Bayelsa state governor, Seriake Dickson, has decried the alleged misuse of federal power by leadersl of opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), especially in the Nigeria Delta region during the recent presidential election. According to him, the business of politics is to serve and better the lot of the people, and not to maim, kill or destroy them. Politicians, civil rights activists and other stakeholders on Monday marked the 11th anniversary of the annulment of the April 14, 2007 Governorship election in Bayelsa State. They challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the November 2nd date fixed for the Governorship election in the state is acceptable, credible and without rancour. The Ijaw Youths Council' (IYC) in Bayelsa Central zone is currently locked in a leadership crisis over who succeeds the association's chairman, Tare Porri, who has now been elected into the State House of Assembly representing Ekeremor Constituency 2. The battle, which had stirred tension among the youths, was due to the non-availability of a succession plan. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on Friday warned against panic buying of fuel, refuting reports of alleged plans by the Federal Government. It also allayed fears of fuel scarcity over rumoured plans by oil marketers to stop lifting the product. Police authorities on Tuesday pledged to ensure safe return of the Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Rasaki Musibau, and others who were abducted at the weekend.. Musibau and six others were abducted by unknown gunmen on Saturday night at about 8pm on Iwoye Bridge, along Itoikin-Epe Road. The Federal High Court in Lagos has given the go-ahead to a bid by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) to compel the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN to disclose the names of contractors who allegedly absconded with public funds in the sector. SERAP had in January issued a Freedom of Information request and sued Mr Fashola following allegations by former Nigeria’s Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar that “contractors who were paid hundred percent upfront for power projects disappeared with public funds without carrying out any work.” [ 564 more words ]

All fees relating to the examination have been fully paid by the government. But, going by the findings of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), the Nigerian Police Force is, paradoxically, the undisputable recipient of the country's unenviable most corrupt institution award. This shameful award, according to SERAP, is the finding of a five-year survey it carried out. The La State Government has urged occupants of marked distressed buildings to immediately vacate them. The demolition team of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) is billed to move to such marked buildings shortly. Already, relief and resettlement centres have been opened to accommodate those affected.
