Accountant General explains why some workers are yet to receive salaries.

The Accountant General of the State, Dr. Njum Onyemenam has given reasons why some government workers in the State were yet to receive their salaries.

Briefing news men at the Government House, Umuahia in company of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu and Director In- Charge, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Umeh Chiedozie, the Accountant General identified a
number of factors as responsible for the delay.

She identified some gaps in the payroll as the names of deceased workers were found, wrong BVN, duplicate account numbers and BVN, two names with the same BVN, incomplete or excess bank account number issues , difficulty in paying those with Microfinance banks , issues of those who missed the last verification excercise of government among others as militating against the salary payment.

She appealed to workers, especialy those in the Local Government Areas yet to receive their salaries to report to their Heads of Service or Treasurers who would in turn bring such reports to the Office of the Accountant General .

Dr. Njum Onyemenam further urged workers to be patient with the State government on the issues of payments as Governor Alex Otti led administration is creating a digitalized central salary payment platform that would be smarter, better for all. She assured that once the processes of central payment is completed, payments in the State would become seamless.

The Accountant General, who informed that the arrears of May salaries, salaries of those omitted and ratified would be paid this weekend, said that June and July pensions of LGAs would be paid next week. She equally restated the commitment of the present administration to meeting up with the December, 2023 deadline of defraying all salaries and emoluments owed government workers in the State by past administrations.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu said the 5 percent stipend recently approved by Governor Alex Otti would be paid to Traditional Rulers by next week, starting with June and July. He said that every LGA would get its 5 percent as due to it.

The Commissioner also disclosed that government has colated names of Traditional Rulers and said their real number would soon be made public, adding that the acclaimed number of about 700 is not real.
