Protest erupts as Nigerian man passes away in South African Police custody

Nigerians living in South Africa have staged a protest over the d3ath of one Jeremiah Offorbike Okoye while in police custody.

The Nigerians Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), the organisation representing the protesters, has called for justice for the 50-year-old Okoye, who reportedly di3d on Monday, 13 January 2025, in Limpopo, South Africa.

NICASA President, Frank Onyekwelu, revealed in a statement that Okoye, originally from Nnewi in Anambra State, had lived in South Africa for 22 years. The exact cause of his death remains unknown.

According to him, “Investigations are ongoing as to what led to his untimely d3ath. We implore the police authorities to follow the rule of law in discharging their constituted duties.

Late Mr Jerry who resides at 71 Magazyn Street Polokwane Limpopo Province South Africa hails from Eziniffite Nnewi in Anambra State Nigeria. He has been living in South Africa since the past 22yrs.

NICASA executives have also made contacts with the victim’s family and friends in Limpopo. Our High Commission and Consulate has been officially informed and actions are currently been carried out in this regard.

We say no to police br¥tality and k+llings, demanding justice for late Mr Jerry. Our lives matter, nationality is not criminality.

We implore all our citizens to be law abiding and allow the government authorities to utilize all their resources to unravel the circumstances surrounding the d3ath of Mr Jeremiah. We hope that his d3ath will not become a statistic like others before it.

The death of Nigerians in South Africa, particularly under police custody, has become a recurring issue that needs to be stopped. We fear that the recurring d3aths of Nigerians in police custody if unchecked will become a dangerous pattern.”

Court sentences 22-year-old boy to d3@th for k+lling a businesswoman after they worked out in Ogun

An High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State has sentenced 22-year-old Jamiu Malomo to d3@th by h@nging for k+lling one Asisat Akande, an alleged s*x worker, in July 2021.

Malomo, who was 18 at the time of the incident, was convicted on a one count charge of m¥rder.

Delivering his judgment on Wednesday, January 22, Justice O. Ogunfowora said that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubts and that the 22-year-old was guilty as charged.

Justice Ogunfowora held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and therefore sentenced Malomo, to d3@th by h@nging.

During the trial, the State Prosecuting Counsel, Mr. A.M. Adebayo, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, stated that the offence occurred on July 18, 2021, around 9:30 pm in the Ori-Apata community of Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta.

Adebayo explained that the convict had taken Asisat Akande from the 3AD bar in the Panseke area to his residence for s+xual activity.

“After having carnal knowledge of the deceased, she demanded for N10,000 which was their agreement but Malomo refused to give her the the complete money saying he had N8,000.

The situation led to an argument between him and the deceased which made the convict brought out knife from his pocket and st%%bed her on the neck leading to her d3@th,” he said.

He noted that Malomo was arrested by the police at the 3AD club in Panseke where he wanted to pick another girl for s+xual pleasure.
