Can he bring the excitement in the heavyweight division?

My thoughts on the Rilwan Oyekola homecoming card.

It's a lazy card to be honest.

Rilwan is from Ibadan, Homecoming 1 should be held there then maybe Homecoming 2 in Lagos and so on.

Who is Emmanuel Quartey? When Oyekola has even fought for the Japanese featherweight title and number 1 rank.

The promoters could have arranged a Filipino fighter or even a Japanese boxer so Rilwan could show his people how he had handled them in our absence.

The bum from the Gold Coast couldn't go past 3 minutes. Mess!

And why is the fight holding on a Friday night? πŸ˜‚

These are the issues.

Understandable point of view.

It's a mixed feeling kind of thing, Olympics boxing needs high level boxing aptitude which is honestly scarce in our local boxing.

Hopefully we get the medals and spotlight on us from Paris.

Let's go champs!!! πŸ₯Š

*THE CONSEQUENCES OF NIGERIA BOXING QUALIFICATIONS FOR PARIS OLYMPICS 2024*
PAGE 2. _(continuation)_

By: Laguda Babatunde.

I am also worried that our DNA is beginning to resemble that of football, Basketball and Table tennis in Nigeria. These sister-sports rely solely on foreign based athletes to the Olympics. (Discussion for another day).

This development is new to Nigeria boxing. It is a phenomenon that should invite our curiousity if not our worries. Knowing fully well that Nigeria Boxing has never presented a foreign based or professional boxer in any Olympic Games, even with a modest credit of 6 Olympic medals, it should make us wonder where we are and where we may be heading. And, more importantly, ask if we're prepared for this journey.

I acknowledge and iterate that sports is dynamic, and so is Boxing. What we need now is to prepare ourselves, coaches, officials and administrators for current and emerging trends from where we are now. That way, we will become more aware of where we are going, what to expect, our new responsibilities and be adequately prepared for the journey. The dynamics are changing and so are the consequences for us...

1. We must remember that winning an Olympic gold medal remains the ultimate goal. It is a serious business, needing that all hands be on deck.
We should strategize from the inside and plan to be in control of our sport and remain relevant in the journey.

2. Our coaches should get upgraded in their skills, knowing fully well that boxers are now competing at a more professional level now. How, for example, does that affect our boxers' training regimen?

3. The Boxing Federation should immediately annex the Boxing Patriots like Boxing Hall of Fame by Hon. Wale Edun and Yucateco Boxing promotion by Hon. Omole Imadu for regular competitions and participation in international competitions

4. The needs for courses and workshops to update all the stakeholders cannot be overstated. The terrain is changing, we need to adapt or drop out.

5. What will make our spectacular performances at the Senegal Olympic qualifier sustainable is to start early preparation for the Olympics. That will lead us to achieving our long time dream of winning the Olympics Gold medal.

6. We should start to seriously approach corporate bodies and brands for investment, not just sponsorships, and partnership, not just funding, because government budget alone cannot raise Olympic gold medalists.

7. Also, we should keep in mind that anyone can get to the top by chance, champions become great by staying consistently on top. This doesn't happen by chance. There is work, serious and smart work.

Again, I congratulate one and all for the victories of Senegal. Now, let us go to Paris and conquer. Shall we?

Thank you
Laguda Babatunde

The chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control expressed dismay over the inability of boxers to maintain healthy weights and blood pressure.

He stated this during the weigh in session for the Super Fight 2.0 at the Adamasingba Stadium.

Most of the boxers didn't pass their medicals at the first go, with many missing weight and returning high blood pressure results.

In another remark, ex-boxer Olusegun Ajose also spoke about the dangers of unchecked blood pressure as boxers are supposed to enjoy the health benefits of the sport.

The Oyo State chapter will now embark on a sensitization tour to the professional gyms within the state to enlighten them about the ways and means to keep their health in order.

AMATEUR BOXING LEAGUES AND SMALL HALL SHOWS: ESSENTIAL FOR BOXING ECOSYSTEMS.

On an episode of Which Way 9ja Boxing podcast, Kayode Oluwa stated that there are more fans of boxing than local football in Nigeria. This may not be untrue because the country has produced national, continental and world champions.

