NATIONAL SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME NOW N100 PER PLATE

-Humanitarian Ministry To build 60 Model School Kitchens

The Federal Government has upwardly reviewed the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme meals from N70 to N100 a plate per child.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq made this known at the Commemoration of the 7th Africa School Feeding Day held in at Transcorp Hilton Abuja on Tuesday.

Umar Farouq thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for the increment, adding that it came at a time when all hands are on deck to ensure that all public primary school pupils 1-3 are enrolled in the programme.

“I will like to seize the opportunity to commend His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, for the recent approval granted by the Federal Government of Nigeria for the upward review of the daily cost of feeding from N70 to N100 per meal per child, which comes along with increased monitoring and tighter regulations.

This is coming at a time when there is an urgent need to ensure that our children are not left behind in the development process, especially in the wake of the devastation caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic to the stability of millions of Households here in Nigeria.

“That is precisely why in 2020, as part of the government’s efforts to cushion the effects of the pandemic, the Ministry provided dry take home rations to targeted households of pupils on the program in Lagos and Ogun States, and the FCT. This is in line with our mission and mandate to ensure that all Nigerians in need are heard, seen and included”.

The Minister also revealed that
series of initiatives were already being deployed to enhance effective programme delivery.

“We are currently working on a policy framework for the program, and will also be rolling out quality assurance structures, along with the introduction of the concept of School Kitchens in 60 model schools across the Nation. These School Kitchens are designed to serve as models, as well as training and skills building centers for cooks and other vendors of the programme”.

The minister also said that arrangements were underway to provide two free meals for Out-Of-School Children from the NHGSFP scheme as it rolls out the Alternate School Programme (ASP) soon.

She thanked the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for providing the required regulatory oversight and monitoring compliance on hygiene, food safety and meal quality standards. The Ministry is also working closely with the World Food Programme (WFP), which is providing technical support, capacity building and policy guidance in the implementation of the NHGSFP.

Earlier, the National Coordinator, National Social Investment Programmes Dr Umar Bindir noted that the School Feeding Programme introduced in 2016 has impacted on school children through a significant increase in school enrolment and attendance and improvement in the nutrition and health status of beneficiary pupils.

The programme currently has a total of 9,881,773 million enrolled children in over 53,000 schools, of which 4.1 million pupils have so far been verified and captured on the NHGSFP Database, in line with the Ministry’s ongoing efforts at establishing a verifiable database of beneficiaries across all of its programmes and interventions

Other speakers at the commemoration of the Africa School Feeding Day include the National Cordinator and Chief Executive Officer at New Partnership for Africa's Development, NEPAD Nigeria Princess Gloria Akobundu, the Representative the Nassarawa state Governor, NEPAD’s Nutrition and Food Systems Project Manager Kefilwe Rhoba Moalisi and other stakeholders.

The theme for this year’s edition of the Africa Day of School Feeding is ‘Nutrition and human capital development in Africa through increased investment in home grown school feeding’.

N-Power: FG recruits 510,000 Graduates, Non-Graduates

Ongoing efforts by Federal Government to reduce unemployment in the country gained a boost with the recruitment of 510 Nigerian youths into the N-Power Programme Batch-C (Stream 1) under the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIPs).

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq who flagged off the exercise for the 36 States of the Federation and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in Abuja; explained that out of over 6 million new applications received, 1 million beneficiaries were mined for the N-Power Batch C.

According to her, “Batch C is divided into 2 streams. Stream C1 of 510,000 beneficiaries and stream C2 for 490,000 beneficiaries. Under Batch C1, a total of 450,000 have been selected to benefit under the Graduate component, while 60,000 beneficiaries will be Non-Graduate beneficiaries.

She explained that the successful beneficiaries who made it through to the final selection stage, are to work in 3 core segments, namely: N-Power Volunteer Corps which is the Graduate programme; N-Power Build, which is a Non-Graduate programme and N-Power Knowledge – which is also a non-graduate programme but deliberately designed on ICT skills.

