Linda Ikeji, the prominent Nigerian blogger, has decided that her son, Jayce, will continue to bear her surname rather than his father’s. Linda’s relationship with Sholaye Jeremi, Jayce’s father, has been complex and fraught with challenges. Initially, she believed their relationship was headed towards a future together, but differences in their lifestyles and Jeremi’s discomfort with her public life led to their separation.

After their breakup, Linda decided to change Jayce’s surname from Jeremi to Ikeji, emphasizing her independence and the strong support she receives from her family.

Linda believes that having her surname reflects her commitment and the central role she plays in her son’s life. She has also expressed that being a single mother, though not what she originally envisioned, has been a fulfilling journey

Toyin Abraham, a prominent Nigerian actress, has been facing significant backlash for her support of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during the 2023 elections. Many Nigerians have criticized her for endorsing Tinubu, given the long-standing issues in Lagos under APC’s rule, such as bad roads and illegal taxes.

Additionally, some critics have highlighted the contrast between her movie roles, where she often fights for justice and the oppressed, and her political stance in real life. This perceived hypocrisy has further fueled the backlash against her. Social media reactions have been intense, with users questioning her motives and expressing disappointment, leading to calls for boycotts of her films.

After days of tension and a nationwide strike, a sigh of relief can be heard across Nigeria as the government and labour unions reached a tentative agreement on a new minimum wage.

The breakthrough came late on Monday, June 3rd, following a marathon meeting between representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the federal government. President Bola Tinubu himself emphasized his commitment to a minimum wage “higher than N60,000.”

While this marks a significant step towards ending the strike, the exact amount is yet to be determined. Negotiations will continue throughout the week with daily meetings between the parties to finalize the new national minimum wage.

This agreement is a welcome development for millions of Nigerians struggling with rising living costs. The outcome will be closely watched as it has the potential to impact the nation’s economic landscape.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has proposed an increase in the minimum wage to over ₦60,000.

This offer is part of ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the strike action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The NLC has been pushing for a higher minimum wage to improve the living standards of workers amid rising inflation and economic challenges.

If accepted, this proposal could lead to the end of the strike, bringing relief to various sectors affected by the industrial action.

On June 3rd, 2024, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) revoked the banking license of Heritage Bank Plc due to its declining financial performance which posed a threat to the stability of the Nigerian financial system. The CBN had previously engaged with the bank to try to improve its situation, but unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful.

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has been appointed as the liquidator for Heritage Bank. This means they will be responsible for overseeing the closure of the bank and protecting depositors’ funds.

A Lagos woman, Bilikis Adeyinka, has been sentenced to six months in prison for hawking naira notes. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction after arresting Adeyinka in the Ikeja area while she was selling N897,900 in cash.

Hawking naira notes is considered an offense under Section 21(4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2007. Adeyinka reportedly pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The judge also offered Adeyinka the option of a N50,000 fine in place of the jail term. The EFCC believes this case serves as a deterrent to others who might engage in similar activities.

In a move that has sparked widespread debate, President Bola Tinubu has signed a bill into law that reinstates Nigeria’s old national anthem. The decision, announced today, has been met with mixed reactions from across the nation.

The old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was used from 1960 to 1978, will replace the current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” in all official capacities. Proponents of the change argue that the old anthem better reflects Nigeria’s history and cultural heritage. They believe it embodies the spirit of the nation’s founding and resonates more deeply with its citizens.
Critics, however, see this move as a step backward, questioning the necessity and timing of the change. Many are concerned about the financial implications of such a switch, including the costs associated with updating official documents, school materials, and other state paraphernalia.

Others argue that the current anthem, in use for over four decades, has become a significant part of Nigeria’s identity and changing it could cause unnecessary division.

Political analysts suggest that this decision might be part of a broader strategy by the Tinubu administration to invoke a sense of nostalgia and national pride amid current economic and social challenges. Nonetheless, the controversy surrounding the bill highlights the deep-seated divisions in public opinion regarding Nigeria’s past and future.

As the nation prepares to transition back to the old anthem, the coming days will likely see an increase in public discourse and debate over the implications of this significant change.

29/05/2024

In a surprising turn of events, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has revised its forecast for global unemployment in 2024. The UN agency now predicts a slight decline, with the unemployment rate expected to fall to 4.9%, down from their previous estimate of 5.2%. This represents a modest improvement compared to the 5.0% unemployment rate recorded in 2023.

However, experts caution that this positive development shouldn’t overshadow persisting issues. The ILO report warns of significant inequalities within the job market, particularly regarding gender. Women, especially in low-income countries, continue to face greater challenges in finding employment.

“Despite our efforts to reduce global inequalities, the labour market remains an uneven playing field,” stated ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo in a press release. The report revealed a stark gender gap, with the unemployment rate for women in high-income countries reaching 9.7%, compared to 7.3% for men. The disparity is even more concerning when considering women who have entirely left the workforce.

The ILO’s revised forecast offers a glimmer of hope for the global job market. Nevertheless, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle to create a more equitable and inclusive work environment for all.

Nigeria’s labour unions are holding firm in their demand for a significant hike in the minimum wage, rejecting the latest proposal of ₦60,000 ($138 USD) from the federal government.

The unions argue that the offered increase fails to address the harsh realities faced by Nigerian workers. With inflation hovering around 33%, they claim the proposed ₦60,000 won’t even cover basic necessities.

Labour leaders further highlight the vast disparity between the economic experiences of the wealthy and working class. They argue that the minimum wage should provide a living wage sufficient to support a family, a standard they believe the current offers fall far short of achieving.

Adding another layer of concern, some states haven’t even been fulfilling the current ₦30,000 minimum wage. Unions are pushing for a substantial increase that can be realistically implemented across the entire nation.

The proposed counter-offer from the unions sits at a much steeper ₦494,000 ($1142 USD), a figure the government has deemed unrealistic. Negotiations are set to continue until the May 31st deadline, with the possibility of further actions from the unions if an agreement isn’t reached.

Nigerians are facing a surge in tomato prices and limited availability of the essential ingredient, with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, attributing the issue to a widespread farm infestation.

In a statement released on Monday, Kyari acknowledged the public’s concerns about the rising cost of tomatoes. He explained that a significant number of tomato farms have been affected by a severe infestation known as “Tomato Ebola” or “Tomato Leaf Miner.” This pest infestation has drastically reduced tomato yields, leading to the current market situation.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is taking steps to address the problem. Kyari outlined plans to deploy agricultural experts to the affected areas to control and eliminate the infestation. Additionally, the ministry will be supporting farmers with resources and guidance to help them recover their crops as quickly as possible.

It remains to be seen how long it will take for tomato production to return to normal levels and for prices to stabilize.

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage is making headlines after revealing she faced restrictions on performing in her home country early in her career due to what was deemed “indecent dressing.”

In a recent interview with BET, Savage spoke candidly about her experiences, stating, “When I first moved back [to Nigeria], I would turn up at a show and they would say I can’t perform because my outfit was too risqué. It was a cultural issue.”
Savage went on to explain that some of her music videos were also pulled from airplay for similar reasons. “Even some of my first music videos were not played on television because they were considered indecent,” she said.

Despite these initial challenges, Savage persevered. “I wasn’t even wearing bikinis,” she remarked, hinting at the subjectivity of the restrictions. “The dresses were getting more revealing... They were bashing me online. But my fanbase, my followers, was growing. So they had to put me on shows and play my music because there was a demand for it.”

Savage’s comments spark a conversation about the intersection of artistic expression, cultural norms, and the evolving landscape of fashion in Nigeria.
