I Was Impeached Because I Wanted To Be Governor - Former Edo Deputy-Gov, Shaibu

I Was Impeached Because I Wanted To Be Governor - Former Edo Deputy-Gov, Philip Shaibu, has described his impeachment by the state House of Assembly as illegal.

Earlier, the state House of Assembly impeached the embattled state deputy governor following the adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the state Chief Judge to probe allegations of misconduct against him.

He was probed on allegations of perjury and leaking of government secrets by a panel headed by Justice S.A. Omonua (retd.) which ended its sitting on Friday after Shaibu failed to appear.

Shaibu said the impeachment was due to his ambition to become the state governor.

He, however, noted that the impeachment did not follow due process.

He made his position known in a video shared on his X handle on Monday.

He said, “My good people of Edo State, I thank you all for standing by me in these troubling circumstances as the deputy governor of Edo State.

“It is with a heavy heart, yet a resolute spirit, that I come before you to address the recent events that are unfolding in our dear state. I denounce in the strongest term the illegal impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly over baseless charges.”

He added that his impeachment was an attack on democracy and a show of dictatorship.

“This is not just an attack on me as an individual but on the democracy that we hold dear.

“It is a dangerous descend into dictatorship and a threat to the foundation of our democracy. Let it be clear that this impeachment was hatched because of my ambition to contest the Edo State 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. An ambition that is a legal right to all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“It is a sad reality that in our political landscape, ambition is met with resistance. Those in power seek to silence opposition through illegitimate means. I have devoted my life to serving the good people of Edo state with integrity and honesty. I have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of our citizens. I have upheld the values of democracy and justice and yet in return, I am faced with baseless accusations and a blatant disregard for due process and the rule of law,” he said.

Speaking further, Shaibu described the allegations levelled against him as a move to conceal the real motive behind his impeachment.

He said, “The allegations brought against me are nothing more than a smokescreen to conceal the true motive behind this impeachment. It’s a flagrant abuse of power and a betrayal of the trust the people of Edo have placed in their elected officials.

“We refuse to stay inactive while our democratic institutions manipulate and exploit for personal gain. We will fight this injustice with every atom of strength in our veins for the sake of the people of Edo State and the future of democracy. I call upon all well-meaning citizens of Edo and indeed all Nigerians who believe in the principle of democracy and justice to stand with us in this moment of crisis.

“We cannot allow tyranny operation to take root in our society, we must resist the forces that seek to undermine our freedom and trample upon our rights.”

He, however, appealed to the judiciary to ensure justice prevails, saying, “To the members of the Edo State House of Assembly who have chosen to forsake their oath of office and partake in this charade, I say this, history will judge harshly for your betrayal of the people who elected you to represent their interests. But know this, you do not have the power to silence the voice of justice and truth.

“I call upon the judiciary and all relevant authorities to intervene and uphold the principles of justice and fairness. Let the truth prevail over lies. Let the rule of law triumph over lawlessness. I am confident that the legal system will vindicate me and expose the sham that has been orchestrated against me.”

He added that his impeachment would not deter him from fighting for the rights and freedom of Nigerians.

“I want to reaffirm my commitment to the people of Edo State to the values that bind us together as a collective. I will not be deterred or intimidated by those who seek to subvert our democracy. I will continue to fight for the rights and freedoms of Edolites by extension Nigerians that suffer oppression. I will stand firm in my resolve to seek justice.

“As we stand united in the face of tyranny and oppression, I urge all to remain calm and go about our lawful duties as good citizens and true democrats. Together, we will overcome this chapter in our history and emerge stronger and more resolute in our pursuit of freedom and justice in our society,” he added.

Trans-Border Traders Reject Nigeria Currency For Business Transactions
As a result of the depreciation of the Nigerian currency (Naira) over the past few months, additional challenges have arisen for the local currency in the West African market region.

Vanguard findings across the Seme border show that the traders on both sides are now preferring either the CFA or the domestic currency of the non-francophone countries.

Hitherto, Naira ruled the sub-region as the dominant currency accepted as a medium of exchange by traders across the borders due to the high volume of trade between those countries and Nigeria.

The Nigerian currency traded in the status of convertibility in the unofficial payment systems of the countries.

However, Vanguard’s findings indicated that the Naira began sliding from that status in February, hitting the point of outright rejection in March 2024.

Some of the traders interviewed by Vanguard included Nigerians. They lamented that holding Naira has become a huge risk as the value keeps depreciating since last year with the worst rate of depreciation recorded last month.

Official reports indicate that Naira which traded above N1/1.5CFA in the first quarter of 2023 dropped sharply to N1/0.9CFA in the second quarter and N1/0.8CFA in the third quarter 2023.