“It includes the N-Tech Hardware, N-Tech Software and the N-Creative training programmes. Volunteers are strategically attached to carefully selected Places of Primary Assignments (PPAs) where they will provide technical services while also receiving work experience.

“The graduate programme is further sub-divided into N-Teach under which volunteers are trained and attached as assistant teachers in primary schools. The N-Agro volunteers are attached as extension agents to support farmers to obtain better performance, while the N-Health volunteers are trained and attached to work as public health assistants mainly in public Primary Healthcare facilities. The N-Health volunteers are also trained to provide basic diagnostic services in the Primary Health Care Development Centres and will teach preventive healthcare to community members including pregnant women, children, families and individuals especially in rural areas.

“The Non-Graduate programme targets youth in the age bracket of 18-35 with a minimum of secondary school education. The Programme seeks to deliver skills to Job/enterprise through accelerated training and certification. They are trained, tooled and transitioned to take up jobs as Electrical Installation Technicians, plumbing and pipe-fitting installers, masons, carpentry and joinery experts, automobile technicians, Agric technicians and hospitality experts.

N-Power Knowledge (Hardware, Software and Creative) is also a non-graduate programme and has 3-months and 6 months components for training beneficiaries on foundational, vocational, life and entrepreneurial skills, and also apprenticeship. It has 3 tracks: Hardware training; Software Training and Creative (Animation and Script Writing). The first 3-month training component is delivered at 6 selected locations, one in each geo-political zone, to be followed by a six-month internship in the respective States of residence of the trainees.

“The N-Power Volunteer (Graduates) are entitled to a monthly stipend of N30,000 for a period of one year. The Non-graduate beneficiaries are entitled to N10,000 monthly stipends for a period of 9 months. All beneficiaries are granted an appropriate starter pack for their trade to enable them to start their businesses in their chosen trades.

“The N-Power programme deployed an online application and selection strategy to ensures fairness, transparency and credibility in the recruitment process. The programme commenced in the Office of the Vice President back in June 2016 when the application portal was first opened. Over 750,000 applications were received, out of which, 200,000 beneficiaries were screened and selected into the first batch called Batch A. The portal was opened again in June 2017 where over 2.5 million applications were received, from which another 300,000 volunteers were selected into the programme as Batch B.”

She applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his administration’s unwavering efforts in eradicating poverty in Nigeria and for supporting and sustaining the National Social Investment Programme.

The Minister also applauded the National Assembly members for appropriating funds to execute these programmes and also their oversight in ensuring the programmes are implemented as approved.

Other stakeholders who spoke during the launch, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kalloon pledged support for job creation for Nigerian youths and vulnerable groups.

Mr Kalloon who described the official launch of the On-boarding of the N-Power Batch C Stream 1, as another milestone manifestation of the policy of the Government to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by 2030, commended the Ministry for mobilizing targeted transfer and livelihood support to the extremely poor and vulnerable households across Nigeria including its effort to facilitate the N-Power programme for Nigerian youth.

“This generation of young people is the largest cohort in history with an unprecedented 1.8 billion young people worldwide. As a group they also face an unprecedented set of upcoming challenges with megatrends like climate change, biodiversity loss, growing inequalities, and the fourth industrial revolution, bearing down on their futures.

“On top of these imminent issues came the global pandemic at the beginning of 2020. No generation has suffered more from lost opportunities and disruptions over the past year than young people. COVID-19 has placed yet another major hurdle in front of today’s youth as they endeavour to fulfil their potential. Even before the pandemic, more than one in five young people globally were not in employment, education or training. Many in this generation are at risk of being left behind. This is a crisis within a crisis.

“Given that Nigeria has one of the largest populations of young people in the world, these concerns are all the more pressing in this nation. With 65.6 million citizens between the ages of 10 and 24, young people are one-third of Nigeria’s population but 100% of its future. However, this youth dividend is not guaranteed. Its potential must be cultivated and encouraged and developed. Never has this support been more necessary because COVID-19 has interrupted the education and employment of so many Nigerian youths,” he said.

