Politicians, civil rights activists and other stakeholders on Monday marked the 11th anniversary of the annulment of the April 14, 2007 Governorship election in Bayelsa State. They challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the November 2nd date fixed for the Governorship election in the state is acceptable, credible and without rancour. The stakeholders, made up the former Governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigerian (ACN), Prince Ebitimi Amgbare, the former Secretary of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) and State Coordinator of ERA, Comrade Morris Alagoa, and the Former Senior Special Assistant to the State Government, Comrade Tony Ile, urged INEC to allow the will of the people to prevail during the coming Governorship poll. The Ijaw Youths Council' (IYC) in Bayelsa Central zone is currently locked in a leadership crisis over who succeeds the association's chairman, Tare Porri, who has now been elected into the State House of Assembly representing Ekeremor Constituency 2. The battle, which had stirred tension among the youths, was due to the non-availability of a succession plan. The Elders' Advisory Council under the Chairmanship of Mike Wenobowei, had set up a 10-man committee headed by Elder Warri Welman, to shop for a credible replacement for Porri from his zone of Sagbama/Ekeremor axis to complete the remaining months of his tenure. The exodus of talent from developing economies, known as the ‘brain-drain’ syndrome, remains a critical issue of concern. It affects not only the human resource development index of these economies but also cascades into numerous additional multiplier effects that militate against socio-economic growth and development. It appears the trend of highly-skilled Nigerian professionals from diverse fields, notably in sectors like health, technology and education, leaving the shores of the country for Europe, America and Canada in search of greener pasture is accentuating almost on a daily basis.