The growth of a boxer can be divided into 3;
β€’ Discovery
β€’ Development
β€’ Exhibition

The country also boasts of world class coaches and trainers; a collective of people who have developed talents despite dire lack, unimaginable challenges and obstacles.

Recent successes especially 2 women boxers fighting out of Lagos going to win continental and world titles on foreign soil and the brilliant performances at the Olympics qualifiers attest to the quality of training available.

Nigeria, a place where talent discovery and development is a continuous process.

However, the lack of exhibition stunts the development of boxers, managers, promoters, fans and all boxing stakeholders. Proper exhibition improves the marketability and revenue of the sport.

A professional boxer cannot leave a mark or make decent livelihood from the sport without a fanbase that is emotionally connected to either his personality or his fight game, it's only logical to know that fans cannot connect to inactive boxers.

The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control should be pressurized start a category of licenses that will allow the sanctioning of professional fights for shows with 100 seats or less and of course with reduced sanction fees.

The Nigerian Boxing Federation should also start looking into the commissioning of semi professional leagues to ease top amateurs into the professional ranks while they build their reputation in the sport.

With the boxing scene witnessing a steady supply of groomed talents from the amateur boxing leagues slowly integrated into the professional level through small hall shows there is a good chance for exponential growth in the boxing ecosystem.

Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor sports hall at the Teslim Balogun Stadium was agog on Sunday, 24th September as it hosted the 29th edition of the GOTv Boxing Night.

The 29th edition featured 6 professional bouts with a national women's title contest in the Cruiserweight division. The main event was a national Bantamweight contest.

The night started on a sombre note, a free standing banner honors the memory of the late National Bantamweight champion Habeeb Oladeji aka Ige who died earlier in the month. Oladeji was supposed to be in a rematch against Tunde Olojede on this day.

In the first fight of the night Arabambi Ojo steps in to replace the late champ in a fight that should have been Tunde Olojede's chance to reclaim his title, it was supposed to be his redemption. He coasted to a unanimous decision after 8 rounds.

The second fight was fiercely contested but Taiwo Olowu, a former continental title contender proved too much for Ganiyu Kolawole. The two fighters have met in the ring once before and Taiwo Olowu confirms his first majority decision victory was not a fluke and he won quite comfortably, showing ring generalship and good movement. Taiwo Olowu ended the fight on a high, floating and stinging in the final round.

Lucky Oyibu stepped in to replace Emmanuel Abimbola in a super lightweight contest against Azeez Abayomi 'Latest'. Latest, a more experienced and seasoned boxer manhandled Oyibu, stunning him a few times before the eventual stoppage in round 1 of 8.

History was made as the first ever National Womens' Cruiserweight title was on the line. Celine Agwu against Bolatito Oluwole, Agwu also known as Baby Assassin proved that she's not one to be pushed around, gave a good fight. Bolatito suffered a dislocated shoulder in the 5th rounds but rallied on to claim victory via unanimous decision at the end of 8. History made in a spectacular fashion.

Sifon Iwatt handed Olalekan 'Omo West' his first professional loss in a controversial fight. Omo West came to fight and was a good counterpuncher, catching Iwatt who kept lungeing forward to punch. The fight went the distance with Iwatt snatching a split decision win SD over Olalekan. A thrilling contest whetting the appetite of fight fans for the main event.

The main event was a 8 round contest in the bantamweight division. Opeyemi Ibrahim 'Golden Boy' was up against Adeleke 'Happy Boy'. The hunger and desire was palpable in both fighters, going toe to toe, Golden Boy daring as ever. Though, Ibrahim's offense was tactically neutralized by Adeleke, it didn't deter him from giving his best. However at the end of 8 rounds, Happy Boy Adeleke nips a unanimous decision victory over Golden Boy.

REMARKS

Bolatito Oluwole wins best boxer of the night and goes home with the Mojisola Ogunsanya trophy and a cash prize of 1,000,000 naira.

A case of subpar matchmaking pitching Lucky Oyibu, a late replacement with only 2 fights against the well experienced Ayobami Latest. The referee stops the fight before more punishment is inflicted on Lucky Oyibu.

Celina Agwu, a new professional with only 2 fights should not have been given a shot at the title, she could have won if she had the experience. Oluwole suffered a shoulder dislocation and Agwu didn't take advantage, controversially Oluwole was neither given the standing count and was allowed to recover before the fight resumed.