KEEP YOUR CHEQUES, PRESIDENT BUHARI TELLS CONTRACTORS, BUSINESSMEN, BUT ALWAYS REMEMBER THE NEEDY

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Daura, Katsina State, urged businessmen, contractors and other privileged Nigerians who are beneficiaries of government patronage to always engage in Corporate Social Responsibility, instead of seeking to favor individuals with gifts.

President Buhari, who visited the Emir of Daura, Dr Umar Faruk Umar, at his Palace, said pointedly, "I don't want tour cheque. Go and assist our communities" instead of trying to return kickbacks to public officers, including his office.

"We don't want cheques from anyone or organisation as returns or influence of any kind. Let them remember their Corporate Social Responsibilities," he said.

The President noted that he would love to visit Daura more frequently, but for the high cost of presidential movements and exposing security personnel to the weather, assuring that his heart remains with the people.

"We are known for farming and I have my farm here. I could come every two weeks and no one can stop me. But the cost to the movement is high. I would rather that it be used to better our schools, clinics and hospitals," said the President.

The President said the grace of God had kept Nigeria together as a country in spite of differences that led to a 30 months civil war
"We want to thank God always for keeping us together as a country. From January 15, 1966, the country was thrown into political crisis. We had a 30 months civil war that resulted in the loss of about a million lives.

"We still thank God for keeping us together. We remain grateful to all those who showed interest in our unity and progress. May God continue to bless them," he added.

The President, who recalled fond memories of visiting the Palace as a military Head of State, expressed happiness that the warmth and hospitality of the traditional institution had been sustained over the years.

In his remarks, the Emir of Daura, thanked the President for always creating time to visit his hometown and the palace despite the tight schedule.

"Your visit to Daura reflects your good character which we are very proud of. I can assure you that men, women, children, marketers and artisans are always pleased to receive you and they will be praying for you.

"Today is not for speeches but for appreciation. We have been blessed so much as a community because you are the leader of the country. You have brought honour to our domain.

''As a community, we have benefited a lot with increased traffic of people and organisations coming to help us here. We know it’s because of you.

"May the good Lord always go before you and behind you, and remove all obstacles from your path," he added.

The Emir said the President must remain focused in getting results particularly in securing the country.
"Nigeria is lucky to have you at this time. I am not saying it to please you, but if you had not been in power it would have been very difficult. I doubt if we will be here today," he added.

At the meeting, the Emir publicly announced conferment of the title of Talban Daura on Yusuf Buhari, son of President Buhari.

He said a date would be announced for the turbaning ceremony of the President's son, which might likely be before his marriage.

The Emir also announced creation of a District in the community of the President, with headquarters in Dimurkol.

He said the turbaning of young Buhari and creation of the District was to further extend and deepen the long relationship between the Palace and the family.

He said the decision was in agreement with the kingmakers in Daura Emirate Council.

During the visit, the Palace used the opportunity to clarify the difference between two titles, Talban Hausa, given to Alpha Conde, the President of Guinea and Talban Daura designated for Yusuf, the President’s son.

The Palace explained that Daura, as the linchpin of the Hausa society had conferred titles that have bearing on the Hausa Kingdom and those that are specific to the Emirate.

The Nigerian Air Force has just taken delivery of some Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano aircrafts ordered by the Air Force from the United States (US).

Nigeria is expecting Twelve.

The Embraer EMB 314 Super Tucano also named ALX or A-29, is a Brazilian turbine engine light attack aircraft designed and built by Embraer as a development of the Embraer EMB 312 Tucano.

But the ones ordered by the Nigerian Air Force are American Specs from the Embraer production line in the United States.

The A-29 Super Tucano carries a wide variety of weapons, including precision-guided munitions, and was designed to be a low-cost system operated in low-threat environments.

The precision-guided munition it carries is what I find really impressive about this aircraft.

It is a guided munition intended to precisely hit a specific target, to minimize collateral damage and increase lethality against intended targets.

So we are not going to hear ugly tales of Nigeria Air Force jets bombarding Nigerian troops or wedding guests.

This is straight to target.

The War against insurgency and banditry in the North is about to take another dimension.

Expect a rain of fire on the enemies of Nigeria.

Nigeria must succeed.
