Hard time looms as NNPCL, Marketers class over Petrol Subsidy, pegs price at 1200 Naira Per Ltr.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and fuel marketers under the aegis of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, on Tuesday, clashed again over the removal of subsidy on petrol.

This came against the backdrop of the depreciation of the naira against the United States dollar at both the official Investors & Exporters Window and the parallel market.

On Tuesday, the local currency closed at 998/dollar at the official market, while it traded at 1,225/dollar at the black market.

On the back of the falling naira rate, economists and oil marketers said PMS subsidy was increasing in recent times, but the NNPC quickly countered these positions and declared that it was recovering its full cost on the importation of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, countering the positions of The Chief Executive Officer, Financial Derivatives Company, Bismarck Rewane, had during a live television programme on ChannelsTV on Sunday, explained that fuel subsidy was not removed but reduced.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has frowned at the many man-made encumbrances regarding change of passport data by Nigerians, especially married women, saying it is a “stupid practice” to subject such women to the rigours of travelling to the Nigeria Immigration Service NIS headquarters in Abuja just to effect a data change.

Speaking at a recent dinner with members of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu ABAT Media Centre and some social media influencers in Abuja, Hon. Tunji-Ojo said there is nowhere in the world where women are subjected to such inhuman practice on account of marriage.

He queried whether immigration personnel in Abuja have more than one heads as opposed to those in the various passport offices across the Federation.

“There is one stupid thing I have seen and it is that a woman gets married, changes her name and then she has to come to Abuja all the way from say Kaura Namoda or Enugu just to come and effect a change of name in her passport. It is absurd.

“I can’t just figure it that you want to change just your name and you have to be in Abuja. I have asked the immigration people, is it that immigration people in Abuja have more than one head than those in the states?” He asked.

Gambian pastor absconds with 52 phones, money after Ibadan crusade

A pastor, Dr. Owen Abraham, has allegedly absconded with 52 phones, money and other valuables of worshippers that attended a crusade he organised at Aponrin in Agbowo area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The said crusader, according to some of his victims, said he was led by God to come to Ibadan from The Gambia for the crusade.

Abraham, on the last day of the three-day crusade, claimed that the Holy Spirit directed him to tell people to hand in their phones and valuables, only to later abscond with them.

The Pastor and the Bishop: Something good for a change
The victims said Abraham, who lured them into three days fasting and prayer, was nowhere to be found on the last day of the crusade, as all efforts to reach him proved abortive.

A victim, Mrs Grace Akintola, who spoke with Vanguard, said many widows went for the crusade because the said pastor promised to give each person a bag of rice and money, adding that Abraham also promised to empower students with scholarship.

Mrs Akintola, a widow, while recounting her ordeal said: “The pastor approached an Igbo lady in our area to assist him to gather widows and students, saying he wanted to help us.

“Someone in my area invited me for the crusade. He wore pastor regalia. He said he will buy a house for one of us and that the house will be fully furnished.

“He promised some people that attended the crusade money. Even politicians cannot give out such amounts he promised.

“On the last day of the crusade, he sold a bottle of water for us at the rate of N4,800. He said perfume is inside the bottle water. Many people paid for the water.”

Another victim, a student of University of Ibadan (UI) who pleaded anonymity, said the pastor ordered them to fast for three days.

The student added that the evangelist collected their phones “so as to keep it away from them and focus on the prayers”. “Unknowingly, it was a trick to get our belongings,” the victim said.

“He said no phone should ring, that was why he collected all the phones. In fact, a lady stood up and wanted to take his photographs but he seized the phone from her.

“On the last day of the crusade, he said he wanted to go and rest at the hotel where he lodged. He later said he wanted to go and eat at UI; we don’t know how he escaped with our belongings.

“As a man of God, we respected him a lot, we didn’t know that he wanted to use the name of God to dupe us,” the student-victim added.

Meanwhile, Abraham has been declared wanted by people in the area, as posters bearing his name and pictures have been circulated within the area to track him down.

IGP, PORTO LAUNCHES POLICE REFORMS DOCUMENTS, STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION MATERIALS

As IGP Alkali Pledges Continual Commitment to Police Reform Initiative

Police Standard Operating Procedures Launched

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, NEAPS, fdc, CFR, on Tuesday 4th April 2023 received officials from the Police Reform and Transformation Office (PORTO), Presidency, led by its Chief Executive Officer and Senior Special Adviser to the President on Research and Strategy, Mr. Tunji Lardner on an official visit to handover Nigeria Police Force Strategic Communication Materials and other working tools produced by Supporting Police Reform Processes in Nigeria (SPRPiN) project led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Security Sector Reform Foundation (GS-Foundation) in collaboration with PORTO, CLEEN Foundation, the NPF and the office of Chief of Staff to the President.

