom people.

If the state government had emphasized the establishment of agro-based industries in lieu of ecumenical center as suggested by the clergyman, Iniubong, as ambitious as she apparently was, might have directed her energies towards getting a job at any of the industries. The tragedy that befell her would have been averted. But sadly, we have a government that builds a worship center where all the unemployed youth are expected to go and pray to get a job as the catholic reverend father had said. Was it not Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State that budgeted N4.7billion for scholarships, while sponsoring 107 students abroad to acquire critical skills that would enable the beneficiaries to create job opportunities on their return and to boost domestic economy? Mr. Udom Emmanuel has configured his government to represent anything that serves as albatross to human and educational development. A government that refuses to develop human capacity is not only anti-people but a killer of dreams and future. It is not that Mr. Udom Emmanuel is not acknowledged this fact. While the Governor was mourning the demise of late Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (Rtd) at the deceased hometown, Ikot Nya in Nsit Ibom local government area on February 6, 2021, he was heard quoting a Hellenistic thinker, Pericles, that โ€œWhat you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.โ€ But emerging facts pointing to alarming rate of unemployment in the state and poor investment in education shows that the governor was only making mockery of the discernment of Akwa Ibom people. At the time Iniubong was ensnared for wants of job, the staffers of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) were on strike over the state governmentโ€™s refusal to pay entitlement arrears of 279 staff that were employed since 2014, including owing of outstanding 25% of the staff salary that spanned for the period of over 10 months as well as refusal to pay 2019/2020 leave grants. While the kerfuffle last, our youths studying at AKSU continue to stay at home with their educational future just hanging on a hook.

In fact while Mr. Udom Emmanuel was serving Akwa Ibom as the Secretary to the State Government, about 22,000 Akwa Ibomites applied for teaching job at the State Secondary Education Board (SSEB) and 5,000 were recruited and issued with appointment letters. When Mr. Udom Emmanuel was transmuted to governor in 2015, he sacked the staff while classrooms were begging for teachers. In early 2021, he called for the recruitment of just 1,000 teachers but over 47,000 Akwa Ibom youth that endure years of unemployment applied for the teaching job. If it is as alleged in a section of the media that the slots for the job have already been shared and distributed amongst the top guns in the PDP, then, it means that the poor applicants were just stressed for nothing.

The youths of Akwa Ibom State should demand immediate suspension of the International Worship Centre project just for the honor of late Miss Iniubong Umoren who has paid the price of governmentโ€™s missteps that lead to mass unemployment. The youths should call for Unemployment Summit where they would interact with their governor to vet job situation in the state and chart a way out of the present predicament. The death of the young unemployed graduate should be a rallying point for active participation of the youths in the affairs of governance in the state.

While preparing to vote and to bring in another administration in 2023, the youths should learn from the mistakes of the past. They should look out for the antecedents of every candidate and should be audacious enough to register a big statement that would become a good riddance of bad rubbish.