After a moderate stability through the fourth quarter 2023, it opened 2024 at N1/ 0.66067CFA in January 2024.
However, following a second wave of depreciation in February, the sub-regional fortune went down drastically to N1/0.38308CFA before hitting a new low of N1/0.37595CFA last week.

The traders are already hedging against further depreciation although there’s a slight improvement in the last few days.

However, the Naira is still not close to what it used to be in the subregion some years ago. The development is adversely affecting the cost of goods imported into Nigeria through the West African economies. Consequently, the traders are recording a lull in business activities on both sides of the border towns in Nigeria and the Benin Republic.

Some border markets in Benin-Nigeria visited showed that most of the money changers or Bureau De Change, do not display the Nigerian currency like they did last year.

Even transporters and bike riders otherwise known as Okada in Nigeria, across the borders declined payment in Naira, saying that by the time they return to convert Naira to CFA, they would have lost some fraction of their earnings. Consequently, they said CFA was safer to hold.

A bike rider, Ibrahim Yakubu, who took our correspondent from the Seme border into the ‘Misebo’ market (about 45 kilometres from the border) refused to accept Naira and insisted on collecting his payment in CFA.

Yakubu also said that before now, the Naira was strong adding that it was easily accepted as a means of payment for goods and services.

PLATEAU GOVERNOR BREAKS FAST WITH MUSLIM UMMAH, CALLS FOR COLLABORATION FOR PEACE, UNITY, AND GOOD GOVERNANCE

In a heartening display of unity, the Muslim Ummah in Plateau State joined Executive Governor Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang at the New Government House in Little Rayfield Jos to break their fast during Ramadan.

Governor Mutfwang, in his address, emphasized the significance of the gathering in fostering mutual understanding, strengthening bonds of brotherhood, and collectively working towards a peaceful, united, and prosperous Plateau.

He underscored the importance of transcending differences in faith, ethnicity, or status to combat the common challenges facing the state, emphasizing that decades of violence have benefitted no one. He called for a return to the spirit of love and brotherhood practiced in the past.

Governor Mutfwang expressed gratitude to the Emir of Keffi, His Royal Highness Alh. Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa, the Emir of Borgu, Alh. Muhammed Sani Haliru, and other Islamic leaders for their presence at the event, noting that their participation will help to foster cohesion and enduring friendships across divides.

He remarked, "I am delighted that we have gathered tonight in this welcoming atmosphere to share a meal without fear or suspicion. Plateau belongs to all of us, and it is our choice whether to unite as wise individuals or perish as fools."

Governor Mutfwang highlighted the ample reasons for the citizens of Plateau State to coexist harmoniously and strive towards a state where all citizens can conduct their affairs without fear. He urged the Muslim Ummah to view their gathering as the beginning of positive developments for the state and a solid foundation for Nigeria's unity and peace.

"We are committed to making Plateau a role model for Nigeria, exemplifying inclusiveness, justice, and fairness. As your Governor, I continually pray for the wisdom to lead Plateau aright."

The Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa, and the Emir of Borgu, Alh. Muhammed Sani Haliru, commended Governor Mutfwang's commitment to justice, fairness, and inclusive governance in Plateau State.

They prayed for Governor Mutfwang to be endowed with more wisdom, knowledge, and strength to further elevate Plateau, citing evidence of a promising start and urging citizens' support for the administration.

Chairman of Jama'tul Nasri Islam, JNI, Plateau State and Emir of Wase, Alh. Muhammadu Sambo Haruna, expressed gratitude to Governor Mutfwang for supporting the Muslim community in Plateau. He noted that 70 percent of road rehabilitation and repairs in the Jos metropolis were within the Muslim community.

He dispelled rumors about the Governor's stance towards Muslims, citing Governor Mutfwang's tangible efforts to develop the Muslim community in less than a year, surpassing the achievements of previous administrations.

He urged the Muslim Ummah to support Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang's administration for the peace, unity, and progress of Plateau and the greater good of the Ummah.

The convener of the All Progressive Congress (APC), South-East Coalition, Francis Okoye, has reacted to the visit of the former Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai, to the national secretariat of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Recall that El-Rufai made headlines last month over alleged defection moves from the APC and purported plans to contest the 2027 presidential election on the SDP platform.

In an interview with Legit, Okoye noted that the former Governor is at liberty to leave the ruling party, and it does not call for any worry or alarm.

Okoye said nobody knows if El Rufai wants to leave the APC, but if he does, it would further divide the opposition party and strengthen the ruling party.

The APC chieftain further painted a scenario where El-Rufai is the SDP presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso flies the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) flag, Peter Obi maintains his Labour Presidential ticket and the same with former president Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to him, such a scenario would make President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC winners in the 2027 election flawlessly.

He said, “For now nobody will say that El Rufai wants to leave APC or not but if he really wants to leave he is at liberty to do so.