Mr. Lardner noted that the project is part of the support to the Police Reform Initiative in Nigeria to shape perceptions and enhance awareness of the law and the ongoing Police Reform process. The materials launched include 2,000 copies of the Police Act, 2020; 2,000 copies of the Presidential Roadmap on Police Reform; 4,000 copies of Frequently Asked Questions produced in English, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo; and 1,000 flash drives containing various legislations on policing in Nigeria. The e-copies of the materials are available for download on the Nigeria Police and the CLEEN Foundation websites.

Similarly, the IGP in conjunction with the European Union (EU) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), launched newly produced Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) on Conduct of Investigations; Arrest and Management of Persons in Police Detention and Custody; Conducting Investigative Interviewing; Search and Seizures; Identification Parade; and Conducting Stop and Search to boost smooth investigation, interrogation, and effective use and enforcement of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) in Nigeria. The documents have been produced and circulated to officers and men having undergone necessary training sessions which will be continuous.

The Inspector-General of Police appreciated the efforts of the PORTO, the British Council, and ICRC towards fostering reforms in the policing system of the country. He expressed the commitment of the NPF towards fruitful partnerships for effective communication of the Presidential Reform Agenda across board and sustainable reforms in the NPF.

DHQ explains presence of UN combat vehicles in Benin

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said there is no cause for alarm over the presence of United Nations (UN) peacekeeping armoured vehicles and other equipment sighted in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The video footage of a convoy of military grade weapons all painted in UN colours and inscribed with UN Peacekeeping Mission were seen moving in Benin City on Sunday night, a development that prompted the residents to raise concerns.

While some wondered if the country was at war that necessitated the presence of external forces, others asked if there was need for people to be worried.

But the DHQ, in a statement yesterday in Abuja by its acting spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, said the fighting vehicles and equipment sighted were for forces being mobilised for UN mission.

“The Defence Headquarters wishes to react to some social media video clips being circulated arising from the presence of some United Nations Peacekeeping fighting vehicles and equipment sighted recently in Benin, Edo State. This has resulted in insinuations which are inimical to public peace and may even cause panic.

“The Defence Headquarters hereby states that presently, Nigeria is contributing troops to various United Nations peace-keeping operations, the most recent is United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), Southern Sudan.

“The Mission is commanded by a Nigerian, Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr. It should be noted that the UN doesn’t have its own troops; rather, it enters into agreement with troops contributing countries to provide their personnel and equipment for operations in its various missions.

“Therefore, it is imperative to state emphatically that the military fighting vehicles and equipment painted in UN colour, as sighted, are being moved through the Warri Port for movement to the mission area in Southern Sudan to marry up with our troops who were inducted into UNISFA Mission last month.

“The Defence Headquarters under the leadership of General Lucky Irabor, CFR, wishes to assure Nigerians that our nation is not under any threat that will warrant the deployment of United Nations troops in our soil,” Gusau said.

Obi warned against fanning insurrection

The Federal Government has admonished the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi from inciting people to violence over the outcome of the Presidential elections.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed gave the admonition in Washington DC during his official engagements with some international media organisations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister is in Washington to engage with international media organisations and Think-tanks on the just concluded 2023 polls.

NAN also reports that the minister had so far engaged respectively with the “Washington Post”, Voice of America, Associated Press and Foreign Policy Magazine.

During the respective interactions with the media organisations, the minister said it was wrong for Obi on one breadth to seek redress in court over the outcome of the polls and on another breadth inciting people to violence.

The Ace Islamic Scholar Sheikh Muideen Ajani Bello was the Guest lecturer while Sheik Abdul Majeed Alawaye was on ground to thrill the audience with sound knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence as the Host Lecturer.

It has in attendance dignitaries from various walks of life, including the Basorun of Oyo and the entire Oyo Meesi, the High Chiefs of Oyo various Oyo Settlements.

The Programme as in attendance Ayaba Ramat Adeyemi (Iya Ilekoto), Sheikh Mainasara -The Amir Of Oyo, Sheik Larubawa, Councilor’s Forum from across the state, Party Leadership of leading political parties from across the State.

Political Bigwigs in attendance includes representatives of Alhaja Senator Mosura Sumonu, Alhaji Bisi Olopoeeyan, Executive Chairman of Oyo East Local Government Hon. Arowosaye Saheed Adeyemi and his counterparts from Atiba and Oyo West Local Government- Hon. Alhaja Kafilat Lakojo and Hon Akeem Olukitibi respectively.
