APC group, Aiyedatiwa camp disagree over alleged fake membership register

Barely one week to the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, a group within the party has accused the state governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, of producing fake party membership registers and cards in a bid to win the primary.

The group, Ondo Vanguards for Good Governance, in a statement on Saturday by its coordinator, Tade Ojo, alleged that the governor was involved in manipulating the election process due to his alleged desperation to win the April 20 primary.

The group called on the state and national leadership of the ruling APC to caution Aiyedatiwa to prevent him from disrupting the party’s primary process.

Ojo said, “Recall that reports of the annihilating steps being taken by Aiyedatiwa’s supporters to recruit thugs to unleash uncommon violence in areas where Aiyedatiwa is believed will lose the coming primary have been made public.

“It is important to stress that the leadership of appropriate security agencies has been alerted to this devious act of the governor who has feigned and simulated popularity by procuring fickle endorsements.

“The second in line of the escapades of the governor and his desperate partners, particularly some senior appointees of the state government, is the generation of fake membership registers and printing of fake membership slips to people who are not members of the APC.

“Whereas it is foolhardy to believe that the new fake documents being produced by these anarchists could be impressed successfully on the national committee saddled with the responsibility of conducting the primary election, it is needful that we expose these disruptive acts so that the intentions of Aiyedatiwa’s evil geniuses to either confuse the APC members or cast a doubt on the conduct of the primary election are nipped in the bud.”

However, while reacting to the allegations, the spokesperson for the Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation, Mr Kayode Fasua, denied the allegation, saying the group was making wrong allegation as it was being intimidated by the popularity of the governor ahead of the primary.

He described the OVGG as a faceless group that would not be allowed to hoodwink the people of the state with lies and wrong allegations.

Fasua stated, “The primary election is an internal affair of the APC, and the party leadership is independent of government. Before the party, all aspirants, including the governor, are equal in treatment regarding campaigns and the internal electoral process.

“Therefore, Governor Aiyedatiwa or his supporters are far removed from this lie of printing fake membership cards, as alleged by jittery aspirants hiding behind fingers.

“Again, the allegation of the governor unleashing terror or destroying billboards is trite and unappealing to the public because the police have never for once heard of such a complaint, much less arrest anyone. They should go drink some water and sleep for their enviously frayed nerves. Hardworking Governor Aiyedatiwa has overtaken them.”

It was reports that the APC screening for all the aspirants on Friday in Abuja, ahead of the primary of the party coming up on April 20, 2024.

The aspirants that faced the screening were, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Mr Wale Akinterinwa, Mr Mayowa Akinfolarin, Prof Francis Faduyile, Mr Isaacs Kekemeke, Chief Olusola Oke, SAN, Mr Gbenga Edema, and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim

Others are Mr Jimi Odimayo, Brig. Gen. Olamide Ohunyeye (retd.), Mr Diran Iyantan, Ife Oyedele, Mr Soji Ehinlawo, Mrs Funmilayo Waheed-Adekojo , Mr Morayo Lebi, and Mrs Funke Omogoroye.

Kano Gov unhappy over release of political thugs from custody

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has expressed his displeasure over the release of some political thugs who were detained for various criminal activities in the state.

The Governor described it as an act of sabotage against the state and vowed to deploy necessary mechanisms to recapture those fueling political thuggery in Kano.

Making this known while receiving the Emir of Kano, Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero, who was at the Government House on the occasion of ‘Hauwa Nassarawa’, a traditional Sallah homage to the Governor, he disclosed how a number of “political thugs” who were arrested and charged with prosecution suddenly escaped judicial prosecution.

Although the Governor was not categorical, he accused the opposition political party of securing the release of the accused from custody.

“When we came to power, we met high security threats. Acts of political thuggery were the order of the day. Snatching of phones and personal property in the metropolis. Thugs stabbed innocent people simply to steal their phones. However, God in His infinite mercy gave us the grace and we ended it in less than 10 months. Now, thuggery across the eight metropolitan areas has been degraded by 90 per cent.

“Unfortunately, during the just-concluded Ramadan, we had an incidence of some miscreants who went to invade a mosque in Dorayi, injured worshippers, and snatched their phones,” he said.

He further disclosed that the security also arrested some political thugs recently for criminal offenses and charged them to court for prosecution. “Suddenly, the opposition party went ahead to secure their release. But I can assure you that we would not condone any act of security threat in Kano,” Yusuf vowed.

On the recent establishment of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, Governor Yusuf declared that the intent was to unravel injustice and recover illegally sold public property. Contrary to insinuation, however, Governor Yusuf insisted the inquiry was not meant to witch-hunt any personality or opposition party.

He further disclosed plans of his administration to propel socio-economic and infrastructural development, adding that the N24 billion flyovers commissioned at Dan’agundi and Talihudu areas will commence in the next few weeks.

Earlier, in his homage message, Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, condemned political thuggery and criminal activities witnessed recently, charging security apparatus to redouble efforts to nip the ugly trend in the bud.

The monarch, however, commended government efforts to ameliorate the suffering of the masses arising from the high cost of living emanating from the removal of fuel subsidy.

Alh. Bayero essentially commended Governor Yusuf on the distribution of palliatives, empowerment, and development in education, health, and road construction.

Veteran journalist and development data expert, Rotimi Sankore, is dead.

This was made known by the Chief Executive Officer of RadioNow 95.3FM, Kadaria Ahmed, in a post on her page on Saturday.

In her post, Ahmed described Sankore as one of Nigeria’s finest journalists and an exemplary individual who passionately addressed the nation’s challenges

She wrote, “It is with deep sorrow that I announce we have lost one of Nigeria’s finest journalists and excellent all-round human beings, Rotimi Sankore. Rotimi loved Nigeria with a passion that allowed him to be honest about her problems and what needed to be done to solve them.

“He was an expert data journalist, the best at what he does. He could analyse data like no one else I knew using it to understand events but also project trajectories, especially avoidable ones.

“Over the years, Rotimi spent time and energy trying to make sure those in government, policymakers and ordinary Nigerians understand what the numbers show, how they came about, what they mean and how they can help us understand what needs to be done.

“His work was insightful and significant, and it is his legacy. His death is a big loss. We will miss him. My heartfelt condolences to his daughter and his family.”

Sankore’s contributions extended beyond journalism. He was also known as a development and policy expert, journalism trainer, and human rights advocate.

As the ED/Editor-in-Chief of the Africa Centre for Development Journalism, he provided communication support to organisations striving for social, political, and economic change in Africa.

Additionally, Sankore served as the Editorial Board Chair of the Nigeria Info Radio Group, a part of the AIM Media Group, overseeing stations across Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Onitsha.
